alright, last winter I had a lot of ice here in the midwest... it built up under the wipers and I believe pushed them off track, or broke something.
They still work, but when you turn them on, they either dont go all the way to the side of the windshield like their normal path, or they go past the edge of the windsheild, and hit the pillar... and sometimes they dont go back down all the way and come to rest towards the bottom of the windshield, but still in view. What could this be? linkage? and if it is the linkage... do you think an 04-07 linkage would work in my 02? since they are technically the same? Thanks guys

This started happening to my wife's 02 WRX.. was scraping up the pillar on the drivers side. I popped the hood, popped out the black circular plastic covers near the base of the wiper and tightened the nut holding down the wipers.. they work good now. stay right where they are supposed to.

I keep saying this and the radiator explosion and the front wheel bearing all need to be stickied.

Either the base of the wiper arm is stripped or the bolts are loose. Easy fix but very aggravating when they hit the a pillar.

After reading further, this is false. The bushings are most likely the problem and a set of jeep bushing and some elbow grease is in order

Got ya. The bushing underneath where the arm meets the cowl? Hopefully so, that would definitely end up a bit cheaper than new wiper arms.

I had this problem at the beginning of the summer. I tried simply tightening the bolt that hold the wiper arms to the wiper transmission but that didn't work. When your wipers are at rest do they have a lot of play in them, can you wiggle them up and down the windshield easily? If so you might have a busted bushing in the wiper linkage. Thats what my problem was. Here are some pictures from when I fixed it.
You can see the top joint is completely separated from the bushing ![]() I bought a whole new linkage from the dealer... Old vs New ![]() |

^So you just bought new linkage and that was it? That comes with new bushings, etc? How much $ if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah i just bought a new linkage from the dealer, cost about $160. Apparently they don't sell the bushings by themselves. If you are really tight on cash i saw a guide online, can't remember the site, where some guy hacked up some generic bushings and got them to fit/work. I didn't feel like going through that hassle and figured the money i saved by doing the work myself was good enough.

Do the good bushings in the old assembly come out in one piece? I see a way to recover some of your cash outlay.

A guy I knew had the bushings crap out on his wipers. We took the old one out and with lots of elbow grease, pliers, a hammer, and an assortment of profanities we were able to install a bushing in. From what I remember it was meant for Nissan but was the right size. Cost $3 at NAPA. The trick is to take your time and do it firm but gently.

nevermind, got it. Push up clips on the bottom of the rubber molding and pull the cowl off. Now i gotta align the wiper sequence.
