Default First time changing coolant in the Rex

Hi there,

I plan on doing a coolant flush for the first time in my new WRX. I have been told that I need to do a 50/50 mix of distilled water and genuine Subaru coolant from a dealership.

Is there a write up somewhere that I can look at? I tried to search for one but no dice. I don't know where I should leak the coolant from, or where the bleeder valve is (I've been told that you just leave it uncapped and let it run?) when I fill it back up.

Or if someone just wants to chime in with their $0.02 that's cool too.

Thanks!

There is a bleeder on the bottom of the radiator. Just unscrew it a little and it will come out. I am unsure of which side it is on but when you find it, have the radiator cap off when you start to let the coolant out so you don't have to wait a year for it to all drain.

Cool, thanks. I should have probably mentioned that this is for a 2004 WRX 2.0 motor. Not sure if it makes any difference.

Here's the informal "how I did it" on my 08 LGT. Get the car in the air. (figure out how to do that safely yourself...I have a lift ) Look for the drain in the radiator. On the LGT, it's on the pass side and the plastic undertray cover is in the way and would take way too much time to get to and there's not room for any normal screwdrivers to get to. I drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the undertray and used a normal philips screwdriver. I put an open drain tray on the floor and unscrewed the drain plug. Note that thus far, I have not done anything under the hood. Why? Because the coolant will be pulled from the overflow tank as it's draining. Neato, eh?

Ok....I leave the tray on the floor and drop the lift. Open the hood and open the radiator cap to get rid of the rest of the coolant. I then put the lift back up and put the drain plug in. Lift back down and add the coolant conditioner and coolant to the radiator. I then add distilled water to finish the fill of the radiator. I close up the radiator and overfill the coolant resevoir tank with distilled water.

I then squeeze the top radiator hose to get air out of the system. Ok....to tell the truth, I pull the radiator cap off and put my hand in place of the cap and squeeze and let go about 10 times, then check the radiator and overflow bottle. If either is down, I overfill both with distilled water. When it is staying put, I put the radiator cap on and close it up. The first couple times driving, I recheck the overflow and radiator when it's cool before driving again. Last coolant change, there was no problem, so I was on my way.

Does this give you an exact 50/50 mix? no. Pretty close, though.

I have found that one of these makes it so so much easier.

simply overfill this funnel after the radiator and all is full. Then after the car warms up and the thermostat opens you can simply plug the funnel with the stopper and no coolant is spilled.
