H9 were never made HIR, the only HIR bulbs were 9005 and 9006. HB3 is another name for 9005.

Now what they call HIR are the 9011 and 9012 bulbs (high and low beam respectively). Last time I checked (one lr two years ago!) lnly the 9012 from philips had the HIR technology, not the 9011. Either way they are a very nice upgrade to the 9005 and 9006 they can replace with an easy mod.

Replace 9005 with 9011 and 9006 with 9012 respectively, depending on your application.

frederik is correct, no such thing as HIR H9.
I got these for my '15 high beams, supposed to be HIR although you can't tell by looking at them-
http://www.rallylights.com/9011-hir1...ared-bulb.html
They are bright although I haven't had much occasion to use them since I'm mostly in well-lit areas and not the middle of nowhere, haven't done an A/B comparison with the stock 9005's either.

Therefore, since my highs are HB3, aka 9005/9011, then no HIR lamps for me.

Thus, my order above. And they are a direct fit without mods. Looking forward to a more coherent light output with highs on, as opposed to the present excellence of the LEDs muddied with poor yellow light with the highs on.

Seems this thread needs updated.

Coherence as in color I assume. Other than that the beam will not change much. The choice is up to you, personally I would choose 9011 (atcual HIR tech or not) over any 9005 halogen, because of the extra light they produce. I do not care about color match though so it makes sense our choice is different. I have HID bixenon and also halogen 9011 Toshiba high beam, which is pretty yellow next to the HID.

On the topic of HIR, I doubt any 9011 or 9012 bulb actually uses the HIR technology anymore. HIR1 and HIR2 being just a different name for the bulbs, the specification does not force to use the infrared tech, but merely to have correct burner placement, lumens output etc. My guess is Philips decided it was not worth it to use since they can sell 9011/12 replacement bulbs that meet the spec without having special equipment to manufacture actual HIR tech bulbs. They do have pretty high tech halogen burners though so you are not having bad bulbs at all with their 9011-12.

That's a good deal on the 9011's at Candlepower. I was ok with what I paid for them at Rallylights but this is even better.

I've been planning HIR replacements for my regular halogen lamps for a long time. In an ignorance limbo now.

HELP please.

Never mind. That was a FAIL. No more H9 HIRs apparently. HB9s are normal halogens now. NOT what I was looking for.

Consulted Owner's Manual... my 2016 WRX uses HB3 high beams.

Ordered OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited HB3 two-pack from Amazon.

Carry on.
The "cap" is for low beam glare, not IR reflecting.

H9 doesn't have it because it is a "high beam" lens, not because it is not an HIR.
That is also why it is so much brighter than the 55w H11 low beam in the Impreza low beam socket, it is intended to be a high beam and is a 65w bulb.

Care is needed when aiming light after the H11 to H9 low beam mod though as no glare protection on the low beam anymore like the H11 had.

SeeeeeYa, I saw your post about ordering the OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited HB3. I am just wondering how the install went and if you are happy with them.

Has anybody had issues with fitment of the bulb into the housing? Maybe I'm just doing something wrong but I can't seem to get the tabs on the bulb to line up with the cut outs in the housing

Did you modify the tabs as described? They are not directly interchangeable, you need to do the mod.

Anyone have more before and after pics? Is it really worth the go?

Also, OP, if you can update your OP, that would be great!

Just go to a parts store, buy a pair of standard H9's and try it yourself. A few dollars and a few minutes and you'll have your answer.

I'm also using the 9011s from Candlepower. They explain how to modify them to replace the 9005s.

You don't have to. You can just angle/wiggle it in without too much trouble. I just did it a few days ago.

Default Great mod and great thread

Did this one, very happy with it, thank you for posting this thread! I forgot to snap a picture, but on a 2017 the h9 cast at the same "line" as the h11 on my garage door. Would someone be willing to tell me about the issues with bulb orientation they may have had? I'm not seeing how the h9 can be oriented any direction besides identically to the h11. Thanks.

Default Availability of H9 Bulbs

I'm interested in this mod but am having a hard time finding the H9 bulbs in anything other than the basic Sylvania bulbs. Anyone else seeing limited availability of H9 bulds? What is everyone using?

That's all you need.
The whole point of this is that an off-the-shelf H9 has higher output than a standard H11. Just snip the tabs and pop it in the low beam for an instant lighting improvement, no blingy aftermarket bulbs needed.

So is the general consensus that this mod is better then going with an LED headlight system?

Yeah since LED headlights suck especially when stuck into a reflector not designed for them.

I've done the H11 to H9 mod in my '12 Impreza and '09 WRX with great success. I'm planning to do it to my '17 WRX this weekend when I have time.

The light output is greatly improved when driving at night. The only negative I've found is the bulbs may need to be replaced sooner. I think I typically got a year to a year and a half out of my bulbs. Sometimes they would die sooner and sometimes later. Easy and cheap enough to replace yearly if necessary.

Hi...Did this today and it's definitelly a noticeable difference. I used Phillips OEM replacement H9 bulbs from Amazon. The Subaru OEM H11 bulbs are also Phillips and look almost exactly identical except for the color of the plastic and the tip of the H11s is painted over.I had the H9's in and decided to take a photo comparison and when I put the H11s back in I thought I did somehting wrong because it looked so dim, but in reality the H9 bulbs are just significantly whiter and brighter.

Never noticed before the swap (successful), but do does the low beam normally stay on when turning on the high beam? I saw a couple of posts referencing this so I was concern about potential heat issues when both are on for a prolonged time.

Yeah that's normal. Low and High = high beams. Just low = low beams.
