Question Legacy GT vs. Accord V-6 vs. Passat GLX

Clash of the commuter titans.

So I work at a Honda dealership these days. And there's a Subie/VW dealership right next door. I tried to get a job at Subie a few months ago, but they had no openings. Needing a job, I saw a listing at Honda. I've owned two, admire the brand, and had no moral qualms with selling Hondas.
So I interviewed and got the job.

These three marques in such close proximity, I was struck by a comparative notion, today. For fun, I thought I'd get some opinions from those who have extensive experience with each car. Preferably, I suppose, for those who have OWNED more than one of these.

(Those aren't strict rules. Anyone can post, I don't care. Just trying to give you my reasons, I guess.)

I've read all the reviews, I know the majority votes and performance highlights. But I guess I thought this could be interesting. What did you like? What didn't you like? What do you like better/worse? What do you miss?

Who's got the best selection, and quality, of accessories/options?

Of course there's other vehicles I could've tossed in here, like the Camry. But I don't like the Camry so much, so.... I suppose it's out, for now.

I guess we'll keep this to a sedan comparo, leaving out the wagons (VW and Subaru) and coupes (Honda, such as the V-6 6-speed Accord EX).

Go ahead, take a stab at this!

(Hmm... Just a quick thought: The GT looks a heck of a lot better in person, than it does in that pic!)

My mom is getting a new car in a few months. She wants a new Accord, but I'm trying to convince her to get a Legacy.

I love Accords. I really do. There's a hot-as-hell Graphite grey EX V6 coupe in our showroom, right now. Nice, but something about the sedan I find to be nicer. I think you can get HFP parts separate now, so I'd take a sedan with the carbon 17"s, spoiler and aero underbody kit.

The biggest downfalls with Accords are the lack of AWD, and those godawful Michelins. Which are miles worse than RE92s, if you can believe it.

But... only we Subaru junkies know that lacking AWD is a downfall.

I love when a kid mods his mom's accord ... and you see her driving it around, all lowered , with a body kit and a license plate that says "shotcallin." Hehehe.

Even though you work at a Honda place and work across from a VW/Subaru place, you might as well toss in the Madza 6 and the Altima for a proper clash of commuting icons.

Yeah, just don't EVER look at it at that angle. Whoever did that photograph really hates subaru.

Honda - boring, no torque, and realistically one wheel drive. It's a good car. But it's like having the best designed spoon in the world, when you'd like a fork.

VW - you'd have to pay me to buy it, unreliable, and when it does break, $$$

The Honda Accord, to me, has a lot of similarities with the Legacy. I have no experience with the Passat.

Accord = much better back seat legroom. Certainly feels fast. Big trunk as well.

Legacy = more power, and more snow commuting capabilities. Sharper handling. In my area, I've only seen one other 05 sedan on the highways so its exclusive as well.

Both = can't upgrade the stereo that is integrated with the HVAC

How is this even a comparison? The Legacy GT is much sexier and more engaging than the pedestrian Accord and Passat. I'd undoubtedly take the Legacy over these two.

That's all subjective. I've driven all three within the last few years (Accords recently of course, the GT two weeks ago, but it's been a while since the VW), and I find each to be very "engaging."

Just depends on what you like about an engine.

Could be. Though, you need a front 3/4 view of cars!!

Maybe it's the door moldings. To me it looks as if they'd look better if they were either placed lower on the door, or removed altogether.

I also think the side view would've been better if the doors were angled a bit, like an Acura TSX or something. (Yeah I read that magazine review, too! Haven't driven the TSX, though...)

Exterior style - 1 Legacy 2 Accord 3 Passat
Interior style - 1 Passat 2 Accord 3 Legacy
Power - 1 Accord 2 Legacy 3 Passat (The V-6 is super smooth and has a great powerband from my driving impressions)
Price - 1 Legacy 2 Accord 3 Passat

Overall I'd say the Accord cause even though its not too attractive on the outside I'd be spending most of my time inside and the Honda's interior is just awsome and the way it drives is just silky smooth. It's not as sporty as the Legacy, but If I was buying a car in this market I'd be going fo rthe smoother easier to drive car, and I'd have to say that goes to honda... but just by a little bit.

Consumer Reports compared the Legacy GT to the Acura TSX, Audi A4 and Volvo S40. The GT almost matched the TSX (got the same recommendation).

I see the cars they compared the GT to in a higher class than the Accord or VW you're looking at... and 'winning' still. I also consider the GT as one step up from 'average sedan' like the Accord, Passat, etc. Not saying this as a Subaru Fanboi... but comparing those three... the GT should be the no-brainer.

NWWagon,

The Accord V-6 is indeed very smooth. The advent of i-VTEC makes it so that you don't even feel the camshaft transition, anymore. It's not the on-off feel of the old Prelude/Civic/Integra VTEC systems. (Of course those were all I-4s, but still...)

Too bad you can only get the manual transmission by way of the coupe, with the 6-speed. The big Accord downfalls are the tires and suspension. Nice ride, but not too sharp. That, and the EX models get a 13mm rear swaybar, versus the 14mm models in the DX and LX. Very weird. Not that a 14mm is too exciting, but you see my point.

If the HFP suspension could be fitted to the sedan--and I don't see why not--then adding some better tires would make it a really hard bargain to defeat.

[sidebar]
I'm actually rather excited about the Hybrid sedan that's coming out in December. Civic-esque gas mileage, and 16 more horsepower than the other V-6 Accords, with the IMA electric engine. Pretty sweet deal. Expensive, though. USA Today has a cool video review about it. The fellow says that the Hybrid won't be worth the money, since it'd take 10-ish years of driving to justify the cost vs. fuel savings. I agree, but if you're going to bone up for a top-end EX, I say go for the Hybrid anyway.

We own an 04 WRX wagon and an 04 Accord EX sedan, so my only experience with the other 2 cars here is during recent test drives. While the Accord is a fantastic car (and I've owned 3 prior to buying the WRX), it's not nearly as sporty as the new Legacy GT. The Accord's steering is not what it used to be, feeling a bit vague in turns and requiring a lot of correction mid corner. It is, however, an incredible highway car that's quiet, comfortable, amazingly efficient, and has XM radio standard.

The Legacy's standout feature is the AWD...sure it makes lots of power and has a nice interior, but there are several cars that can make that claim. Few, however, can boast standard AWD in this price range. For me, I'd much rather have all that power going to all 4 wheels rather than just the fronts. Just try to make a quick getaway in the Accord, and you'll instantly lose traction.

The Passat, while quite nice, is permanently off our shopping list given it's VW roots -- everyone I know with late model VW's have been experiencing far more problems with them and I refuse to take that gamble.

There are some days I miss the kick in the pants feeling my VTEC del Sol gave me when it hit that second cam. And thoes B series motors are quite smooth for a I-4, but yeah that new V-6 Honda has is sweet.

I wouldn't give the Passat a second glance.

However, the Accord is incredibly compelling in the bang for the buck department.

It depends what you want. If you want premium comfort features, IMO the LGT LTD just isn't worth it.

If you are only looking at base performance models, the base LGT holds it's own better.
