400 hp...
I can tell you that an STI turbo will not get you to 400 hp, you need injectors forged Pistons, exhaust, preferably a FMIC, intake, and a good tune, probably a even bigger turbo like an blouche 1.5x

Hello everyone I've been a lurker on here for awhile now and I've finally decided to join in on the real fun.
I've had a bone stock 2002 wrx from 2010-2015 and upgraded to a 2010 Sti around 5 months ago. I don't know anything about tuning and aftermarket mods aside from what I've read here. I know the basics of maintaining/servicing my car as I did it all myself unless it was something along the lines of a new clutch/timing belt. Just to lay it out there, this is my DD. I hope to have this car for years to come and I want to make sure all aspects (from engine to drivetrain to brakes and motor mounts etc...) of this process are taken care of slowly but surely. This girl was quite the investment and I want her to stay that way. Anyway I've seen stock Sti's push down about 240WHP if I'm correct. For a daily driver like mine I don't want to go above 300WHP. Somewhere around 280 would be a nice baby step and add some extra kick in my every day commute. Let's get started, my current Sti has the SPT performance catback exhaust and an AEM short ram intake. Both were added by the previous owner so I have no investment in that myself. I'm located in Salt Lake City, UT not too far from rallysportdirect's headquarters. I'll most likely be getting everything through them and maybe even see which pro tuners they recommend up here. My noobie thought process it to just invest in a Cobb stage 1 kit and see what minor things I have to add from there. With that and my SPT exhaust I should at least be nearing in on 280 WHP, right? Thanks and let me know what you guys think. Last edited by jamcgee27; 07-13-2016 at 05:37 PM. Reason: Typo |

Just get a downpipe with a protune, PROTUNE. Youll see the biggest bang for buck there. After that, if you have the money get full 3inch exhaust pre-built or custom fab. This wont give much power but it will remove some of the back pressure from the stock system. Injectors and fuel pump and youll be set!
Your power ratings will vary A LOT from dyno to dyno but a downpipe with protune gives huge gains over stock power, dont bother with the intake if you want to get the power now without wasting time and money. Edit: Keep in mind this is bare minimum to kick those power figures up, I suggest getting other support mods to manage all of this a lot better. 3-port EBC, TMIC/FMIC to keep the car from heat soaking so much, and if you got the stations, E85. The car will sound almost stock so dont expect it to sound too crazy, cat-less DP and intakes will remedy that though. Last edited by Zcypot; 07-13-2016 at 05:52 PM. Reason: more suggestions |

Cool thank you for the info. I've got a short ram already so I'll take a look at some down pipes and the a good tuner.
Maybe here in a few months I'll check out a new exhaust system as a Christmas present to me if I'm feeling it. For now I'm really not too worried about the sound; it may get to me in the future though! |

My mostly stock STi that maybe if Im lucky has 280whp gives me that stupid grin on my face. I would like to have 550 at the crank with somewhere around 500 to the wheels but were talkin a good 4-5 years from now. That I feel is adequate time to A) afford such a build and B) learn to behave and drive such a vehicle with that kind of power. Great thread man.

Concur with almost all the above.
In my estimation, 300 brake horsepower is plenty for the great majority of us who want a "fast" daily driver - but time's marched on. Given the advancements in engine technology, I don't think any amount of money can buy you a new, base model Camaro or Muskrat with less than 300 horsepower. But this doesn't make a 250-horsepower car "lesser" in any other than the technical sense.
Most of the money spent on upgrades, especially to the powertrain, would yield more enjoyment if it was spent on a good helmet, some driving shoes, and a SCCA membership first. |

power to weight
another thing to consider is power to weight ratio. reducing rotating mass, unsprung weight, and general car fat has a dramatic effect on performance. doing this in combination with power gains is my goal.

What if we want 333 HP instead of 400???
Kidding BTW...still getting use to the car. First and only mods for the next 2 years or so are front license plate bracket mod and the Perrin shifter stop. Although I wouldn't mind getting her into the low 300's. |

Yes, great and much needed thread. 325ish whp is my current goal. I would like to go ball bearing for the turbo on my LGT spec B, just need to find the right one...

On my way!
I have a 2016 STI and I'm on my way to a high horse power build. This was a great read and I'm finding out the hard way how expensive it can get. Love my car so far though and doing it the right way. My first Subaru and its definitely a learning curve from other vehicles I've had in the past. Great Article.

Wow, been reading thru this thread - The reliability stuff is probably spot-on, but I have to question the advice concerning using the power.
I've had many high HP cars, but most were RWD (Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaro, Supra TT). The only 2 AWD fast cars for me have been an 06 EVO IX and 12 WRX - both had minor mods only, so, surely no more than 300whp for either one. Both were obviously very easy to keep in a straight line. Logic would seem to indicate that if I was able to avoid the pitfalls that come with having tons of power on tap in my RWD cars, I should be ok with 350-400whp in an STi...however, I have never driven an AWD car at that power level, so I can't say. My question is whether I really should expect to be happy with my realistic goal of 320-350whp in my STi, given that I've owned several 11 sec RWD cars - is 350ish whp, but to all 4 wheels, really that amazing? |

What do you guys mean by "It's too much for a DD"? I have 375hp on a Mustang dyno, and I drive to and from work everyday, get groceries, pick up my daughter from school. If you're not spooling the turbo up at every green light I don't understand what the problem is.

I make about 250whp/275wtq and that feels scary fast to me. I couldn't imagine running 400whp/400wtq. Good thread.

I've been safely DD'ing my 395whp/393wtq hawkeye for over 40k miles. I wouldn't change a thing. Research is key. Time and money are also important... It honestly never gets old. It's not this crazy undrivable thing like some may think.

I was one of those guys lol. We have had a high HP car ('74 Cuda, couldn't tell you exact HP we never dyno'd it, was .1 from requiring a roll cage to run on the drag strip, maybe that isn't impressive but we were proud lol) and it was a blast. After reading through the Unabomber Manifesto and threads like this I have highly changed my train of thought on the situation. Very good information.

I DD a 400whp 400wtq 2650lb GC8 and i can honestly say that besides when im @WOT, there is very little difference from when I was making 250-300. Even when I step on it, there isn't that much of a difference. Yeah, i can get up to 60 in under 4 seconds, and 100 in what seems like a blink of an eye, but at no time do I ever feel like I'm not in 100% full control of my car.
I think whoever the OP of this thread is, just wanted to write about what it takes to build a 400whp sti. I know one thing for a fact... Its NEVER enough power. Once you hit the 400 mark, every WHP gain after that is a very slow proccess, so it doesn't feel like you are gaining anything. In my experience, unless ur making over 600-700 to the wheels in a STi, its all going to feel the same until you get to that point. Making 400awhp in a STI is A LOT safer than making 400RWHP in a Muscle car. RWD is what makes a lot of HP dangerous... AWHP is just FUN! |
