My gym carries this protein. Seems like a lot of crossfitters use it. Not the best tasting but it doesn't have a lot of crap in it.

Paleo question; What do you do for a post-workout protein shake? I'm looking for a fast, easy, relatively inexpensive way to get about 35g of protein post workout. Right now I do:
1 cup Kefir (12g protein, 120 cal, 20 from fat, 12g sugars)
1 scoop whey protein (23g)
2tbsp fresh almond butter for fat
1 banana
water

but the gym is doing a challenge in late January, and about 0% of that is Paleo, so I need to find a way to get some quick protein between my evening workout and dinner. I usually get home from the gym at 530pm, and don't eat until the wife's home, around 8pm.
Why would you want fat in your post-workout shake?

Fat intake slows the digestion and absorption of proteins and carbohydrates which is not what you usually want post workout.

I hear "the yard" at folsom has some weights and not much other equipment. It's a lot like crossfit, but the entrance fee is steep.

Hmm, interesting. I add it because I was trying to balance the sugar in the banana and the protein from the kefir and powder. Thought you were always supposed to try to balance the three out to help limit insulin spikes.

Am I doing this whole Paleo thing wrong?

At it's core, Paleo is less about exact macronutrient ratios as it is about eating whole foods, and avoiding foods that are pro-inflammatory.

It will slow the insulin spike, but that spike is beneficial post workout where you want maximum protein synthesis.

I understand Paleo, but it's not like you'd be going out of your way by not adding the amond butter fat. Any other time of the day they're good calories to have.

Allllllrighty then. AB will be excluded from today's shake.

On the same topic, kefir. 99% lactose free, but is it pro-inflammatory as it is a dairy product?

What'd be a good replacement for it in a shake?

Not sure what's in Kefir. But casein can be an issue in some people. If you can tolerate it it's probably not a big deal. I found this little blurb after a quick G search:

Quote:
But as this kefir from goat or cow's milk does contain casein it is best to wait until you heal your intestines and establish a flourishing inner ecosystem before adding it ino your diet.

While your inner ecosystem is healing, you can still get the same microflora found in milk kefir by consuming casein-free young coconut kefir. Young coconut kefir has been known to stop sugar cravings, cleanse the liver, aid digestion, and even enhance your complexion! Kids and adults love the bubbly taste and with a little stevia, it can replace your desire for those unhealthy soft drinks.

You can easily make young coconut kefir at home by picking up young green coconuts at a local health food store or Asian market. Once you get the hang of it, making young coconut kefir takes less than 10 minutes.

the only downside is that 35 bucks preshipping is outrageous for a 2lb jug. If you're patient, you can get 5lb jugs on wheycheap or whey2buy for 20-30 bucks.

Anything grassfed isn't cheap. I was responding to Neek's/Damn Yankee's post about protein with extra crap in it.

Maybe we're not all pussies. Actually I didn't even realize I had torn my hand until after the WOD was over. The pic looks worse than it actually was.

I stop when I feel the skin layers start to slide on each other. With my job (and ETD's), it's not that smart to have hands that aren't fully functional.

Oh I'm sure my patients love seeing the calluses I have. I usually have skin pealing off my hands in big chucks.

Gym Tip: do not use lotion on your hands

I don't use lotion, I use Burt's Bees salve.

Oh, and how loud are the callouses when they're pealing? (yeah, it's early, but you still spell like you're from WV).

I may have posted this before, but it's worth a repost. One, because the info is awesome and it's exactly what I do, including the Bag Balm, and I haven't torn in 4+ months. Two because it's Donny Shankle and he's awesome. He could read the phone book and it would sound sweet.
