I think all new automatics do that now when in cruise control. All the new ones I know of anyway, at least.

So you confirmed the EPA testing is pretty much accurate nailing the 36MPG figure at 60mpg. Sounds like Subaru ran the correct EPA tests to arrive at the same result.

And you confirmed that driving faster gives you lower mileage (the lower MPG's you want to file a warranty claim over).

I'm no engineer, but I can see your math and the EPA's math agree. Do you still think Subaru is gaming the EPA testing?

At 80, Auto was 5% better than 6th.

In 5th, Auto was about 10% better than 5th across the board.

These were two way runs on a flat and level road, no traffic, cruise control. Absolute best case.

36 mpg at 60,
31 mpg at 70,
26 mpg at 80.
Are these averages or instantaneous? My instantaneous at 69 on the highway goes anywhere from 54.5 to 21 depending on the road grade.

They are averages over a flying mile on a flat level roadway. Up to speed about 0.1 mile before the milepost, reset at the milepost, read it at the next milepost. Both ways. You have to do both ways.

I just heard about an alternate (cheaper) than the scangauge:

http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm

I know nothing about it though.

You must not be paying attention. Search this thread for Consumer Reports. Most people understand that you can get much better mpg at much slower speeds. You don't? Apparently you're not very good at math either. Do you think I am happy because the car gets 45 mpg at 50 mph?

Run the numbers. The dollars saved going 60 instead of 70 save you money alright - but at $3.50 per gallon you are making less than minimum wage for the extra time you are driving.

What we have here is a math genius with an accurage gauge who reports achieving the 36MPG EPA HWY mileage that is shown on his window sticker, as long as he is not driving faster than 60mph.

Now it is a warranty issue, because...

Reason one: 'Consumer Reports'. However CA are not reporting that they have an issue with the Combined MPG that they are seeing, and call the car a best buy in its class (also one of the most reliable cars made, but that has nothing to do with the MPG claims).

Reason two: Who drives 60mph, the EPA should be testing all cars at 80mph. And something about his grandmother.

Reason three: He is an engineer with a scangauge that is more accurate than the dash gauge.

Reason four: toyota corolla.

Reason five: The window sticker shows 36MPG HWY and he only sees that number if he drives 60mph (which is actually a little faster than the EPA tests at, but that is beside the point). Is this the same as reason 2?

There, give him his money back!

Reasons 2 and 5 are wrong.

2: 70 - 75 average

5: The EPA does not test "at a speed". They run through a cycle that either just happens to be optimized by the Impreza's drivetrain, or Subaru's testers "didn't quite do the test right".

See and I thought you were going to write that Consumer Reports named the 2012 Subaru Impreza as a "Top Pick for Small Cars" and not a best buy as I claimed...

The EPA does do a Highway test using a warmed up engine and cycle through different speeds, however the AVERAGE speed of their test is much lower than 60 mph.

The EPA tests do not try to determine HWY MPG's if driving at 70mph+

We both know that, I provided the link to their testing protocol already.

Aren't you a little sad that your own testing shows the claimed EPA MPG HWY number of 36 is spot on?

The EPA test goes through cycles of accelerations and decelerations. News to you maybe, but you will get less mpg doing that than by driving a constant speed on a flat and level roadway in cruise control.

You got me, good luck with your warranty claims.

Just don't tell them that part about how you only get 36mpg on the highway if you drive 60mph or slower, it will gum up your attempt to get money out of them for misrepresentation.

By the way, you realize the MPG number on your window sticker is an estimate, and not a guarantee, right?

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml

Overall average speed in the HWY test is only 48mph? Not exceeding 60 mph? Grandmother.

I would not have purchased it. I already have a 4wheel drive vehicle and the reason for the purchase was to match the economy of my Corolla but have an all wheel drive option. The Corolla is rated the same (36 highway) but gets (just checked yesterday) an average highway mpg that is over 10 mpg better. (13 better at 50 and 8 better at 80). The Corolla gets its rated mpg at 80 mpg.

Freeway speed limits for hundreds of miles around here are 75, more and more limits are going to 80, and there is even a stretch in Texas that is 85. Unless you drive like my Grandma (figuratively) you'll never see the advertised 36.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=168

how is my post irrelevant. this is by YOU, stating you drive 80mph in your corolla

here is the fuel economy.gov for the impreza and your 2004 ****box
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find....19676&id=31721
look at the real world, there is some really low and some on the high side, all in all, nothing like what you are reporting you supposedly get in this ultimate physics defying vehicle.

unless you can get EPA blend fuel (it is now winter blend everywhere so not only is it normally impossible, now it is really impossible) and drive exactly like the EPA, all they are is..........wait for it........

ESTIMATES

they are not and never will be..........wait for it.......

GUARANTEES

no one promised you anything, nothing is guaranteed, you fall right in the ranges you were told to expect. Advertising is supposed to bring you in, it is to sell you something, but it is not a guarantee.

You are confused. Just because I drive 80 mph sometimes (a new section of freeway is open in Texas from San Antonio to Austin where the speed limit is 85) doesn't mean I expect, necessarily, to get 36 mpg at that speed. I certainly would expect it to be closer to the average by other manufacturers. After all, that's what the EPA sticker is for.

I'm just saying the Corolla still does, and I bet others rated by Consumer Reports do as well. You apparently do not understand the dismal performance of the Impreza in gas mileage compared to other vehicles that I have documented here. That's why you are irrelevent. You and zeeper blather on.

What you need is a good lawyer.

Why shouldn't you get the guaranteed EPA 36 MPG mileage during your 70+mph driving.

Orly Taitz is probably available now that the election has ended.

You still don't get it. Why does the Impreza have much higher EPA test mpg estimates than other cars that get the same mpg in Consumer Reports independent tests? That is the point.

You know the EPA does include some high speed driving in their testing, just not exclusively high speed driving.

You also know that driving faster saves you money, because although the gas expense is higher, your time is worth more than that.

If your time is so valuable, why do you spend so much of it here telling us that Subaru lied about their EPA testing, when you and I both know that you could get 36mpg if you drive slower.

Which you are never going to do.

Consumer Reports...they are not on your side. They drove the car, it got what they reported, and they still say it is an excellent choice. Have you written them?

How did this become a warranty issue again?

How do you know the Consumer Reports testing data is accurate? Maybe they were on Meth instead of Math that day.

Not that it matters, your claim is against Subaru and the EPA certified numbers printed on the window sticker.

You have no claim that you can pursue against Consumer Reports, as far as I can tell.

You produced your own test data showing that you can achieve 36mpg on the highway, as long as you don't exceed 60mph.

Good luck explaining that in your class action lawsuit.

Do you take personal responsibility for your choices?

If you choose to drive faster than the speeds the EPA determines HWY MPG's at, do you feel like you are owed something?

Does this type of government mumbo jumbo make you want to dismantle the EPA:

For being an engineer, you sure are one illogical sob, who also apparently does not understand physics.

You can get 36mpg at the same speed everyone else seems to be able to achieve 36mpg. Physics and reality are not on your side above that speed. You have an awd vehicle with a bigger engine, and 30-40% more weight than your old ****box, what do you really think will happen?

You won't answer the question either, eh?

You are as funny as zeeper. You don't get that changing speeds and stopping and going give less mpg's than a constant speed.

What is your background in physics?

Neither do you understand that "an awd vehicle with a bigger engine, and 30-40% more weight" is all considered in the EPA procedure.

Blather.
