Default Big problem! Please help! :(

While this is not directly Impreza related, I was hoping there might be someone with enough general Subaru related knowledge that might help me.
While replacing the front sway bar bushings on my 1996 Subaru Legacy LSi Wagon, I determined I needed to remove the front suspension cross-member (the front jacking point for the car) so that I could drop the sway bar down enough to get the bushings on. Unfortunately I did not notice that the 2 rearmost bolts holding the crossmember on were threaded into nuts (which I later found to be largely inaccessible) on the other side of the suspension member. I promptly proceeded to shear the heads of those 2 rearmost bolts off (I'm an idiot).

I've made a few attempts at extracting the damaged bolts, but to no avail, I've now (finally) conceded to the fact I need professional help. However, I'm not aware if the vehicle is in a driveable condition without having that crossmember in place, or am I going to have to have the vehicle towed? Also, with the car currently sitting on jackstands, what would be a good alternative jacking point which to lower the car from?

Thank you very much for your help!

Actually upon more reading it would appear that the piece I removed was actually merely a jacking plate, and serves no other real purpose than to jack the car up and down. Therefore I shouldn't be worried about any torsion or anything caused by driving the vehicle without it in place.
Am I correct in assuming this?

My only problem at this point, assuming that is correct, is to find another jacking point to get the car down...

As far as removing the bolts go I've tried everything short of drilling them out completely.

Unfortunately I don't have a method of making International Long-Distance calls at the moment.
Thanks for the offer to call you though.

Have you tried heating the bolt s with a torch? sometimes this can loosen the remaining section enough to get it off at least.

Yes, I've tried heating, penetrating oil, vibration, vibration while turning with an EZ-out... everything short of drilling the bolt out completely...
All I really need to know now is;
Does that jacking plate that goes in between the 2 suspension members serve any purpose other than offering a point to jack up the front of the car? (Any torsional support or whatnot?)
The plate is off right now and I need to know if it's safe to drive the car around without it.

Thanks!

You are talking about a roughly rectangular piece of stamped steel, about 5"x6" held on by 4 bolts...two foreward and to aft....this piece is attached just aft of the lower portion of the oilpan?
If so...it is not a structural element of the chassis, and yes you can drive the vehicle without worries.

See: http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=200-1

The part indicated by #20510 Plate jack-up.

Yes! That's the part. The reason I asked is because unlike that parts diagram seems to show, on the legacy the Jack plate spans between the front suspension cross-member and something else. I just wanted to be sure that it was in fact not serving any structural purpose... Although looking at the thing it's hard to imagine it would, but then again, better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks a bunch for your help!
