Bugeye to get a new life
Whats up NASIOC! name is steve and im a n00b.
So, I have a couple real jerks that I work with who know my obsession with driving off road, having way too much fun in the snow, and desperate search for a turbo powered AWD car. So on starts the journey of what should be a wild ride filled with WTF’s OMG’s, and LOL’s. Ill start with a disclaimer, 2 weeks ago I knew nothing about the specifics of subarus. I knew they were awesome and always out of my price range for a toy that is sure to see a lot of abuse. That being said I am in no way a stranger to turning wrenches, building cars, and knowing how to use them how they were designed to be used (well maybe beyond that). Anyway, about two weeks ago I get told about a 02 WRX that a fellow co-worker has up for sale. It was beat up, slightly ghetto, but mechanically sound (ish) So far the only mechanical issue found is that the valve cover gasket is leaking and a tie rod boot is in need of replacement. My first thought was this vehicle is perfect as-is to enter in rallycross; and that I hated the headlights. But, wow how they have grown on me thanks to the bugeye thread here on NASIOC. So, instead of this guy going straight to the rally it is going to get restored to its former glory, and allow for me to pass on some knowledge to my kids, all while maintaining a very tight budget.(so this is going to take a while) Story over here is the good stuff: 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX. 175,000 miles on the body / 135k on the engine/trans. -So, apparently 35,000 miles ago the trans went out on this thing and a shop out in CA swapped in a used (but tested to have good compression) engine and trans out of a 2004 WRX with 100,000 miles on it. The first task at hand is to drain all the fluids, and replace. (the previous owner always took this to the dealer to get serviced and “thinks it has synthetic”.. -At some point the front end of the WRX got hit in a parking lot and mostly destroyed, and in an attempt to fix some bondo got slathered on. -The rear was hit but not hard….. but hard enough to break the license plate lights out. Like any other normal person a strip of LED’s were bondo’d to the bumper. -The tail lights are amazing (/puke) these are not some rare Euro style tails, they are the cheap ebay smoked tails that have the lenses removed apparently to pass an inspection at some point. -The “Sponsored by Blaupukt” should have given this away; the rear bumper is FILLED with expanding foam. -Previous owner purchased car in 2004, said that the original owner had an amp in the trunk. Wires left exposed and hooked up to battery with a 60amp fuse. -and a quick shot of the engine bay (going to need some love here)

Yes it does. Going to put it on stands today to drain out all the fluids and really see what im working with. I found loads of reciepts inside, all from subaru dealers for every squeak, odd feel, and required maintenance at close to proper intervals. I just dont think it received a good cleaning in years.

So, today i was able to go out for a little bit and changed out all the fluids. Decided to go with Rotella T6 5w-40 (because: Internet) for the engine oil, Subaru 75w90 for the Trans, and Motul 90 for the rear. The fluids that came out were beyond unacceptable for my standards and will be sending them off for analysis.
Found out that the MAF is missing the screws to hold it on, secured with zip ties. The coolant overflow tank it the same way. Also discovered that the oil breather/pcv lines that connect both heads together were not hooked up on the engine side, and on the inter cooler piping they were cracked pretty badly. Speaking of inter cooler, the hose from the throttle body to the inter cooler is not hooked up correctly and is dry rotted as all hell. I was also able to get to the engine serial number stamp, but have no clue what it means. there is almost no information on these numbers that i can find. Looks to be : B212187 |

I also managed to find MORE expanding foam... but only on one side. Maybe if whomever installed the ghetto ass tail lights had used all the nuts to secure them, there wouldnt be any rattles from the boom boom.
And to top it off... the trailer lights were vey finicky. Glad the installer prepped the surface for the ground. And used a post that is attached to plastic. Last edited by frankenwrx; 05-06-2015 at 11:41 PM. |

Looks like a decent project keeping in mind that 2002 is getting up there in age. Any rust situations? Funny I thought Pontiac Grand Am too when I saw the original rear photo. I guess that it had some aftermarket body kit (skirts and rear bumper)? I think replacing those with OEM side skirts and rear bumper cover will be vast improvements. Probably fairly cheap too since painted black seems fairly common. Good luck

The body kit is all fiberglass and seems that it was professionally installed. All fiberglass. The next step will be ripping all that crap off and replacing with oem |

So the deal went thru for about 90% of what he had listed. Originally this all came with a grille as well but he could not find it. That being said im alrady far ahead from where i was 2 weeks a go, and now i just have to search for a grille. The plan is to vinyl wrap everything so color does not matter to me at all. Head lights are not oem, but for what i paid... i really dont care.
Holy crap everything works again... Next steps are to replace the torn boot and replace the windshield.. that way if i absolutely had to i can tag it and start driving. After that im on to the rear bumper and engine work |

Sweet! Looks like this project is going over pretty good. If you need some help, PM me, im across the river, but always willing to assit!
Oh and if you still got the hood and fenders, they go for a good penny. Wagons are always looking for wide Sedan fenders and hoods are hard to come by. |

Not a lot to report this week, I have been working to replace all the missing nuts and bolts, along with fixing the air-conditioning. I did get the oil analysis back from blackstone, all looked better than i was expecting. I was unsure of how many miles were on the oil so i just winged it.
and spent some time on the engine bay, still a very long way to go. but better than was before: Last edited by frankenwrx; 05-28-2015 at 04:11 AM. |

So, its been a while since i updated this. I have been taking my sweet time and she is coming together nicely. All i have to do is get rid of the side skirt goo, then off to get it all one color.
New gauges, just had to. Last edited by frankenwrx; 08-09-2015 at 11:42 PM. |
