Have a Nice Day? "Yea, you can just pour that paint down the drain...no big deal, it's water-based..."

- that coming from a professional painter that does work for my condo complex. He was recently fixing the ceiling in my place, and I asked him what the best way to get rid of some old paint that I had.

That can't possibly be true, could it??

it does seem like it might be both bad for the environment ad it might clog things up. Give it a try in your neighbors sink and report back with findings

Yea, but cleaning out some brushes, or some paint that is coating the inside of a can is one thing - pouring out 3/4 of a gallon is a heck of a lot more paint though.

The guy did seem rather knowledgeable and all - was talking about how much better new water-based is, versus old-school water-based, and how it's just as durable - and way easier to work with - than old oil-based. But I was still rather surprised he said that.

He mentioned how many towns have a dump area specifically to accept paint, but then he added the zinger that I used as the thread title.

Your suppose to open the cans and let them dry out, which can take months. Then throw out the dried out cans.

I believe he's correct. The sewage treatment system will deal with whatever is in it.

It's better to wash buckets, brushes, etc indoors ie down the drain.

I've heard that you're supposed to fill the cans up with kitty litter, let it soak up the paint, throw out the litter, and do what you wish with the cans.

.

what do you mean will deal with it?

its not like guys are down there 24/7 taking samples every 5 seconds, ready to treat whatever odd chemical happens to come through.

Its just a constant stream where they remove oils and solids, let organisms eat whatever they can, and then dump in some chlorine and whatever chemical neutralizes that chlorine.

I dropped off some old cans of paint at the city hazardous materials collection site. No charge.

Meaning there are not really any particularly bad chemicals in water-based paint.

My city requires its crews to report even chlorinated water spills. Any paints or solvents can be taken to the local FD's hazardous materials lockup or the local dump (which has a similar site).

That's what my town recommends:

If you don't want to wait for kitty litter to dry it out, and don't want to pour it down the drain (I wouldn't do it), then you can buy waste paint hardener at home depot. You just take the package and pour it into the paint, give it a stir and then just toss it in the trash once it's all absorbed. It only costs about $3/4 and works in about an hour. I've used it before and it works great.

how is letting it dry in the can any different from dumping it into your garbage bin (well carefully) where it can dry much faster?

There is a powder you can get from lowes/home depot that solidifies the paint and then ya can just trash it...

If its water based, add concrete? It's prolly cheaper than 4 dollars per can treatment from home depot, especially if you keep some around for other repairs anyway.

I have never tried this, but it should work.

call ur local paint seller (sherwin williams, pittsburg paint, etc) and they should have a number for you to call that will come and pick up old paint and dispose of it the correct way.

Pls dont pour in down ur sink and kick that pro painter in his knutz. he should know better.
