at ride height i have 4-5" of bump travel. also have some 4" air bumps that i need to install but want to put a spacer in it so its more of a 2" or 3" so i am not always hitting it. the CO is also setup for dual rate springs but those are just sitting in the back and not installed.

Not particularly difficult, there's just nothing fun about completely disassembling the dash.

If you find an otherwise perfect truck I'd consider it, but it's probably best to buy one that isn't in need of the fix.

what is an air bump used for? more progressive version of a rubber bump stop for big hit suspension?

Advantages & Disadvantages

There are both advantages and disadvantages to running air bumps, some of which are:
Disadvantages:

  • Cost
  • Packaging - as mentioned, they take quite a bit of room vertically, and are generally more work to install than a simple rubber or poly bump.
  • Requirement for high-pressure nitrogen
  • Maintenance - more moving parts means more seals, O-rings, fluid, and wear bands to occasionally replace.
  • Size of axle contact area - because of their travel, they most often are engaged (are contacted by the axle and start to work) earlier than would be a simple lump of rubber. This means, the range of axle positions when contact initially occurs is quite large and therefore the area of the contact pads on the axle must be fairly large.
Advantages

  • Damping - Their ability to progressively damp the upward motion of the axle before a hard stop is unequaled by other styles of bump stop.
  • Adjustability - Easily adjusted for different lengths of travel, as described above.
  • Tunability - With the ability to tune valving, travel, nitrogen pressure, and to a limited degree even fluid volume and fluid viscosity, their function and manners can be tuned in a way that a lump of rubber or polyurethane cannot. If you use a rubber or poly bump, its rate or stiffness is what it is and if it's too harsh or too soft - there's not much you can do about it.
  • Ruggedness - Because they damp the axle by heating the fluid (kinetic energy transformed to heat energy), they can do so reliably and consistently for many thousands of cycles and with little wear and tear. Conversely, a traditional rubber or poly bump stop relies on plastic deformation to damp the axle, as it works its structure is continuously deformed and this results in wear and tear - eventually they chunk or tear and fall apart.
  • Bling - If it's your thing, there's no denying the curb appeal of high-tech machined aluminum air bumps compared to a chunk of rubber.
If you're racing (many hundreds or thousands of bumps in a single event), and / or needing to progressively damp and cushion the up-travel of long-travel suspension to a full stop then air bumps are almost a must. If, on the other hand, you spend all day slowly crawling around trails and rocks, then they probably won't do that much for you and simple rubber bump stop may suffice. If your use falls somewhere in between (eg. you like to occasionally rip around over the rough stuff) then you will have to make your own decision based on needs and budget.

And in case you missed it, here is the kit I was planning on installing:

http://dpgoffroad.com/products/old-m...-wrangler-kit/

It would be that, with 35's and the Highline Kit (and new wheels, even though I hate to not be able to use my white steelies). If I get cold feet financially I can do the suspension, 33's and retain my wheels.

What do you think?

Thanks, man.
You need to figure out what trackbar that is. It looks like it may clear. That steering is stock, and if you ever plan on going offroad needs to be replaced. with 35's that steering is really being pushed. Good news is that setup is working now, so it should work with lower lifts regardless of tire size.

There is an issue in TJ's wherein you run into contact and spacial issues especially when flexed and turning. You basically want this if you are lower than 3.5" of suspension lift, want to wheel, and not on tons/histeer aka hardcore setup-
Factory profile diff cover with lower protection (narrow)
JKS later gen or Currie trackbar that has bends to avoid issue
Adjustable front control arms upper and lower
Steering- savvy/currie setup

There is a really long thread here-

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/tj...it-fit-738948/

My goal is OME springs, 1" BS only and eventually longer shocks.

100lb injectors? Why would you add an extra 800 pounds to an already heavy vehicle?

They are pretty stout transmissions and I don't beat on it....when it goes, it goes.

Exactly...Usually telling them it's "scary" fast sets the record straight. And in a car that weighs over 4000lbs it is scary.
