Default Why does the stock tow hook say "only for use when towing"?

i see a lot of cats running around with JDM style and their tow hooks screwed in... why is this advised against? what could be bad about it?

From one engineering point of view, imho the tow hook was designed specifically for towing (obviously). But what that also means is that other analysis of the vehicle (e.g. bumper design for frontal & offset crash requirements) are not done with the tow hood attached. Instead of not placing that warning and having to reissue a redesigned tow hook that does not affect other factors for example, it would be better to be safe on the legal side by stating the obvious.

A related example would be the tow hook that was standard in USDM MY1995 Impreza (& perhaps older models), which was a fixed hook accessible under the bumper cover. It was later found out/ believed / suspected that it is possible to deploy the airbags if the tow hook, which is somewhat lower than other components in the front underbody side, hits a massive enough object on the ground. As a precaution, they had to issue a recall in which the tow hook was trimmed off, and a replacement sticker was given showing an alternate method of towing using front suspension components.

I'm not saying that this is the reason for the warning, but surely stating that the tow hook shouldn't be attached unless while towing would reduce the need fo such warranty/precautionary corrections.

my 2 cents

could it have something to do with you definately causing damage to anything you hit?

i mean bumpers work ok when you both have them but if a metal hook is smashing into something with the full inertia of the car...you are going to break something!!!

The owners manual for my 2005 RS wagon states clearly that leaving the tow hook in will interfere with the sensors for the airbag system. "The owners manual is your friend"

Because it's a tow hook, duh. But as others have stated, it affects the crashworthiness of the vehicle, and it's possible it could vibrate out going down a rough road.
