I am working on a bit of an experiment where I stick with M mode (CVT) and 5th gear through ~10 mile section of rolling hills on my daily commute. This prevents the engine braking from kicking in and allows the car to slow a bit when going up hills. I have the car on cruise control between 46 and 51 for the whole section. I tried doing sections of this in 6, however the car keeps kicking down to 5 for a lot of the hills so I am just going to leave it in 5 to make it simple.

My drive is highly reproducible (almost zero traffic) so hopefully the next fill up will yield some results.

Why not leave it in 6th with cruise control?

I have found that when I am going ~48 MPH, the car is in the 6th gear range. At that time you can flip it over into manual mode and it will stay in 6th gear, provided your speed doesn't drop below 40 MPH. That being said, you can drive up small hills with more throttle and not have the car downshift. You can see the ECO gauge not take a big hit with this method of driving. The only caveat is that you won't accelerate up inclines very fast, in fact if the hill is steep enough it will slow down despite you flooring it in 6th gear.

Tonight with a 15mph tailwind i was only getting 28mpg at 75, which i know is low. Car was also sluggish in the handling department. When i got home after my 41 mile commute u checked my tires and they were all below 30, the front were down 6, while the back were down 5. Overinflating didn't seem to help much but underinflated site makes a big impact!
Same conditions last night with the tires at 34/32 like i like them and i was back to seeing 31-32mpg. I really didn't see and mpg loss after i dropped from 38/36, but wow when they dropped below 30psi there was a 12% loss

Yup same. I use the recommended pressure and we got a cold snap a little while ago. My mileage sacked. Checked and it was at 28psi. Filled her back to normal and all is good.

.

Huh?! My CVT will stay in 6th until MPH drops below 43. It will NOT downshift on it's own even at WOT when in manual mode.

I've notices *worse* mileage in manual mode w/CVT, because I use more throttle to accel, even though RPM's are lower. In auto mode, the engine revs so high at small throttle that I back off the throttle and don't get much accel.

Doesn't take an engineer to figure this one out, bud.

Hey, basement genius...

People have been discussing the possibility of manumode being more efficient for the last year. If you actually had a CVT, and an inquiring mind, you'd know that the CVT revs the engine very high under mild accel. Leading to the very understandable assumption that keeping revs down by nearly half would be at least somewhat more efficient.

The reality is that it doesn't.

But I guess it would take a (real) engineer to understand that.

It is imperative that you guys keep speeds to a max of 70mph if you're looking for economy. The difference in fuel economy between 70 and 80mph can be as much as 6-8mpg on some cars.

Heck, it's imperative that you keep the speeds between 55-60 if you want the best mileage.

Not necessarily true. Many cars have multimodal graphs for speed vs. mpg. Depending on the car, you could be getting better fuel economy at 65mph than you would at 50mph depending on engine and gearing.

I understand, and i fully understand why my mpg sucks so bad in those conditions.

That tank ended up at 26.9 so all things considered i can't complain too much

No hard feelings at all! It is just funny that because I have to drive this car so slow on the highways that my wife tells me to drive faster!! Lol

As I noted, I set the cruise control between 46 and 51. Going up a hill, the car will lose a few MPH (like to 43MPH or below) and then drop down to 5th. The car doesn't have enough power to go up hills at those speed and not lose momentum in 6th.

So if you want to see your car downshift itself, set the cruise control at 45 MPH, gear 6, and find a hill.

It's kinda sad how the car can't climb a moderate hill in 6th. I feel like the little engine that could as the car slowly starts to loose MPHs.

My gas guzzling STI on the other hand...

Define "moderate hill" as CO will have a different definition than say MI.

For CO, it's probably a slight incline!
