Engine temperature question
Where should the temp gauge indicate after driving about 40 km under a sunny day in July? Today I just noticed that mine is at about right in the middle.
I think it's like that all the time, but when I opened the door to get out, I felt this hot air came out from the bottom of the car... what's this about?

My temp gauge seems to always be just below the mid-way point regardless of the outside temp. I was once stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour in 105 degree weather with the A/C on and the needle didn't budge.

Same here. THat's the way it should be if everything is working ok. I believe that the Forester comes stock with a 200 or 205 degree thermostat. That will keep the coolant temperature as close to 200 (205?) degrees as it can. With no leaks or clogged radiator, that means it stays at 200 (205?) all day long, regardless of how hot or cold it is outside. It may fluctuate a few degrees up or down as the thermostat opens and closes, but you really won't notice on the gauge provided on the dash...
Now, if you want a few extra ponies, I read on a UK page somewhere that by changing the thermostat to a cooler one, the engine runs cooler and therefore gives a couple of extra horsepower. But not to go below 180 degrees or so, then you start actually losing power, because the combustion chambers get too cool to actually burn all of the fuel properly. This info probably works alot better in the turbocharged cars, but it may be worth a try. I plan to do it, but haven't got around to lcating the proper thermostat yet... |
