Default when does your gas light come on?

I've noticed that my gas light comes on just under 1/4 of a tank every time I'm that low. This happens when I drive til about 1/4 tank then turn the car off, the next time I start it up, the gas light will be on. on the other hand, if I'm driving a long distance and I drop past 1/4 tank it won't come on until its closer to the bottom line.

This has been the case since I've owned my car (02 wrx). I don't see it as a big deal, but it makes me nervous when the light is on so I fill it up soon after. I usually put about 11-13 gallons in when the light is on. I think it's a 16 gallon tank though.

Is this weird, or pretty normal?
thanks for any replies

Mine stays up like that too.

Sucks...150 miles for the first quarter, 70 for the second.

My gas light comes on at between 13 and 13.5 gallons. Seems to be pretty consistent.

My gas light does not come on until the pointer is just about right on the last line... it's an 04.

You described the performance of my gas gauge perfectly as well. It doesn't budge for the first 60 miles, but the light comes on at about 1/4 tank after the car's been turned off, except when on the freeway (when it turns on much lower).

Default gas gauge

If you start the car on a low tank and the light comes on, but the Needle is not all the way down to the E mark, the light will go out again after you've driven a while.

It will also come on with a very low tank on steep hills, etc.

It averages its reading over a period of time, and it measures the fuel level in the passenger side of the tank, which gradually fills up when you are driving due to the jetsiphon fuel transfere from the return line.

When you first see the light come on solid, zero out your trip odometer, you have about 50+ miles of fuel left. (at least thats as far as I have pushed it )

I currently have 91k miles on my wrx and for the last 1k the gas light and gauge have been acting funny. The gas light comes on and the fuel gauge reads E, but when I go to fill up the tank I can only get 11 or 11.5 gallons of fuel in the tank.

I used to fill it up to 13.5+ when the gas light came on. I'm guessing something is wrong with the gas tank floater.

Car has 15.9 gallon fuel tank with 1.9 being the reserve. The fuel light comes on slightly before (or should) you get into the reserve tank fuel. When my light comes on I generally put in close to 14 gallons

I pushed 421 miles out of a tank once PRAYING I didn't run out

I made it, but I am really curious how far you can get in a wagon with gear on the interstate w/o running out ?

I have an 04, w/ 5500 miles. I just realized... I have never seen the gas light... Hmmm, And if it is broken, I'll need to run out of gas to find out... Sort of a Catch-22...
