Default 2016 WRX aftermarket HU install

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious if anybody has done/seen a 2016 WRX aftermarket HU install yet.

I've read multiple threads about the 2015 since its been out for over a year now, but with the new upgrade to the Starlink HU for the 2016, I"m curious if there were any changes to the wiring.

Is it a safe assumption that the Starlink HU in the 2016 WRX is the same as the current Starlink HU in the Outback and Forester?

Reason I ask is because I plan installing a Pionner AVIC-8100NEX when my 2016 WRX arrives. My 2016 WRX won't have the OEM 7" Starlink Navigation, just the basic 6.2" Starlink HU.

Thanks for your help!

I had the chance to get a 2016 on order for a good price but decided to go for the 2015 for this reason. I looked at the differences in the base models (my price range) and I couldn't justify a $600 price increase just for the starlink system. I went with the 2015 for the standard 2-din stereo that can be easily popped out so get my android auto on!

I would imagine it would be the same as the 2015 Impreza. You will probably have to get the dash trim from a 15 WRX as well.

Considering I doubt believe they have hit the dealer yet, no one has done an upgrade. AE64.com may have come across the schematics. I would just wait till you take delivery of the car, and then e-mail ae64 for harness info.

It is the same setup as the 2015 Impreza and Crosstrek. Brian at [email protected] has done a few custom harness adapters for people.

Same here. I decided I wanted one of the new models so I went to trade in my '11 STI for a '16 WRX. However, the dealer had one white manual 2015 WRX left and were offering it to me for a hell of a price. I was still tempted to hold out for the 2016 but the updated radio was a red flag for me.

I really want to put a nice Android Auto HU in my car and the 2016 setup may just make that difficult. This and the $2k price difference for the exact same trim/upgrades made the 2015 a no brainer for me.

Dealers have them now. I was snapping pictures of a 2016 WRX in the showroom while I was waiting for the dealer to install my clear bra.

In person, the new gloss black bezel looks terrible, if you ask me. It just clashes with every part of the interior. Even the fake carbon fiber looks better. And if you want to upgrade the HU, you will have to buy a 2015 bezel because the 2016 bezel is baked into the stock HU.

But the new (2012 STI) wheels look great on the car.

Good to know, I read somewhere they were still a couple of weeks out. Those wheels do look pretty good on there. I like the charcoal color on the blue. One of the reason I got the sport premium.

The bezel is not a huge deal. The guys doing the 2015s Imprezas have found them for around $100 brand new. There are also a few threads on guys wanting to swap in the new starlink, so used ones should be showing up slowing from those conversions.

I plan on doing the same thing but I am wondering how the steering wheel control will work.

A little bit, but the Subarus aren't as bad as some others out there.

I'm just grateful that Subaru used a double DIN mounting. Lots of other cars are completely proprietary.

i had a 2005 LGT - it was tied in to the climate controls.

used a JDM adapter to locate an aftermarket HU where the top storage cubby was, and retained the factory 6 disc changer as an AUX-in to the new head unit. that was a PITA.

I know this thread is old however I have a 2016 wrx with star link. I am trying to figure out how in the heck to get the head unit out. The ac vents snap out the same as the 2015. There are two 10mm bolts to remove under that panel once removed. The oem touchscreen still won't come out! I don't want to snap it.

Anyone been able to remove the oem head unit

Have you looked at this video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCae...w&spfreload=10

There seems to be multiple screws to remove after you get the front panel off.

I have watched this video. On 2016 wrx the bezel is not one piece anymore. The ac vents are one piece and then the oem stereo and climate controls are one piece. I can get the ac vents out but I can't get the head unit /climate controls out!

From a 2015 Impreza Accessory Install Guide over on STIS:

http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/957...30SFJ301v2.pdf

Page 5: it says to remove the two bolts on the side and on the top. Then pry the bezel clips holding it in place.

Looks like you may have to remove the glove box and a panel or two. Definitely a bit more complicated than the 2015s.

Hope this helps

I got you guys on this one.... after a long day yesterday of trying to get the headunit on my 16 out, I finally did. I will get you guys pics tonight when I get back there again, basically there are two screws locking the stereo into place. The first one you need to take the glove box out and look in through the hole to get to it. Its a 12mm bolt. The other one, there is a small panel right underneath and to the right of the steering column. Take it off and you should see the other 12 mm bolt. once those two are out, the stereo comes out just like the 2015s do. Take the vents/hazard bezel section out, top two bolts and bam. you're in.

I am doing a write up on removing the stereo so I will have more to come on this. Pictures and what not. I need help figuring out the colors for each speaker to wire in a LOC. Might end up taking off the door panels and looking to be honest unless somoene can help me find a wiring diagram.

btw the stereo model is a Clarion PF-3692, so if we can figure out if the model matches the impreza, maybe we can use the same wiring harness? Just thinking out loud.

Thanks for your efforts pioneering the way on this. I really want to do something about the sound of this system. Mine is just the 6.2" non-nav starlink system. I don't mind the HU but the sound isn't great, maybe an amp and sub would help out enough without having to go aftermarket HU.

My biggest complaints about the stock base system are a) the door speakers, especially the rear don't seem to produce much sound. Fading to the rear seems to help balance it a bit.. is there a crossover in the door speakers?

b) the volume of the system is just not very loud; with even just the drivers window down I have to have it cranked just to hear it decently.

I might just go with an aftermarket HU when/if a dash kit comes out, but until then does anyone know of anything that might help out the stock system like settings or features?

Yea, i'm adding a sub myself. One thing I figured out that makes it better is disabling the stupid "Virtual bass" All in all the stereo looks and feels nice but sounds terrible. IMO

What kind/size sub and amp are you going with? Im undecided about this because I don't want to end up with a system that has tons of bass drowning out the rest of the system. I was thinking just a single 8 or 10" sub in a sealed box and a nice monoblock amp to power it.
