Default 2009 WRX Popping out of 3rd gear

My car has been popping out of 3rd gear under acceleration right after i upshift to it from 2nd. It happens more so at lower rpms or sometimes under heavy acceleration. To describe it better; I'm in 2nd gear accelerating, around 4k rpm i upshift to 3rd and as soon as i am letting go of the clutch and getting back on throttle, within that second it pops back out into neutral leaving me revving. It has popped out with a bang a couple times and It's making me worried.

Couple of things here, I did notice that my shifter feels very loose. Probably due to the stock bushings. But this didnt used to happen a couple of months ago. It started very recently after the weather warmed up.

I am planning on taking the car to the dealer but if it's just a loose shifter fork linkage or something like that I wouldnt mind tackling it my self. I have an Accessport installed on the car. Will definitely be reflashing back to Factory Settings before bringing in the car.

Any clues on whats going on here?

just dropped it off at the dealership. Mechanic drove it around the block with me in riding passenger. He got it to pop out as well. Hopefully they get it figured out soon. I need my car back asap

I know one of the symptoms for 3rd gear popping out in the book is that the syncro cone on the third gear side in your case is worn or damaged. But your car is fairly new for that to occur. Or Scotty's idea with the bent fork but that would take some abuse.

update: dealer said shift fork for 3rd and 4th needs replacement.

I havent been slamming into gears at all nor do I rest my hand on the shifter.

Can this sort of damage to the shift forks be caused by drivetrain shock?

Are they covering the damage under warranty? The only cause I have ever heard is the gears being jammed, but I'm sure there are others.

They are only made from aluminum with plastic tips on the end. Costing around $50 each and there are only 3 in a 5mt.

breaking/bending shift forks is almost always from slamming/forcing it into gear

they dont just break or bend on their own

Well i realize you are so certain but I am also sure that I have yet to slam 3rd gear on this car. No chance of a bad casting? I do agree with you as I still havent found any other possible way for this to break.

My question about the drivetrain shock was, to give an example: If i'm driving on a semi slippery surface or practically dry, i break em loose on 2nd but the traction control is abruptly cutting power as needed. (i do feel like this happens very violently sometimes on dry pavement with the traction control on. So i have been turning it off to prevent that nasty shock.) And during this point I possibly tried to shift into 3rd? and then maybe broke em loose again and got traction back in 3rd?

My point is that I do feel a rather harsh control of power by the stability control trying to regulate it during wheel spin. Could this type of shock to the drivetrain break a selector fork?

Car is being fixed under warranty. They gave me a 2010 2.5i auto wagon as a loaner. I must say, it is quite possibly the worst auto transmission I have ever driven. Oh and the alignment is off. WITH ONLY 600 MILES ON IT

I miss my car.

It doesn't add credibility to your not slamming gears story with a username like "fulltime W.O.T"

those things look heavy duty and mean

If this happens again and I'm out of warranty coverage, I will definitely be putting in bullet forks during a tranny rebuild.

got the car back. It was all covered under warranty. Drives excellent. Clutch pedal feels a lot smoother than it used to. I wonder why they did to make that feel different. It almost feels like there is no link between the clutch and pedal. It just feels like a pedal with a spring. So smooth.

One minor issue
After having the car parked in my driveway overnight, there was a couple drops of tranny oil on the pavement. Literally like 3 drops. Im hoping that this just some excess that was around the tranny casing or something of that sort. I will check it again today and hope that its not leaking. If it is still leaking, the dealer is gonna get a handful of my words. Not nice ones either

Is it normal for the tranny gasket or seals that were replaced to leak until saturation/expansion? I read this somewhere for older cars but couldn't find any updated information. It has only been 1 days since the transmission was put back together.

I will post an update later on today...

Could be either of the axle seals, the rear seal where the driveshaft meets the tranny, the shift linkage arm seal, the drain plug might not be torqued properly (knowing dealerships it's probably 50% too tight) or the gasket isn't sealing, or it could be the input shaft seal if it seems the leak is come from between the tranny/engine.

I'm having this same issue with my car...of course i brought it in and it stopped doing it. So maybe its a mildly bent shift fork for me.

which gear is it happening in? I can explain to you how to make it happen on command so you can show the mechanic on the test drive.

Generally it gets flexable. A non-subaru mechanic may not understand what they are looking for with this kind of damaged.
