I never did try the muffler route. At anyrate the IWG on the EFR works well, does not creep, and holds enough boost for me to get 95% out of the turbo. Just took a number of trials on the TD tables to get it right.

I do go to tracks for HPDE, and lapping days, along with time attack, so not sure if they require the exhaust exit behind the driver.
At any rate, the IWG works well, just needed some TLC in the tuning department. Biggest problem I have right now as trying to get some nice logs together showing power in 1st through 3rd (individually) to compare with a stage2+ dual AVCS STI. 1st gear always spins all 4! Every single time. (go WOT from a roll, no clutch work here) DCCD in lock and traction control off of course. I have looked for nice clean grippy pavement, but no luck yet. Maybe I need to really heat them up first? Sometimes I break loose in 2nd too. Winter tires were worse. 245/45 X-ice3 would spin all 4 in third (again no clutch action). Another issue: Not really an issue, but something I don't care for soo much. The turbo is loud! I had the exact same intake on my LGT, but I had it in front of a Garrett cartridge, and it had a nice spooling wine to it, grew to love that sound. The EFR just sounds loud, not so nice. Of course on stock intake I couldn't hear it, but now I sure can. Even just making 20-40 hp cruising at 50 mph. (no leaks, I tested) Anyone else notice this? |

Oh yeah, the EFRs are screamers, at least the smaller ones.

I have a custom 3" CAI with the filter in the fender. I don't think its that loud. Some who've ridden in my car didn't even realize it was turbo'd but they also don't know squat about cars.

Mabey the B1 framed EFRs with the small 2.5" inlet compressor housings are much louder?

Overall though my car is pretty loud and the intake is pretty long. That probably drowns out a lot of the turbo noise. You guys running shorty intakes?

Efr db's
Damn..I couldn't agree more...since I built up this rotated 7163 turbo conversion there is lots o noise from the engine bay!...I keep thinking I am having some mechanical issues...
I've been tuning/logging recently and have actually popped the hood a number of times cause of unusual noises from the turbo...lots of "mechanical" type noises that I never noticed with my old gt30....however I have also changed a lot of intake piping, revise fmic piping, wrx plastic intake that transmits more mechanical noise. ...dunno where all the noise is generated...however I just read that if you are hearing extra noise under light throttle cruise.. That you may need a heavier bpv spring as it can end up fluttering which may be some of the noise.... ... May also try wrapping the down pipe ( there is a stainless flex joint) to see if it dampens some more noise, maybe a custom turbo blanket as well... Quote:

To chine in on the subject of noise from an EFR turbo:
I am straggling with resolving the same noise problem on my EFR6258 daily driver setup. At the onset of throttle application, as soon as I hear the high pitch mechanical sound of the turbo spooling up @~1/5th of throttle, almost immediately that nice sound is masked by loud whooshing sound of air, which does not abate until ~3/4 throttle, thereafter the whooshing sound disappears, completely. My first initial guess was that my EFR built-in recirculating valve (RV) is leaking air...? This, if this is indeed the problem (?), which I am now not all that sure about, may be solvable with a stiffer preload spring from Full Race, Next step would be to replace the RV with a Diverter Valve (a BOV that sends excess air back into my Process West TMIC.) I am now looking at either a Forge of Synapsis Eng DV - any experience/suggestions? Next, since we are dealing with air noise, I am looking to wrap up the houses & pipes from the turbo to the TMIC - looking into sound deadening material such as foil coated asphalt sheets, etc., any recommendations? My setup gets almost 400/400 on E85, done by YimiSports, see: http://yimisport.com/2013/10/25/a-wo...eeps-clothing/ FYI, just recently rebuilt & upgraded my 5EAT Auto transmission (David @ HexMods did all the work.) Once we are done optimizing the tranny to handle all the upgraded power & torque, next I am contemplating upgrading up to a SS 7163 (unless somebody is interested in buying my SS6258 setup so i can add money and go with a TS 7163 Must say, even now, the car is darn fast, significantly above VF52 - last car I took on was a SRT-8 with a Twin Turbo upgrade, V8 Cameros & Mustangs have little chance. Cheers! |

First thing I did was ordered the optional stiff spring after i felt how soft the normal spring was. Id rather have the slight possibility of surge vs leaking boost pressure anyday.
I figured this could possibly be some of peoples problems as well, could be causing slower spool and not holding boost as well if your leaking pressure at that spot. |

Did anybody changes/upgraded the springs in their EFR built-in BOV?
Any affect on sound? |

I never changed the spring, wouldn't that affect boost recovery between shifts? Either way, it is pretty easy to hear when it opens, at least it seems so to me. Once pressure post turbo is greater then inlet pressure it should stay shut regardless of the spring, no?

Now that it was 90+ degrees outside, and intake temps were 140ish I am running into TMIC heat-soak issues.
If I do a 2nd-3rd gear run it will boost the same amount in 3rd, but airflow is down 10-15 g/s. If I do a lone 3rd gear run after waiting for a short time airflow is back up. Any thoughts as to what TMIC will fit my GR best, but also fit with the EFR6758 under it? (please don't say GS or Spearco, as TTBOMK they only make the narrower TMIC for the GD chassis) |
