At that point, I swore to never use ramps again to lift the front end of a front-wheel drive car. I know our Subies are AWD, but there's still power going to the front, so I feel better about jacking the front end and then lowering the car gently onto jack stands.

I try very hard to not repeat my mistakes.

This is the jack and jack stands I use:

Harbor Freight sells rubber pads for the jack stands; I use those too. And I put a hockey puck onto the cradle of the floor jack, for extra protection.

Oh, and I have 4 of those jack stands, so I can lift all 4 tires off the ground at the same time. Useful when rotating tires, bleeding brake lines, changing the tranny and rear diff fluids, etc.

At $15/pair with coupon, why not buy two pairs?

.
Damn, sorry to hear that. Manual tranny's are a little tricky with ramps. I've almost run off the top a few times but never had one spin out.
The metal ramps I have are too steep and I couldn't use them with my last car or this one either. I just need another set, not to replace like I said earlier.

i have some lower profile Rhino ramps I just got when I got this car, they work great. I wish i had them before in my life. there is a 2" tall stopper at the end of the ramp so it is really difficult to go too far.

i just need a low profile jack so i can reach under the car to the jack points when 1 end is already up in the air. my Craftsman 3ton jack is too tall to operate the handle

fwiw, I usually pay the extra few bucks and buy my oil and filters from the dealer. Then I make notation of mileage and date I changed oil.

That way my service records look all official and *sheet.

See my post above for a good jack and jack stand recommendation.

i found that if you jack up near the rear of the front jack area it will raise the whole side. pretty rad.

Do you do that so that you can rotate your tires on the same side of the car (for example, left front to left rear, and left rear to left front)?

Actually haven't rotated yet, 3,500 miles currently. I was lifting her up to put on 4 jack stands to install the shifter bushings and while I jacked up the front, up went the whole side. Convenient!

I guess where I was going was:

What tire rotation pattern will people be using? I haven't looked at my Yoko Avids closely enough to see if they're bi-directional or uni-directional, which would determine what pattern I will use when rotating my tires.

They're bi-directional

And because of that rotation pattern, it's super convenient to have all four tires off the ground at the same time. This was my intention when buying my floor jack and four jack stands.

Hello folks, had some question about audio quality and NAV for the sports.

Is there are difference in head unit audio quality for the Sport Premium, Limited non-NAV, and Limited NAV? I really want satellite radio and the best audio quality, but not sure if I want to shell out the $2k for the NAV head unit.

How good is the NAV itself? Any reviews out there?

How necessary are winter tires on these cars? They dont have a ton of power, and I never bought winter tires for my other car.

Is awd more dangerous in winter with summer tires then fwd is?

NJ may get snow twice a year, last year none. So i dont wanna shell out $800 unless im at serious risk.

Thx. Im sure Im gonna get drilled for asking.

For occasional snow the OEM tires work fine (at least when they are new, my personal experience from driving with them in a few snowstorms last winter in upstate NY).

AWD is vastly superior to FWD in the snow, partly because it improves your ability to accelerate and not get stuck in front of oncoming traffic. It does not help you slow down or steer (though regaining lost traction does actually help you steer around things), so drive more cautiously and leave a buffer between you and those in front of you.

The OEM tires are not summer tires, they are all seasons. If you did not switch them to summer tires, which it sounds like you did not do, the OEM are fine.

STi wheels are generally performance tires, not all-seasons. My stock tires did just fine at the beginning of the year through a few inches of snow.

All of these answers re: snow tires are fine. However, I stumbled across a set of used 16" WRX wheels with young (5k miles) Blizzak snow tires on them. Bought the set for $280. For that price, I'll take the added traction, and will let the Blizzaks take the abuse from salt and potholes, rather than subjecting my nice, lower-profile 17" wheels to that abuse.

No TPMS sensors, but I can live with that.

Is there any reason to rotating the tires that way? Just curious, I'll have to rotate mine in about a month or so

This rotation pattern puts each tire at all four corners of the car, eventually. That way, if one corner of the car wears tires more rapidly than the others, the wear is spread across all four tires, rather than only two of the tires.

I am planning on doing a muffler delete this weekend and wanted to know if there was some tips on how to remove the muffler. I looked under and noticed that they were held on with some brackets on this oval black thing on the right and left side. Is there any special tool or it just removed with brute force?

Well said. In addition, most all vehicles especially cars, are set up from the factory with some negative camber in the front, and in many cases the rear as well. If you only do a front to back rotation you will always have premature inner edge wear.

VW recommends a front to back only rotation but I always did as described above.

Me too, on my TDI's summer tires (Conti ProContacts). My VW snow tires (General Altimax Arctics) were uni-directional, so I had to keep those on the same side of the car.

I believe the used Blizzaks I bought for the Impreza are uni-directional too. I think uni-directionality has become pretty common for snow tires, as the tread design only allows the tire to fling packed snow out of the treads if the tire is rotating in the specified direction.
