Subaru Stars Power Steering Leak

I was cleaning my engine bay last night and I noticed some power steering fluid around the p/s pump. I'm very anal with my car, does any one know any good trusted subie mechanics in NJ (Totowa, W.Paterson, Wayne etc.) area???

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if it is a minor leak, you can probably just top off the fluid every so often.

It not necessarily the leak the OP should be worried about. If there is a leak AT the Power steering pump, it tells me that either the O-ring has failed, which could introduce air into the power steering system, or the high pressure line that feeds the rest of the system has failed (which I doubt because the pump can deliver up to 1000psi to the rest of the system and that means there wouldnt be a little, there would be a giant mess of ATF sprayed everywhere).

OP you can save yourself about $125 for labor if you remove the suction line off of the pump find something to suck the fluid level down a little bit (just to prevent a mess), and take the o-ring off and find a ride to a hardware store, and just match the O-ring up. Reinstall the o-ring and line and jack the front wheels off of the ground (use jackstands for safety) and slowly turn the wheels (yes from the outside of the car by grabbing the wheel) from lock to lock about 25-30 times, with the cap of the reservoir. Then check the reservoir for aeration (bubbles in the oil), if you see bubbles walk away for 30 minutes and do it again. Repeat this step until you get all of the air out of the system (no bubbles in the reservoir after turning the wheels lock to lock 25-30 times). Then top the fluid level off and you should be good to go.

P.S. The compression fittings on the lines could be culprit. You will know what you need to replace by investigating around the hose and fittings. If it looks wet at the connection from hose to fitting then you need to replace the clamps with screw type clamps and do above said process to rid the system of air.

STOP!!!!

If you have ever added any power steering fluid.....and didnt add DexronIII type ATF...THAT is likely the issue

regular 'power steering' fluid is a bit thinner than ATF and may leak where ATF wont

^^^Just snug it up gently.

OP: The o-rings at the dealership with the OEM part number will most likely be the wrong ones. Ask them to show you the ring in the bag, if it is not completely round (some have a flat side) then it is the wroung one. You need the one the is completely round. Also, there are a bunch of spring type clamps on the hoses. You should replace them too if your going to open the system to replace the o-ring. Get decient quality worm clamps that wont damage the hoses. The OEM spring type loose their tighness over time. There are alot of threads on PS leaks and problems too. Good search on the site should pull you up a good amount of results.

Add: +1 for Scotty

DONT USE POWER STEERING FLUID!!! Use the correct automatic transmission fluid as described by Subaru. Once again, search that and you should get a bunch of results.

Thanks...I'll try that, clean it up and see if that changes anything.

For fluid, from looking at the FSM, it says to use Dexron III. Is there a specific Dexron III fluid we should use? I noticed that when searching online, there seems to be both dexron III power steering and automatic transmission fluids.

i prefer to use the OEM Subaru ATF/PSF. it was about $8 at the local dealer.

Subaru Stars 04 impreza BAD misfire

i have a 2004 subaru impreza 2.5rs i havent put anything into the engine, i got the car about a year ago and the past month i havent drove it cause its so bad, i know that there are misfires on cyl. 1,2, and 4. i have replaced spark plugs, wires, coil, MAF, and fuel pump didnt change anything, reading other threads said try unplugging the MAF i did and it idled fine but still had little to no power after a few seconds of trying to get it turned around in the driveway. if anyone has had this problems or knows what the heck they are doing please post back, thanks

Did changing the o ring fix the leak?

You can replace all 3 suspected o rings for about $2 provided you have a place to obtain the correct metric o rings. Use this walk through and it will take about 2 hours. Cheap and easy fix.
