Default Shifter Bushings

I know there are threads out there regarding this for the WRX, but I couldn't find much on this relating to the 2012 Impreza (or is our transmission identical to the WRX?). I just bought the Perrin front shifter bushings and rear shifter bushing and was wondering if anyone has replaced these before and if there are any tips you can offer. Also, is it necessary that I drop my transmission a few inches?

You do need to drop the transmission a couple inches to give enouch clearance for the ratchet. I would say do it on a warmer day, jack the car up plenty high, use lots of lube, and drink a good few cold ones. I had trouble lining up the rear bushing. I blamed it on the short shifter so I removed that and the linkage seemed to loosen up enough to get the bolts to line up.

dont just do the front, the back one is junk too. I just replaced mine yesterday.

the front is easy enough to get with just a 12mm box end and a big screwdriver to get the gummy/squishy bushing out. when reinstalling drill/dremel (if you have access to a drill press) the hole in the washer out to 29/64" and you wont require any extra washers for reassembly. if you don't there might be a little slop (i used the Kartboy bushings)

for the rear, remove the heat shield, drop the drive shaft bearing (2 bolts) and you will have plenty of room to work with. no need to drop the transmission.

all together, 30-60minutes. it took me closer to 60 because it was the first time i had ever done it, next time i could probably do it in under 20 for both (i use airtools)

Just did mine a few hours ago but I hadn't seen this yet. I didn't drop the transmission, I did exactly what you did, just removed the heat shield. I did replace the rear bushing as well, but for the fronts, I didn't see any need to drill out the washer, if you could explain some more, maybe I should go back and do it? (I used Perrin bushings) If anyone is looking at doing this, my advice would be screw the new rear bushing in first as it makes it easier to align than if you screw in the front bushings then try to screw in the rear bushing.

How do you like the Perrin bushings? Noticeable difference in shifting throws? I'm thinking about installing these as well.

the KB bushings were about 1/16" narrower overall so the washer would bottom out on the stud leaving the extra play. the Perrin's might not have that problem

Definitely notice the difference with the new bushings. The throw is not shorter or anything along those lines (I didn't install a short throw shifter along with the bushings), but the shifter definitely feels more solid when you slot it into a different gear. I'd say it was worth the $60 and if I decide to install a short throw later on, the bushings are already done.

Short throw adaptor comes with the bushings.

Which bushings are you referring to? The Perrin bushings do not come with the adapter.

That does come with the front bushings, but not the rear bushing. I just purchased the bushings only, if I end up doing a short throw I'll probably buy a kartboy or something like that rather than the adapter.

Default Perrin short shifter kit question

I know this is an old post, but can someone confirm this? Is it true that the bushings included in the Perrin short shifter kit are only the front bushings? If so, does that mean that the front bushings cause most of the sloppiness (moreso than the rear bushings)?

I think the front bushings looked more stable than the rear. The rear bushing is really squishy but the way the the rear sits it mostly affects vertical slop and a little side to side. The front is mostly front to back slop. You really need both to get full benefit because the flaws in the one you don't replace will become very prevalent

When you look at Perrin's bushing video, you can see the front bushings allowing a lot of motion that's eliminated by replacing those bushings.

But since the rear bushing is a weak point might as well replace it too. It is only $30, and you are down there already, I figure do it once and done, rather than again in the future. I have replaced other bushings with poly in my Buick and never had to touch them again even after 160k

Does perrin make a rear bushing? Edit, yes they do.

You're probably right. I assume this is the part I need, right?:

That looks correct, the kartboy one has metal sleeves built in which should help prevent over torqing or distortion of the bushing over time.

http://www2.kartboy.com/x4/product.p...cat=254&page=3

The fronts should be the same though and brand doesn't matter in that case imho

OK, thanks for the info.

So I'm in the process of reading through the service manual to get myself somewhat familiar with the process for installing a short shift kit and bushings (and to convince myself that this is within my capabilities). In this diagram, is #23 (which they call "cushion rubber") what you're referring to as the "rear bushing"? And is #25 what you're referring to as the "front bushing"?

The other thing I'm wondering is if I wouldn't like the way people are saying that the Perrin short shift kit moves the shift lever forward. What do you guys with the Perrin kit think? How much further forward are you reaching for the shift knob? Is this bothersome?

If I went Kartboy, is this the correct kit for our Imprezas?

http://www2.kartboy.com/x4/product.p...0&bestseller=Y

Am I right that this Kartboy kit includes the front and rear bushings? For those of you who installed the Kartboy or Perrin kit (including new bushings), does it increase drivetrain noise in the cabin?

I'm trying to decide if the Kartboy kit is worth the extra $75 over the Perrin kit....

Of course, I should also consider the Cobb combination of parts for slightly more $$ than the Kartboy:

http://www.rallysportdirect.com/COBB...-Throw-Shifter

http://www.rallysportdirect.com/COBB...ifter-Bushings

http://www.rallysportdirect.com/COBB...hifter-Bushing

The Perrin is certainly the most economical solution....

Yes those parts are correct. 23/25 are the bushings, I actually still have mine and can try to get a pic later (I seem to have caught the flu)

Personally I have the COBB lever and the kartboy bushings, when my wife ordered them for Christmas, the total was actually less than the kartboy kit. I have nothing but good things to say about what I have. The lever is in the stock position, just about 1" lower. The shifts are crisp and solid, and there is no additional noise in the cabin, even the amount of vibration isn't much different and I don't notice it any more. You can feel some extra vibration, but you can't see it, and like I said I don't even notice it anymore as it really only seems to be at idle.

Sigh. I can't decide between a short shift kit vs. a 19mm rear sway bar. I have a Sport Premium, so it's not like there's no sway bar on my car already.

Or maybe I should just leave both the shifter/bushings and the RSB stock and save my money. It's not like I dislike my car the way it is.

Since I know you enjoy the act of shifting a car, I vote for the shifter mods. It is night and day difference and so much more enjoyable. I wish it came this way from the factory

Or maybe I should get the Cobb lever and not bother with swapping out the bushings.

Lots of options. I guess I can't decide which improvement I'd appreciate most. I would think I'd appreciate the short shifter, since that's something I use daily, even if I'm not taking corners fast.

The lever by itself makes a nice difference. Eventually you will want to do bushings too, but you could get by with skipping them for now.

Shifter still gets my vote

I think you're right.

Did you try driving your car with just the Cobb shifter, before adding the bushings? If so, was just the shifter a huge improvement? I would think it would be nice to adjust the throw length and the shifter height, even if the feel isn't as solid without new bushings.

And to confirm, is the Cobb shifter link I pointed to a couple posts earlier the correct shifter?

I didn't drive but I did sit there and test it for a few minutes, it makes a huge difference in throw and feel. The bushings just further firmed up the feel.

Yes that is the right one
