I personally wouldn't avoid the WRX due to oil consumption concerns. But some people should.

I wouldn't expect the Mazda3 to consume oil, but I haven't checked their forums yet to see what owners are complaining about. I would check the forums if I was actually ready to make a purchase, though.

I think I might like the 3 as well if I drove one. I looked at a white one with the body kit, sporty version but don't remember the model. Had black wheels. Looked real cool, but I wanted awd and it seemed like the impreza had more usable interior room to me. I've always liked the WRX hatch. If I have a car that's not a rwd sports car or lux car, it has to be a sporty hatch. So I'll only buy a WRX with a hatch. The sti is cool, but to me the extra it has and costs isn't justified. It defeats the purpose of having it for me. I have gadget filled fast cars, I want something cool but basic. A base model WRX is perfect IMHO. Now, I'm on fence a little with switching them to the 2.0 now. Mine is just fine, but seems the 5mt might react differently than the cvt with regards to oil. I've never driven a Mazda but if its not as planted as the Subaru is I'm out.

I see that 79 is off his meds again always makes this thread more amusing.

if I were to buy a car today: I would buy my imp or a 6 spd outback. I need a car that I can pack with stuff, a stick, and ability to go through tons of snow like last weeks 28" is always appreciated. plow on impreza plow on.

25K on both imps Oil consumption is still the same:
.5 to 1qt every 3.5k depending on how I am hammering it

For her imp:
No consumption until I drive it like I stole it

Usually clutches. That is what really swayed me to the impreza. Hopefully they fixed it, but there were an awful lot of clutches going out early on the Mazda 3

Trolls and broken records have taken it to 200+ pages. Idk - the fanboys just wanna bury all the oil burning talk, or steer the topic away to personal pissing contests. Certain entities come with absolutely nothing to add at all.

flyboy you mean the clutches that would annihilate themselves by 15k due to the fact that mazda cheapend out the 3 clutch in 2010, the only fix to the problem being to put in a quality aftermarket clutch. yeah i will bet good money that is still a pervaling issue.

From Car & Driver:

"There’s a certain familiarity about the way the 3 drives. The steering is light, but the electric power-steering system is tuned to provide good feedback and effort during cornering. Ride quality isn’t much different whether the 3 rolls on the 2.0-liter’s 16-inch wheels or the 2.5’s standard 18-inchers. What we did notice is the 215/45R-18 Dunlop SP5000 A/S tires provide more grip than does the smaller 205/60R-16 rubber on the 2.0-liter. Body roll in either spec is very well controlled, but the 2.5 is definitely the sharper handler of the two."

From Autoblog:

"Since it first hit the scene in 2003, the Mazda3 has been a standout offering thanks to its nimble handling and predictable manners. Thankfully, the major changes made to the chassis have made it an even better driver's car. For starters, it now rides on a longer wheelbase and has a wider track, helping to make it more stable while cornering. Better still, in this configuration, the Mazda3 has also shaved about 100 pounds from its curb weight. Enhanced stability and lowered weight is a great way to make an entertaining car even more so."

From The Car Connection:

"In general drivability, the Mazda 3 also excels. The powertrain is never caught flat-footed, and the accelerator pedal is confident and linear, not just tuned for jumpy response on the test drive. The steering feels precise; there’s never excess body motion; and the four-wheel disc brakes (even on the base SV) are confidence-inspiring."

Is there not a lounge area to discuss other car brands? I would like to see how zgb2506 issue turned out as compared to my issue without having to wade through these off topic posts. Thank You.

Back on topic, in 200 miles since my last visit the oil level is up about 1/16" on the dipstick and the antifreeze level is down to within 1/2" of the low level. It is also getting much worse fuel mileage, down about 7 mpg. I talked to the service manager again and yet another trip to the dealer to have it looked at, he tried to blame the weather but since it has been the same for the past 2 months that isn't it.

I liked the 3 a lot, especially the new look of the '14s. AWD was a necessity, however.

My wife just got a CX-5 that we both think very highly of.

I drove past a new Passat stranded on the highway this morning, road flares and all. It probably doesn't burn any oil though.

Yeah. Every time I see a broken-down VW on the side of the road, I just shake my head and say, "Yup, there's another one."

Does your engine oil look like there is coolant in it? It will have a milky like color to it. Down to 7 mpg? There is obviously something wrong here. Your dealer should be able to do a fuel consumption test for you. How does the car run? Any check engine lights?

Get an oil sample immediately. That will tell you more than anyone here can. Your engine is probably trashed. Accept nothing less than a new long block installed by another dealer. Better yet, lemon-law the car.

It was mentioned a few pages ago in the actual oil burning discussion. Someone said the dealers may have been given the green light to use 5w oil in cars that consume some but not enough for replacing anything.
THIS. ^^^ I want to know about this. I have been itching to put synthetic 5w in this thing since I had the problem, but I don't want to void my warranty. 0w looks like lemonade coming out of the bottle. It is a joke to get the mileage at advertised levels. I would gladly trade 3-5 mpg for little or no oil burning.

Snowdog - issue got resolved. I don't know if you saw my earlier post, but it was a whole cluster of issues (twice now) that they failed to address when re-assembling everything. About 400 miles on the block now. I will keep all of you updated as it progress. I check it at about 250 and it there did not appear to be any burnt at that point. (Keep in mind I was doing 1qt/400mi before this.)

On a side note... Is anyone here actually a Subaru Tech that could answer some questions about these issues? I will be honest, I haven't read through the whole thread. I ask because I recently found a thread on the Subaru sub-reddit where a Subaru Tech posted 60+ photos of the ring replacement and was answering questions about the process. I'd just love to know how often the ring rebuild is working, and how often the shortblock swap is working.

This is particularly interesting

" I have been told it should not use more than 1 qt per 5K miles. This particular engine was using 24.2 oz per 1200 miles, Spec is 10.7 oz."

Do the math there, 1qt per 3600 miles is the spec from subaru

ST, not down to 7 mpg but down 7, from 21-22 to 14-15. Same driver, same warmups, same distances.

I pointed out that after the first rebuild it went through 2-3 quarts of oil in 180 miles. What did that do to the cat? I'm betting that it has significant clogging and that is what is causing the mileage drop. Also there is no indication that they ever opened the block up when they replaced the stuck #3 oil rings. It was almost out of oil, what did that do to the crank, rods, bearings, etc?
It runs ok, but nothing spectacular not that it was a speedy car in the first place. It is to be warm this week and I'll crawl under it to get a sample. The service manager keeps saying that the white stuff is just condensation and it is normal.

Lemon law process started, we will see how long this takes.

If this is true and 1qt consumed in 3600 miles is the new min threshold for new rings, I should already be eligible. I'd like to be able to confirm this before I confront my dealership about another repair.

Good luck! Hope your able to get out of that car and into another one without too much of a hassle. Keep us posted please.

At this point I would like nothing more than to be able to get out of my car via the lemon law. Unfortunately, before my short block replacement, I was told my car was ineligible because of the age/mileage.

I went through the same thing. After the ring replacement, the "low oil" light was coming on in between gas fill-ups. Not to mention one cam sprocket got fried from too much silicone sealant, and they discovered the cams were scored when they replaced the shortblock. I can only imagine all the broken stuff that is floating around in there now from intake to exhaust pipe. I will be rid of this car if and when my finances allow, if Subaru doesn't put me in a different one soon.

By the time there's visible evidence of oil contamination, your engine is already dead.

So they took apart your engine, noticed your cams were scored, threw them back on a new shortblock, botched the build and ruined what was left of your top end without fixing the original problem.

This is why I'd sooner take the engine apart myself than turn it over to a flat rate tech.

You make many good points here. I have long questioned the other effects of the oil getting past the rings. The cats, etc...
You definitely have a textbook lemon on your hands from the way your car situation sounds.
As to your question about 5w, it wont void any warranty to try it out. I did, but the oil consumption (burning) persisted just the same. It did lose about one to two mpg's as a result.
