Growing up in between all the ski areas in southern Vermont we kinda liked to avoid the ritzy aspect of the ski 'industry'. We would prefer the dive lodge with a bar downstairs or something like that.

With that said we wouldnt mind a big of site seeing along the way. Looks like we are hitting Rt 5 to 97 at the very least.

What is the difference between Hood Meadows and Timberline? Super Bowl at Meadows looks awesome!
If you don't want the ritzy resort then stay away from Meadows. Especially on the weekend, as it is packed! Not to mention $80 for a lift ticket now. If its a weekday and there is fresh pow then it is amazing.

Timberline is fun. Yes it is flat, but if you can talk to some locals there are some stashes that are super fun on pow days. Timberlines parks are more on point than Meadows.

Now, you say you like the dive type lodges. Then Ski Bowl would be perfect! It's the largest night ski resort in North America. If you can get there on a pow day it is amazing, especially if the outback is open. The only thing is it is at a lower elevation so it can be hit or miss.

That all said I have a Fusion Pass which is a season pass for Timberline and Skibowl. When you are in town shoot me a message on here and I can give ya some more advice on where to go. Or could show you around the resorts from a locals POV.

Gotcha, well I will keep that in mind man. Yeah we basically just need a cheap place to sleep while in Hood area. We will be heading up from San Fran on Monday so most of our riding days will be during the week...Our last day will probably be a saturday. I am military so I get discounts at meadows, timberline and, bachelor. Vermont mountains are just as expensive if not more.

Most expensive part of trip is rental car from san fran to PDX close to $600 for a WEEK! FML.

When it comes to the drive, how is Route 5 to 97? Is 97 less visual vs route 5 all the way up? I guess it doesnt matter much but since our rental is so expensive maybe a nicer drive to bachelor or hood would be worth the extra drive time.

And to the tree hugger in me...That forestry checker board look on google maps looks horrible :/

If you're going San Fran to Portland you want to go I5 the whole way. 97 leads to Bend.

^Brutal***8230;Sorry to see that you got hurt just before snow season!

On a more positive note; I'm going up to Steven's tomorrow to build a couple of small/fun kickers over by Brooks. Feel free to help build and join the fun! It's obviously gonna be small and pretty mellow but big enough to get some 360's/fun grabs in until the real stuff comes.

Check out vagabond in hood river. That might be a close economical route. Lots of good eats and beer around that area too.

The mountains around here are blanketed. Bachelor has a nice full coat for the first time this season.

From this morning on Bachelor. Damn I wish I was less busy!

Went to Stevens today to scratch the itch. Hiked half way up the park on skiers far left and built a kicker. Hung out all day, good times were had. Amazing snow for the first real base. I dug a hole atleast 3-4 feet deep when building the jump and didn't find any trees. Fresh, unridden pow!

Check out the Huckleberry Inn in Government Camp! They are reasonable for lodging.

Ah, the season is almost here! Spent last Friday at the Ski Dazzle expo, got drunk off Snow Cap, and bought some $300 K2 boots... on sale for 50% off, thankfully.

While there I chatted up the ski resort reps and am thinking about going big and making a trip to Jackson Hole happen. Anyone been? They have a deal if I book before Nov 30th (I think) that is $999 for 6 nights lodging, 5 lift tickets, and air through Delta. Would need a few more peeps to tag along, so if anybody might be interested... let me know.

Along with that, spending Christmas down in Bend for a week of boarding and family time, first time visit to Whistler in early March, and maybe a trip down to Mt Hood at some point. Also, the Prost Ski Trip in February will definitely happen and is probably the most fun day of boarding I've had. Usually around $80 or so, lift ticket and tour bus ride to/from Crystal. Oh, and all you can drink beer. SO much fun.

Will be a Stevens guy this season and going up every Friday, and probably few more week days as well...

That sounds like an awesome winter plan right there. Also, $1k seems like a pretty good deal for lodging, air, and lift tix. Never looked into it though.

Finally had a follow up appt for my shoulder and he feels pretty good about me being on the snow this season. Probably jan/feb timeframe. It will be very difficult to be patient come early January. My daughter has ski school starting the second week so I will be up there, but probably not on a board or skis. Gonna have to dust off the camera lenses and just take pics.

for fun, here's an xray of the shoulder:

Nice! Definitely a solid season ahead for you.

I have a Stevens Pass, like every season, but this season will be much different. Reason being; I have a Crystal Mountain Gold Seasons Pass which includes the Gondola. Worth $1,200…Lets just say I got it for WELL under half through a family friend.

What's awesome about the Crystal pass is that Snoqualmie and Alpental come free with it! I work on Mercer Island so I see many days of riding after work at Snoqualmie to cure the itch until the weekend comes. I also get a ton of free tickets to other mountains around the West/Midwest so I'm hoping to get at least 70 days in this year.

Cheers to a healthy and progressive season for everyone!!!

Sweet, I missed this one when doing some research.

Ski Bowl also looks like a fun place to stay at but Collins Lake Resort is pricaay.

Mt Hood Meadows emailed me back and said that Cooper Spur is a decent place to stay and they have $45 discounted tickets.

Keeping the lodging at around $100 a night would be sweet.

There were some discount deals recently on travelzoo and groupon as well.

Sorry to you are injured jojo! Wishing you a comfortable recovery man.

*added question*

Question for the BC guys. I'm going to pick up a splitty and do my avy training this season. My daily/all-mtn stick is usually a 162-163. My big pow board is a 164 pinner, I also rock a 156 fish for tight tree riding.
Would a 157 splitty with swallow tail be on the small end or alright?
Thanks for your thoughts/input!

I think you should be looking at least as big as your daily or powder board. Touring will be a bitch on a little stick, especially up the steep and deep.

My dailies are a '62 wide & a '64.5. Powder is a '68. My splitty is a '71.
