Default Custom Rotated Borg Warner

Here's my build. *Dyno post 50*
-2006 WRX 42k
-Stock Motor, Stock Trans.
-Custom Rotated Borg Warner s256 w/.70 v-band.
-1 step colder plugs.
-GM boost solenoid.
-Prodrive springs.
-255lph Pump.
-Southbend Stage 3 Clutch.
-Deatschwerks 850cc injectors.

***New numbers as of 4/28/09 369.7 hp, 362.1tq at 21lbs (MAF maxed housing to small)***

Decided to go with something that not many suby owners run. Me a my buddy VR6chris did all of the fab work. I went with a custom fabbed rotated mount s256. Sent turbo/uppipe to grimmspeed for coating. Car was tuned by Hill at Agile Auto. Final numbers were 314hp/318tq at 14lbs. Keep in mind the injectors are maxed, need a bigger fuel pump, still on stock clutch. Car feels amazing the top end on it is great. Just wanted to share. Will be going back in spring with new pump, injectors, possibly trans? Have not had any problems and have had around 300hp since 8k. Tell me what you think. Thanks

VF39 vs. S256

Beautiful turbo, and in such a sleeper!

Methinks you need a meth kit on there.

A buddy with an eclipse said that he and his DSM cronies are all switching to Borg Warners. I'll be interested to see if more people try something like this...

First off, great build, looks incredible, but i'm gonna disagree with that statement.

BEP rates this turbo (their compressor map) at right around 57-58lb/min, which is larger than even the 3076. Geoff @ full-race says this is the compressor that is used in the hta30r that fp is offering.

Maybe you spec'd a different compressor wheel, i guess i don't know that for sure, but if its an off the shelf s256, it's right between the 30R and the 35R, flow wise.

Again, love the intensely clean engine bay though. BTW, what intercooler is that?

His intercooler is a Hyperflow. They made TurboXS's first intercoolers also...

thanks, appreciate the good words. about the turbo, my buddy who works at a shop is a borg warner dealer. on the pricing sheet they list the s256 as compareable to the 3071r so thats where i got it from. its the hyperflow intercooler

My best friend literally just got the same turbo installed last week. He has a built 1.8 92 hatch. 506hp!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @ 25lbs on race gas. So its a pretty insane turbo. Beautiful looking. He did a lot of research and found that the S256 to be better in some ways than the 35. Im not 100% sure, but Honda guys are starting to love these too. DSM's as well.

And awesome job on the car. I love when people go with a new setup. It ruffles so many feathers around here...

care to explain why?

garrett makes journal bearing turbos (cheap to rebuild, which seems to be why people are so in love with the BW's) with almost identical compressor maps and they're cheaper.

the compressor wheel is actually closer to a 3076...

the 256 turbine wheel is bigger and the turbine A/R is right inbetween a 3071 and 3076...

do you know which s256 it was? there are a couple different turbines available and 5 different housings. we dont even really know what the op has.
its just like a gt35 w/ a 0.63 or on with a 1.06....the powerbands gonna be completely different.

The problem is that to run a Borg Warner on our cars, you'd have to completely fab it up like the OP did here. And since people already get pretty good results with Garrett turbos, there aren't going to be many people switching out to something new and different when they already know what works with Garretts.

^^ right.

if you already have a turbo around the same size....the cost/benefit really isnt there to justify the switch.

kinda like buschurs rotated "stock location" turbos...no sense in rotating an 18g to make more power when you can just get a 20g for less overall cost.
