2 bad crank seals in 2 weeks?
1998 2.2 16v impreza
100k miles just bought the car. car smoked like mad Local mechanic changed the crank seal and both valve cover gaskets Crank seal started leaking again after 25 miles of hway driving Changed it again This time it lasted 2 days. It leaks much less but it shouldn't leak at all! What is this mechanic doing wrong? Thanks |

Is the seal bore damaged? Did the mechanic drive the seal in correctly the first time, or did he pry it out, thus, damaging the spring, and then tried reinstalling it again? Are these Subaru crank seals or aftermarket?

There could be excessive pressure in the crankcase, from blowby caused by worn rings and/or a stuck PCV valve.

Run-
Can you actually see drops of oil at the front of the engine or are you going by smell (burning oil)? After repairing my front crank seal (97 EJ22, 115K) I could smell burning oil for a few days after the leak was repaired. There was a fair amount of oily buildup on and around the exhaust Y pipe, which took a few days to stop stinkin'. -OBS Fan |

-Definitely have oil drops on the bottom of the timing belt cover
-I wasn't there to inspect the bore, but i will be next time -Supposed to be Subaru seals, but will make sure -I hope the rings arent worn with only 100k, but i will do a leak down test if all else fails -PCV valve:is there an easy way to check if its working right? THanks for all the quick feedback ! |

For the PCV, just pull the vacuum hose off of it, then stick your finger over it and give the throttle blip. It will suck on your finger. On mine, I didn't even need to blip the throttle, it just sucked all by itself.

Quote:
1. Air filter (easy to check, if needed) $10-15 2. Fuel filter $20 3. Spark plugs $8 4. Rear diff. oil $3 (Valvoline Durablend 80w90) 5. Front diff. oil $13(Valvoline Durablend 80w90) 6. Tranny oil or fluid depending on manual or Auto. 7. PCV $9 I don't mean to be spending money for you, but with 100k on the odometer why not change the timing belt and water pump too since your already in there. For under $80 you do all the things mentioned above and not have to worry about it. Of course, I don't know how deep your wallet is or what your mechanical abilities are, but these would be safe measures. -Charles- |

Thanks I'll definitely do all those things, the timing belt has just been replaced. I didn't think to do the water pump at the same time.
Since the last time the seal was replaced it only leaks noticeably when i drive like a maniac. I'll post an update If i ever figure out why. |

Run, this same thing happen to my RS. 133K miles
Oil pump, you need to replace the oil pump. The tolerences between the impeller and the house of the pump get too big so you start to get too much internal pressure in the pump. The oil pump is driven by the crank. The seal you replaced in on the pump. The blow back hole behind the seal is only so big and when flow account is exceeded that the blow can handle. It will popthe seal. I'll get pic on my old pump. |

here is the pic of my old oil pump.
FYI, the vertical tubes on the left is the pressure side and the right side is the vaccum side. If you wanted to. You can take the plug on the left and replace it with a plug for a pressure sender gallery plug. http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg If you wanted too, too prevent this in the future. You can bore out the blow back hole with a drill bit and make the hole bigger. |
