any way to get alternate VIDEO onto NAV screen (not dvd screen)
I want to retrofit a rear parking camera but I don't want to run composite cables up to the rear view mirror because it will look terrible. Since I have the nav package is there any way to get onto that display without destroying anything? I was thinking of using a switch box to switch the video inputs to the screen but I don't know the specs on the dvd system used for the navigation. Any thoughts much appreciated :-)

You can run the cables up the A pillar behind the cover and underneath the headliner. The rear winshield washer line runs through there and as long as you follow that path there shouldn't be any interference with the side air bag. My body guy showed me the way. The piece of oval plastic near the top of the A pillar covers the only screw holding the cover on.

First, click here to view a picture of the rear of the display unit. The 4-pin connector is what you're after. The top right pin is #1 and is for rear-video-in. The bottom left pin is #4 and you connect your video cable's shield to that. The system uses #4 to detect whether a rear video camera is connected. Once that's done, the system will automatically switch the display to the rear video source whenever you put the transmission in reverse, even overriding the the intro/agreement screens. |

Rear camera
I just bought an 06 Tribeca w/nav and have been wondering about a retrofit of a rear view camera. When you say the "cable shield" do you mean the outer (round) contact on a composite cable?
Any idea what the "composite in" shown in the pict is for? Tks for your thoughts. |

Backup camera video on NAV
I also want the NAV screen to display backup camera video, so I went out this morning and removed the trim under both sides of the dash. I came to one conclusion: the back of the NAV unit is completely and utterly inaccessible. You can't even see it with a mirror. Other than taking the entire top of the dash off, I do not know how you would access it.
I am going the easy route- VR3 wireless license plate mounted camera with 2.5" LCD monitor. The rear reverse light wires are easily accessible at the hatchback, and the display should fit in the little triangular shaped cubby hole on the dash to the left of the driver. Walmart_com had the backup camera and monitor for $99, but they are out of stock. I ordered one for $149 online at another site. If anyone knows the trick to get to the nav unit, please respond. What I am doing will work, but having the NAV unit display the video would be way sexy. |

Tribeca backup camera
I found out how to get to the Nav display and hook up wires to pins 1 and 4. Now I am working on getting it to display a camera picture.

Tribeca backup camera
I have successfully installed a backup camera in my '06 Tribeca. This thread and the posts at http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showt...148#post755148 were immensely helpful.
What I have learned is that the camera or video source must be plugged in to the Nav display WHEN IT IS BOOTING UP, and also the shield or common line to the video source must be grounded to the car. If either of these do not happen, then the NAV will not switch on the video when in reverse. As a matter of fact, if you just ground the lower left pin of the molex connector and boot the system up, the screen will go blank when in reverse because it is expecting a camera to be hooked up. If anyone is interested in the connector on the back of the unit, go to www.molex.com and search for 39-01-3042. That is the part number of the connector that plugs into the back of the NAV display. |

OK, I see yhe pictures you took of the cable in on the back of the display. Did you tap into the +- wires on the composite cable to also connect the video feed to the 4 pin molex connector? I assume the other two wires in the molex are power for the camera?
I have gathered all of the pieces and taken the dash apart once to see if there might be any issues to contend with. If you can clarify these las couple of details I am ready to go! |

Jon (in CT) had it exaclty right the only thing you need to connect to the NAV display are video to the top right of the Molex and shield/ground to the bottom left. You can leave the rest of them off. I hooked another cable up to the RCA jack on the NAV and also to the top left and bottom right of the NAV molex just in case I needed them later. I just didn't want to take the dash apart again if I found out how to get the NAV to display video from the RCA jack. No dice so far.
I ran the video cable down from the dash to under the driver's seat, then picked up switched power and ground from the wires going in to the DVD unit - hooked everything to one 4 wire cable which I just got finished running under the carpet under the 2nd and 3rd row seats, to the right back corner of the car, up the back corner, through the little rubber bellows thingy to the hatchback, down the inside of the hatchback, out of the square hole hidden by the black plastic strip that houses the 2 license plate lights, and down to the camera mounted on the license plate frame. If you do this, I would suggest wearing some gloves or you will need some neosporin and band aids. Also an electricians fishtape is vital. You could just run the video cable back to the camera and power it with the reverse light wires. The way I did it, my camera will be powered up whenever the car is on. Hope this helps. |

2 questions...
1) How do I get the unit to detect a signal through the RCA jack? I fed it a video signal and pressed info, but all I get is the info screen. Is there some way I need to let it know something is connected to it? 2) What is the green connector in the top left? It isn't documented anywhere, so I can only assume it is the RSE connector? What I want to do is hook up a camera for inside the car to keep an eye on my kid, but for that I'll need a signal that is on all the time, not just when I'm in reverse. Any thoughts? |

Well, I now know that the RCA jack works, I went into the monitor diagnostic screen and could select the AUX input, perfect picture. If only I could now find out how the heck to have the system switch to it, and how to do so... The schematics are not much help as there doesn't seem to be any kind of line for AUX switching. I'd really rather not have to enter the diag screen every time I want a picture on the screen...

I can now switch to my own video input whenever I want. Here is eventually what I did:
1) Found the correct Molex connector at the local PC superstore. It is the same connector as the small power jack on an ATX motherboard, so all you need is a $1.50 ATX Pentium 4 Molex adapter. 2) Purchased a video camera at Fry's for $39.99 that has auto night-vision. Comes with 100ft of cable so you'll need to strip quite a lot off it. 3) Removed the monitor and wired up the Molex connector onto a 4 conductor shielded wire. Found out that the ground of the camera is sufficient to let the monitor know a camera is hooked up. When I grounded it to the monitor case I got a ground loop with camera interference. The ground of the power for the camera is enough for the monitor to sense the camera. 4) Cut wire 10 on the back of the monitor (reverse) and hooked it up to the 4 conductor wire. The other side of the nr.10 wire I taped up and is now unused. 5) Tapped onto wire 2 on the back of the monitor (+12V) and hooked it up to the last spare wire on the cord. 6) Ran the cord from the monitor down into the center console 7) Installed a switch inside the center console to patch reverse and +12 together. That way the monitor thinks you are in reverse. NOTE: if you don't cut the reverse wire then putting +12 on the line will turn on your reverse lights any time you switch to the monitor. So far I haven't found any problems with the map not having the reverse signal. I can imagine it may lose a little accuracy if you back out of a parking spot, but the gyro and gps will compensate for that. 8) Hooked up my camera onto the headrest in the back, looking down at the seat so I can see my daughter 9) Connected the camera to the 2 video/ground wires coming off the monitor 10) Connected the camera to a DC plug inside the center console 11) Put all the wires and the switch into a small project box and cleaned up all the wiring. The result is now that I have a kiddie cam so I can watch her while driving. The quality is great and I'm impressed with the night vision lights. The dash is pretty easy to work with and most trim is easy to remove. Total cost for this was under $45 and it took around an hour. Tools you'll need: Screwdriver, wire cutters/strippers,plastic trim wedge, fish tape or long piece of plastic to pull wires, electricians tape. |
