Cobb Stage II w/Spicy Cams dyno plot inside...
Well,
I finally got a chance to run my car on the dyno yesterday. I ran it at Modern Garage on their Mustang dyno. This is the same dyno that Cobb uses for all of their numbers, which is part of why I ran there. Not only will it let me compare to their posted numbers, but it tells me how my car is actually doing at the elevation I live and drive at. First off, my mods, for those who don't know my set up, or may find this on a search later: 2.5RS 5MT w/100,000mi on the block ACT clutch and pressure plate w/stock flywheel Unorthodox UD pulley Cobb CAI Cobb equal length headers Stromung TT cat back exhaust Cobb "spicy" cams on unported heads Cobb's posted stock HP figures for this car are 122.5hp. I got 151.1hp @ 5700rpm and 156.8tq @ 4500rpm That is a gain of 28.6hp over stock. For comparison purposes, a stock WRX makes 169.9hp on the same dyno. Depending on how you figure driveline loss, we are looking at 205-210hp at the crank. Also, I think Eric was backing off the gas a little short of redline since Trey tells me these cams should make peak HP right around 6000-6200rpm. But, the #'s are what they are, and I am only speculating. Keep in mind my heads are stock except for the cams. They have not been ported. Also, I have no engine management whatsoever beyond the factory ECU. Once it is tuned with Accessport, I fully expect to find close to another 10hp with tuning. All in all, I am very happy with these numbers and look forward to progressing my build and posting more in the coming months. Also, for anyone who is interested, this has had about zero effect on my MPG. I still get 29 hwy when I stay around 80mph and 25-26 on daily basis when mixing city and hwy miles. Lastly, before some fool posts TTIWWP, I have a J-peg of the dyno sheet. I am just looking for someone to host it. So, if you wanna host my sheet, shoot me a PM and we'll try and get this thing up. It is worth seeing. The torque curve is pretty much a flat line that comes on at 2200rpm; hitting and staying above 145 from there until almost 6000rpm.

Any plans on doing the heads as well?
Nice gains on that system, and it makes me look forward to doing that at some point in my cars future. AJ |

Hey Matt, I thought you got the heads done too? I didn't realize the cams alone made that much of a difference. I have the same setup as you except for the cams. Big difference after you got them in?

Not bad, the cams alone added 9.4whp over the Cobb Stage 2. Did you have a shop install them for you? If so, how much? Did you get the titanium retainers and spring/retainer kit?
Also, it'd be great if you could get some 1/4 mile times |

RayQuon: Matt had his cams put in by a shop. Don't know cost. He did not put in spring/retainers. He said that thy are not needed till the rev limit can be raised from the hopefully soon COBB Accessport. Then he will probably put them in.
Matt: That is totally awesome. I bet it screamed on the dyno. I have not seen an RS on a dyno, only those WRX. If you had a who bunch of WRX guys there they would say "Oh look its an RS............. HOOOLLLLYYY **** that's pretty good" Keep us updated |

Kevin Thomas should be hosting the sheet shortly. Let's see if I can answer all the questions in one post, even though some of them were already covered in my opening post.
Car was dyno'd at 5000ft on the exact same dyno Cobb uses. The stock RS and WRX #'s are numbers from this EXACT same dyno. I didn't get the heads because of some major financial chaos that occured in my life (ie. GF bailed on our lease and I lost my job in the same month). Cobb let me apply my deposit to parts, so I got the cams w/o the heads. I wanted the springs, but they couldn't get them in stock quickly enough. The work was done by Bret Carter at Flat4/Mike Shaw Subaru. I had a headgasket failure and got the car in with 17 miles left on the 100,000 mi warranty. My cost for install was next to nothing. And I got a new oil pump under warranty at the same time. I will eventually do the heads, but at this point, I think the bottom end will get done first. This is just because of the mileage on it and the fact that the heads were just rebuilt. I will do the springs as soon as the Accessport comes out because at that point I will bump the redline to 7000rpm. I am pretty sure there is power there. I think Eric was pulling up on the gas a little early on the dyno to avoid hitting the rev limiter. Trey tells me the cams should peak at 6200rpm, and my dyno came up 500 rpm short of that #. I guess we will find out once AP is released. I spoke to Trey and some of the other Cobb guys on Tuesday and they are making progress on the 2.5 AP. It is still not to be expected before late in the year. But they have not forgotten about us and have a guy working on it full time. Just be patient. hawk296 Next time you won't be close enough for the rocks to hit you. ttboy19, night and day difference. And nobody is going to accuse this car of sounding like a Honda anymore. It screams Subby now... |

NO,
The spicy cams are stated to be able to take advantage of a higher redline. I have never seen it written anywhere that they "give most of their gains at redline and beyojnd". And since you were so anxious, you are just gonna have to wait for Kevin to host it The delay here has been that I can only get online every other day at a friend's house and just sent him the sheet 15 minutes ago. It is not because I can't find a host... |

Ok.
Lets see if I got this right. I'm doing this at work between er....working. I resized the image and hopefully uploaded it right (damn firewalls). Here it goes!
And good lord, your torque curve is something to die for. Awesome! Cobb should be paying you for putting up this ridiculous dyno. |
