How fast are 2001 Jetta 1.8t's?
I like the look but more importantly my girlfriend does. I was just wondering how fast they are. My girlfriend has become a speed freak(not the drug) since I got my WRX. But doesnt have the cash for that. So how do the two compare? Is there a better Jetta, in the new body style?

a little off the topic of your post but I wouldn;t buy a n Jetta. me and my Girlfriend had one for about a year and fianlly got rid of it because it had so many problems. We bought it because it looks good (especially the interior lights at night ) but we had something like 4 window motors go out, this waxy stuff oozed out the doors and got all over the car the entire time we had it, and some other minor problems but enough to annoy you. And the Warranty on VX sucks.

I'd say go for a eclipse gt, they're faster than the jetta, and I've heard they are pretty reliable

VW's are OK
Hmmm, since the WRX is my first non-VW vehicle in 10 years, I think I would still recommend one. No, they are not quite as reliable as a Scoob, but they are arguably more interesting. Plus, if you get a Wolfsburg 1.8T you get a really nice package with a 170-ish hp engine for just short of $20K if you talk the dealer down. PLus, with a chip and a couple of other cheap mods (~$1000 or less) you have a 200-225hp car at sea level. Not a bad deal, and they have good stuff including nice comfortable seats and killer stereos in them. Yes, the WRX is a better deal, but not for the amount of money you would spend on the VW. Plus, the VW's have awesome warranties including free 24k worth of service.
There are plenty of GTI's and Jettas, BTW with the 1.8T engine and $2000 or so in mods (K04 turbo, chip, filter, catback exhaust) running 13's in the 1/4, so they are fast enough with some mods. JaMa PS - I would not buy the Eclipse with the V6 if you GAVE me one. I have had very bad experiences with the Mitsubishi stuff. Ill just leave it at that. |

They have a better warranty than they ysed to but it is still not the best. This year they went to a 10 year/100,000 mile Powertrain warranty which is good but does not transfer to the second owner but the basic warranty still sucks. It is only 2 year/24,000 miles

Eclipse ahahahahahahaha! That's a laugh, what a boat! I love the VW 1.8t engine. My friend has a jetta that runs a 13.9 with only a chip and exhaust. Go for the Golf or GTi though, they are a bit lighter and more practical.

I think I could help with this one, cause I work at a VW dealer. For 2001, you get 2years/24000 miles bumper to bumper, and 10 yrs/100000 miles powertrain warranty and free maintenance. The 1.8T for 2001 in the Jetta, GTI and Beetle makes 150 hp. The only car with the 1.8T that gets 170hp is the Passat. For 2002 models (which are in by the way) the Jetta/GTI/Beetle with 1.8T, make 180hp. The Passat is still at 170hp. As far as their reliability goes, the cars with the 1.8T have been decent. The problematic ones have been those with the 2.0- 115hp engine. As people have already mentioned, with a few hundred bucks, you can bump the hp to over 200. You could get a Jetta GLS 1.8T without sunroof and alloy wheels with a five speed for $20K. Maybe even a little less. I think it's a good deal. The handling is pretty good, but obviously not as good as say the WRX. All in all, I think that she'll like the car, and if her luck is any good, she'll never have a problem. See, that's the thing with VW- they are very inconsitant- you could have one car that wont have a loose screw for 10 years, or you could have one that 2 days after you drive it you have nothing but problems. As I said, the 1.8T has been pretty good in that area, but still....
Hope I helped, Danny |

sorry!!! what i meant by we're lucky here in canada,is that
we get a 4 years/48000miles bumper to bumper warranty, 5 years/60000 miles powertrain warranty, and 12 years/unlimited milage warranty against perforation nice goin' vw!!! but like you've read they're not really consistent reliability-wise!!! but if i was to own another make than my subie,it would have to be a vw!!!great road manners!great stereo (way better than ours)and a good solid feel to them... i once read somewhere that subaru was considered as the most european-feeling japanese car... |

my little brother just bought one so i went to a local dealer to see what he got into (since he lives about 11 hours away) and test drove one. I didn't get to drive the standard, as all they had were the automatic triptronic stuff, but it was a nice car. Slow in comparison to my WRX. I didn't like the weight of the steering, and was not totally impressed with the "sport suspension" package, but overall it was a pretty decent little ride. The cool thing about VW is all the cool gadgets that they put in their cars.
The sales guy quoted this car as having 180hp. I know i drove the auto, but i was expecting a bit more. On the test drive the guy took me to a really windy section of road where i got to really blast though it in the jetta. It was nice and tight, although it didn't seem to be as sharp as the WRX. The turbo is very small, and boost hits really early though, so you are not exactly caught in a bind if you exit a corner too slow. The suspension seemed to take the rough patches of road pretty well, but the experience was not anywhere near the WRX. The sales guy did ask us to slow down for one railroad crossing though because he said if your not careful you can get airborn. I asked my wife if she didn't mind blasting the same road in my WRX for comparison sake. The WRX is not only faster, but turns better as well. I didn't slow down for the railroad crossing, and it was so composed going over that thing full bore at about 70mph. I didn't think we got any air on that, but i kept my foot in it the whole time and when i looked at my power meter -iD after the run it said 360hp. I know thats way too high (usually around 290 on my test area in a full 3rd gear pull) so i started looking at the curve. One little spike at about 70mph... guess i must have gotten some air afterall because that spike was HUGE and since the Power meter -iD reads the VSS, it means i must have been spinning the wheels in the air across the tracks. I came away feeling that the1.8t was a nice little car, and might not even make a bad second car, but it was not anywhere near the drivers car that the WRX was... -Nathan |

If the Golf is still made in Germany, get that before the Jetta. There is a correlation between incidence of mechanical defects and the car being made in Mexico. All American Jettas are from Mexico.

She likes Jettas and wants something quick? Skip the VR6... too much weight, gas consumption, and high insurance. 1.8t? nice engine, but I'm sure the insurance isn't great on a German turbo car. Get the girl a Jetta TDI, if you can find one. Who needs hp(only about 90, as memory serves) with an astounding amount of torque(155 lb/ft@2500) . It's still a turbo car, but one that responds well to mods, and gets VERY high MPG on cheap(ish) diesel.
