Default Official: 2011 Shelby GT500 revealed with lighter aluminum engine

Quote:
Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) revealed today the new 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, the newest version of the legendary muscle car featuring an all-new aluminum-block engine, even better driving dynamics and handling as well as improved fuel economy and more horsepower than ever. As we said the new car carries an all aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine delivering 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque (a 10 hp incrase comparing it to the 2010 model). And this is not all, as the engine is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivers a better power-to-weight ratio, handling and steering precision, acceleration and an impressive fuel economy.

his new engine has its roots in the iconic Ford GT because the new 5.4-liter V8 is in fact an evolution of the GT engine, with improved block structure through the use of a unique bulkhead chilled process and six-bolt billet main bearing caps. The 2011 Shelby GT500 will be the first modern Shelby without the gas guzzler tax, because it will deliver a fuel consumption of 23 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg in the city (up from 22 mpg highway and 14 mpg city for the 2010 model). The 5.4-liter V-8 achieves 80 percent of its torque between 1,750 and 6,250 rpm, giving the car a higher level of performance feel.

New for 2011 is the SVT Performance Package designed for enthusiasts who want even more performance out of their Shelby GT500 for racetrack-ready driving dynamics. Thiss\ package includes the all-new Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires that SVT engineers worked directly with Goodyear to develop, new and lighter wheels, a higher rear axle ratio and stiffer springs and it is available on both the convertible and coupe. Data show the 2011 coupe with the SVT Performance Package is 3.0 seconds faster per lap than the 2010 Shelby GT500 on a 2.3-mile test track. The 2011 GT500 also gets a new exhaust, roaring with an even more aggressive sound than the 2010 model.

The 2.75-inch exhaust with all-new tuning helped to deliver the additional 10 horsepower. Carried over from 2010, the 2011 Shelby GT500 features AdvanceTrac, Ford’s stability control system with several options for performance.
New for 2011 is an optional glass roof that also protects interior fabric material from solar radiation deterioration and discoloration by reducing solar light transmittance. Other new convenience technologies include: Standard HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps, MyKey programmable vehicle key, integrated spotter mirror and fold-down rear headrests.
The 2011 goes on sale in the spring. The coupe will sell for $49,495, including delivery charge.

For 50K I think this is a steal honestly.

Of course I'd buy used but the same is to be said for a CTS-V.

this is one amazing car indeed. seeing 2-yr used gt500s are now on the market for ~38-40k, this is one hell of a bargain few years down the road.

one thing i cant help but wonder is how the aluminum block will hold up to mods and increase in boost. i am not sure if this is the end of 10-sec GT500s with stock engines.

Doesn't make any sense. The new GT350 will have about the same horsepower as this with its new Supercharged Coyote 5.0 motor and it was estimated to cost $63,000.

The GT350 is solid Shelby as opposed to this GT500 being Ford+Shelby.

I dont know guys i dont really see the value to be thatttt wonderful(not saying its bad). A base c6 vette, not to mention a z51 package car, will do a pretty good job of outpacing a gt500 around any track(the base vette a touch slower trapspeed in the 1/4, ~115 vs ~113mph for the vette...a base z51 package is in the ~115's though), cost less, gets better gas mileage, has a 100k warranty stock?

Although, this newer gt500 if all weight stays the same, minus the savings from the engine and the 10hp gained from the new tune...should trap ~117's or so.

they are under the "powered by" cover, you can see the wires leading out of the back of it.

oh another note, it's getting a glass roof!

and the wheels look great.

+1 There's definitely a lot of engine in the GT500 and the latest CTS-V.

Sounds and looks great! Though the regular GT seems even a greater leap forward.

A base model 'vette is $48,930, so a whopping $565 less. For that you get 2 less seats and an interior that's an order of magnitude worse. I can see why some people would want the few tenths around a track, but the GT500 would be just as fun without having to sit in a fisher price interior. Not to mention stuff like standard HIDs and SYNC.

I would most definitely take a GT500 over a C6. I wouldn't even consider a C6.

Unfortunately you are looking at a difference of 5 or more seconds around a decent sized track, which is a very very large gap, not a few "tenths". Just go look at c&d's lightning lap results from past for quick reference.

And another unfortunate real world consequence of the GT500 vs a vette. A gt500 is a "Shelby GT500" at the delearships...you are a lucky man to pay msrp. Meanwhile a corvette is easier considered a run of the mill vehicle, which if you are on this forum chances are you know how to haggle at a dealership. You see the price difference growing before your eyes now dont you? (my brother paid 46.5 OTD for a 08 2lt z51 6spd, OTD)

The interior? Ill give you that, the inteior is nothing special in the vette, the new dash design and layout is not bad, the seats are junk. The mustang interior is two clicks above nothing special. But then you also have the 100k mile warranty out of the box to back up the stuff that really matters in a sports car with the vette as well.

Lastly, the 2 extra seats you refer to as an advantage in your ~50k sports car(yeah thats what the gt500 needs, some more weight from more people)...also comes with a wonderful 11 cubic feet of storage so you can possibly pack a picnic for those 4 individuals. Atleast with the 22 cubic feet the vette posses, there is more then enough room for a couple weekend bags and a cooler.

You would choose the mustang why?

It will be all personal preference, the GT stang should be more limited in numbers than the base Corvette, should depreciates less compared to the base Vette? I've gotten a couple of rides in a Z06. Amazing as the ride was, the interior was horrific for a car of that performance caliber. I couldn't believe there was what appear to be stitching molded into the various plastic panels on the door and dash to simulate a leather cover look. That's just down right ghetto!! Back to the GT500, good job Ford!!

Can mods please remove those posts that AGAIN compare mustangs to vettes? stop beating the dead horse because they are completely different cars. Ppl should compare the vette to 370z or cayman s.

Comparing the mustangs to camaros, challengers, or even the M3 will do just fine....

Default In car video of Lucky the GT350R attacking Mil Cumbres

Quote:
The La Carrera Panamericana open road rally is a throwback to an earlier time. With real cars running on real roads, the La Carrera route follows pretty much the same path that crews took back in the Fifties. Over the years, La Carrera has also gained a reputation for being one of the most challenging events on the annual calendar. The term challenging is often politely interchanged for the word dangerous. The most challenging of all the La Carrera stages is considered to be the Mil Cumbres stage, where many cars have been lost. Lives too.

Regular contributer here in The Garage, Gary Faules, took on La Carrera in 2007 and took the win on the Mil Cumbres stage. Now that the documentary movie about Gary’s trip to LCP has been released, he is free to share the in car footage they shot during the race. The first video we’re going to share is that historic run up Mil Cumbres with it’s roadside cliffs and even a burro taking in the spectacle.
Following the 2007 running of the La Carrera, the decision was made to remove the stage from the event. The video after the break may well be the last competitive event held on the road.

Video is shot in HD, so be sure to watch in full screen mode. The run may sound a bit quiet, as the mics were actually helmet mounted. Don’t kid yourself though, these guys are flying!

The Lightning Lap was a Corvette Grand Sport and a 2010 GT500, so fairly different cars. The base Corvette is certainly slower and the 2011 GT500 is certainly faster.

I get a supplier discount at Ford, so I can pay below MSRP.

Most people use their car for more than just track romps. I like having the flexibility.

I was actually refering to 08/09 lightning lap times. A z51 still went ~3.01, im sure a base wouldnt be to far behind. Anyways cool man, def cool car. Part of my distaste for the gt500 when it first came out was that they made it so damn heavy. They are finally makeing steps in the right direction to make things more effecient instead of just throwing crap tons of hp at it. Looking forward to seeing how the new gt500 performs for sure. And ill agree the sound of the s/c'd 8 out of the stang>ls anything in my book.
