Default Stripped the hex fitting on top of strut ???

what to do?

i threw a pipe wrench on the top of the strut to keep it from spinning, didnt want to grab though.

i am trying to break the nut free to swap springs.

you pretty much have to use an impact gun now...

and i actually separated a set of struts with the intent of shipping them to you however i quickly realized that i had just taken apart the rear and you need fronts right...?

then it started to snow so i retreated indoors...

i was looking for rear sti 02 03 springs.

so now i need a 16mm impact socket.

any other ideas before i go this route?

i was thinking of lightly disc sanding underneath the bump stop so my pipe wrench could grab?

If you stripped the allen head I doubt a pipe wrench would have enough grip to prevent it from spinning.

Use an impact gun. It will come off in like 2 seconds.

+1 for the impact gun.
I wouldn't do most suspension removal without one.

alright, got er done. the one strut that i stripped is trippin me out. it had a slightly smaller size hex hole than the other 3. i think it would be a 5.5 or 6.5mm hole. so after a good 10 minutes of almost pure impact gun the nut was finally almost off. it took so long because the strut spun freely.

it is still a bitch to get the nut back on because it just doesnt want to spin on easily, the threads look fine on the nut and strut and i have no idea how im going to torque it to spec. at least it is a front one so it is easily accessible once installed.

btw i bought these used and are already off the car for me to work on.

my route for the other three worked out great. i simply layed the strut on the floor and cracked the nut loose with a 17mill. after that i used my hex key attached to vise grips and a socket with a pipe wrench to easily work the nuts off the rest of the way.

now i just have to swap my rear tops on to the new rear struts and it's time for the swap.

thanks guys for ur help

When you're impacting that nut off and on, do it in short pulls. Spinning up the shaft enough can kill the seal at the top.

I used soapy water to clean a rubber dishwashing glove and the shaft. Then grab the shaft with your fingers and have somebody else apply impact.
