Bath Subaru, Maine
i've put off writing this, because i just hate being vitriolic and negative. but i owe it to my fellows and those who are potential wrx owners to give you this story.
bath subaru, in woolwich, maine, is not a place to make a deal. i wanted to use them because they are located conveniently. they offered me a very good price on my new 02WRX, but then they tried to MURDER me on my trade-in. now normally i never trade cars, rather i sell them outright. but i had this 01RAV4 that i knew was a hot ticket and should have good trade value. my research indicated that its trade-value should have been between 16k-17k. bath subaru offered me 14k. what???!!! i told them they were out of their minds. they said that was all they could get from the toyota dealer to whom they would have to re-sell the car. i told them they were freakin' nuts. so these clowns had to gaul to stand there and tell me that my car needed new tires, hence the price. the car was less than one year old! unbelievable. i asked them if they were crooked, stupid, or both. they said there was just nothing else they could do, that i should go ask their friend the toyota dealer what he would give me for the RAV4 in an outright sale. i told them he would obviously be looking for me and bullsh** me just as they had. so i told them that i would, instead, go to charlie's motor mall in augusta, maine, and see what they said. charlie's owns a number of franchises - - among them subaru AND toyota. i left bath and headed up the road to augusta. about ten minutes up the road, bath subaru is calling on my mobile. seems they have recalculated their numbers and would be able to offer me 15k for my RAV. i tell them, "wow, you were off by a thousand bucks?" they said that they would just keep the car themselves and sell it on their lot, hence the new number. so they were going to pay the toyota guy a grand just to sell the car??? get real. i told them they might hear back from me. i was going to charlie's. okay, here's the punch line. i get to charlie's and tell them about my day, only i naturally omit any mention of specific numbers. i tell them i am pi**ed off at bath subaru and that they can make me very happy if they can better the deal they offered me. Here we go... charlie's price on the WRX was $800 more than the price at bath, BUT charlie's gave me $18,800 on my trade-in!!! now that is gettin' busy. what fun to call the jerk at bath and tell him about the new offer. he was speechless. told me it must be a mistake. i told him he had made the mistake. so there you have it. if you have $3000 to throw in a hole, go to bath subaru. if they treat you like they treated me, they'll smile and look so sincere as they give you the knife. look, if they will lie to your face like that, tacitly call you stupid, and dare you to prove them crooked, what kind of follow-up and service can you expect? i don't have a lot of experience yet with carlie's so i can't render an opinion. i would say without hesitation that you should avoid bath subaru at all costs. had i used them, it would have cost me at least $3000.

well, thanks darwin. but i really didn't set out to do any of this. i just wanted a reasonable business agreement. too bad some people just suck.
...and speaking of darwinism, why does bath subaru continue to exist? oh yeah, they would fall subject to darwin's little-known fourth law, "survival of the smarmiest." BTW- any real dealer with any real interest in customers would monitor this board. here in new england, a good example would be exeter subaru. still trying to find someone wired at charlie's in augusta and get them interested in i-club. |

I will second the service @ bath subaru. I live in wiscasset, about 15 mins away, and they truely try to get you for all you've got. Service and parts are also pretty rediculous. I bought my car used at Norm's Used Cars in Wiscasset, where i've never had any problems. Their service department knows me on a first name basis, and they do incredible work as well. Bath on the other hand just wants a firm hold on your wallet

So i decided to upgrade from my wrx to an sti and bought it down in portland because i had 3 years of experience with them and they had always helped me out. I decide to take my sti to bath for my first oil change since its right by my house and the store manager decides to pay me a visit in the waiting room. The guy starts giving me a lecture on how crappy a person i am that i would buy a new car from a another dealership and decide to perform the maintenance at the bath dealership. I mean i get its a business but to have the store manager come at me like that was a little weird. I guess i'll just have all my business done down in portland.

Back in 2002 when I lived in boothbay, I wanted to trade my 99 eclipse in for the 02 they had out in the lot. They acted like it was the crown jewels or something, they wouldn't even let me sit in it unless i signed on the dotted line. Overall they are the most unfriendly dealership I've ever been to. Its funny I had no intention of even looking into this section until I saw Bath Subaru on the top, It brought back memories of driving by that forsaken place with the poor bugeye sitting out front.

don't go to bath subaru---especially if you are a woman
I went to Bath Subaru with the intention of purchasing a new Impreza----went in with my boyfriend and the saleperson, who was a middle aged man obviously unhappy man, would not even look at me or talk to me. He would only talk to my boyfriend.....I finally just started walking away from him in mid-sentence. I mean, he knew I was the one buying the car. Really unfortunate. That places needs to get rid of the 1950's sexism. Seriously.
Oh---and I have been sure to tell everyone I know NOT to go there. |

Interesting comments about Bath, Charlie's and Evergreen
Stumbled across this thread after a bad service experience this week at Charlie's.
I bought my 08' Impreza Outback Sport at Bath a couple years ago. I got a decent deal (I had no trade in), and the sales guy talked to me more than my husband. All was well, more or less, till I took it to Charlie's for oil/filter change and a sticker. The car had less than 40K on it and Charlie's said the rear brakes would not pass inspection, the front brake pads were "paper thin," and - get this - the cabin air filter behind the glove box needed to be changed. Seriously? I didn't even ask you to look at that! A trifecta of "bend over." I was already a month late getting the sticker, and not wanting to drive around with an inspection sticker sliced in half (that is what they do up here when you car fails) I agreed to the rear brakes, oil/filter change, sticker, and nothing else. When I came to pick up the car, they clearly did not want to give me time to examine the invoice -- just gave me a cursory "we did this this and this, grand total is this." The cute blonde behind the glass reassured me, "Oh you will get a copy." I firmly and politely told her "I would like to look over the invoice before you swipe my card please." So she finally handed it over. The totals for labor and parts for the rear brakes -- which were actually listed as two separate "jobs" on the invoice making it totally confusing -- came to WAY more than the $280 I was quoted. The cute girl at the cashier's counter tried to talk me into paying it anyway, but I balked and finally they got the service manager over. She took a look, said "I'll be right back," then left and returned with an invoice reflecting the quoted price. Still ended up getting charged up the wazoo for everything. Turned out the original invoice (which I wish I had kept a copy of) had charges for both resurfacing AND replacing the rotors. Sorry Charlie's, you can charge me for one or the other, but not both. While they made right on it, I cannot help but wonder if this was no accident. How many times have they added something to an invoice hoping a customer (particularly a female) would not notice or not understand? How many people just hand them their plastic without even checking the invoice? So I will not be going back to Charlie's again. Sorry Charlie. BTW, I too have heard horrible reviews on Bath Subaru, mostly relative to service. Charlie's is off my list now, despite being walking distance from my work. Seeing that my Sube is now out of warrantly, I will likely take it to my local mechanic for routine stuff. He has recommended Evergreen in Auburn for anything that he does not do (like alignments). That is not exactly convenient for me but maybe I can make it work. |
