Minnam Stage I kit performance
I currently have the Stage I kit by Minnam but I'm not seeing any of the 45-50bhp gains that they advertised. My 0-60 times have decreased by about 1.25secs but the car seems to have lost some torque at lower RPMS. I'm often challenged at stoplights by Integras, Escorts, Accords, Civics, etc and they can usually beat me for the 1st 50-100 feet or so until I hit 3rd gear. The install was done by TAD so I don't think there's a problem with the installation. Anyone else have similar experiences?

seems to me that ur compressore is spooling up kinda slow, have u made any mods to ur cat-back, diameter wise? i had the same prob, but when i increased the stock size tubing to 21/2, good gain at the stop light. hope this helps.

kid22 is right, if you haven't opened up the exhaust it would probably be a great idea.
otherwise maybe you're not launching hard enough... how are you taking off? |

Thanks for the replies. I'm still using the stock exhaust system except for the down-tube supplied by Minnam. I want to changeto the Blitz Nurspec system but at the moment, the car's performance doesn't justify the aggressive look of the Blitz system. If you're going to put styling parts that make the car look fast, the car should be fast. Performance first! You guys are probably correct in saying the exhaust system is part of the problem. When I upgrade to Stge III, I'll also upgrade it.
I usually launch at around 2500rpms. I know it's kind of low but my reasoning is as follows: like all 4 cylinders, the Subaru is quite loud when revved. The turbo spool-up sound is also quite audible. I don't want to sound like I'm flooring it everytime I'm at the stoplight. In addition, I don't want the Honda, Ford, Hyundai etc. guys to think my car is struggling to keep up with them. TarmacRS, I'll let you guys see the car when it's at Stage III. |

You should then get a supercharged Buick. They are quiet and fast. Since you are not willing to rev, that's why you're losing to escorts. So what's your point of even putting a turbo on? Performance = louder on most cases. Have you heard a quiet F1 car? Or a quiet WRC racer? hmm......

dead-eye - I'm assuming you don't have a clutch in the car. What you have to realize is that turbos do not give off positive pressure until 3000-3500rpm. Sure they spool up a bit, but all you're getting is bog when you launch that low. If you want, let it slip in at 3500 or 4000 rpm and you'll see a MUCH improved preformance.
BTW, being a member of the Midwest Club, I'd like to invite you to the meet we're having this Sunday. It is at Greg's house in Highland Park at 1PM. If you're interested, email me and I'll send you directions (since Greg only has email at work and won't be able to answer til Monday). We're expecting about 15-18 people (don't remember the count exactly), so you'll see more then just a few of us. Also, Robert should be there with his newly-supercharged RS. |

I dusted a Mustang GT a few nights ago with my Stage I Legacy turbo install. But my exhaust is 2.5" back and my small IHI probably spools much quicker than that big Garrett.

8Complex-- I've measured a full 12psi by 3400rpm on my Minnam Kit with the TEC-II controlling boost. 5psi comes in right around 2500rpm. At any cruising rpm, full boost is essentially instantaneous. So quick, in fact, that I've actually tailored my boost mapping to slow down spool up.

8complex,
Thanks for the tip. I'll try launching at 3000rpms. I have an ACT Street Clutch which is a bit stiffer than the original. I can't make it tomorrow since I'm on call at the hospital. Maybe next month. |
