Default Disassembling seized suspension parts.

Howdy all, thought I'd ask for someone else's two cents on what they'd do in this situation. This isn't urgent, just something I'm dreading & need to plan for in the future.

During a rear drum to disc conversion in the past I found that the bolt which holds the rear control arms to bottom of the rear knuckle to be seized on one corner. (bolt end) I was still able to remove the knuckle & do the conversion but I know I'll need to face that bolt sooner or later.

Pounding on it w/ a deadblow hammer only distorted the nut end w/ the threads. WD-40 didn't seem to loosen it in the short span of time I wanted it done in. (eg: wanted it done yesterday) And I could'nt sqeeze a pry bar between the bolt head & the bushing. It seems that the steel insert & the bolt are seized.

So knowing that I'll have to free that end when I install uprated bushings into the control arms, how would you approach removing this?

I've only heard of torch & PB blaster so far. Any special tools that might help? None of my pullers seem to be relevant to this job.

I would have asked in the maintenance forums but I figure swappers over here were more likely to have run into this problem already.

Thanks,

PB blaster and air tools! Using those two things I never have a problem.

When you reasemble try anti-seize, works great.

Air tools would'nt make a difference in this case as the bolt has no threads to latch onto to press itself out. Both the nut & bolt are free & not captive. Turning the bolt simply spins the rubber suspension bushing in its outer sleeve. What is seized is the bushing insert & the pivoting portion of the suspension bolt. These are usually supposed to be lubed, but I guess this car saw too many winters. The bolt & the bushing are what I want to separate so that I may press out the bushing for replacement. The bolt could be pressed out w/ the bushing but you'd still have to remove the stuck part in order to install. Just wondering if there are any creative ideas. I have'nt come up w/ any yet.

BTW: I use power tools to disassemble it already. This snag is just something the the tools have'nt helped solve.

Part 24 and the bolt are stuck together.

I've seen this before on a WRX. Take the lateral link off with the bolt seized to it. Cut off the bolt. Press out the bushing and what's left of the bolt. Replace bushing, buy a new bolt. You can also try to just press out the bolt, but good luck with that. I did manage to press out a seized one on a trailing arm with about 25 tons of pressure.

Option 2 is to buy a new bolt and just get a new lateral link, they are cheap.

Cut the bolt head off and pound it out. Replace the lateral links with some nice Whiteline adjustable ones.

Thanks guys,

That sucks, I had hoped to salvaged some of the parts too. I have some spares but not enough to do this w/o scrounging a bit.

Thanks again.
