Default Why drive a Legacy?

I am just curious what 'drove' everybody here to drive a Legacy? Since '02 when the WRX came out, Subaru offered a more powerful car with more aftermarket for similar cost...

What's your rationale for driving a Legacy vs. any other vehicle? Or, if you own other vehicles, do you prefer your Legacy? Why/not?

For me, I grew up around Subarus (1983 GL wagon, mountain machine, and my mom's '93 SVX - that thing was so smooth and powerful, until the tranny went out at <90K ) so I knew they were good vehicles based on my parents' love of them.

I saw a coworker's 1997 Legacy GT 5-speed in Quicksilver and fell in love - I wanted something AWD because I lived on the mountain and it was much sportier than what I had been driving (1991 Ford Escort). I looked at reviews and priced them out and it seemed to be something I could afford, so I saved pennies for about 6 months and borrowed a bit from my parents.

I liked that it was a little bigger than Imprezas, and seemed more refined - the interior felt better and I fit better in Legacies as I'm 6'3". They seemed like less of an econobox with AWD and more like a "grown-up car with some attitude". I was 20 years old at the time.

I also own a 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0L V6 and I prefer the Legacy for many reasons: it's lower to the ground so I feel safer, it feels a lot more nimble, it's a 5 speed (since I swapped!), and I can haul more people around in it. It also doesn't suck down the gasoline like my truck does.

I do like the fact that for the past 30K+ miles that I've owned the Ranger, it's been mostly problem free and I've only spent maybe $800 on maintenance, tune-ups, and repairs over the past three years: thermostat, front brake pads, oil changes, battery and cables, an accessory pulley, plugs + wires, door switches, and an airbag switch. For having 166K on the vehicle, I think that's pretty good!

But I take my Legacy if I don't need the truck.

I don't own a Legacy, but I'm a fan. Compared to the WRX, I think Legacy's gives off a more mature image. They're also more luxurious. I can see myself driving a Legacy in my mid 30s.

Compared to other cars, it'll be a more subjective opinion.

I'm 34. Our kids have big feet with big boots that are a big PITA when they kick you in the back of your seat.

Buying a winter beater won me over. A $500, 12 year old car, which handled better than my brand new Mitsubishi Eclipse, I was in love.

And when I went to get a new one, the Legacy has more interior room, and it's a little more sophisticated looking than a wrx.

Because its not an in your face toy like a wrx. The interior is more refined as a luxury car and no one has it around here or knows what it is.

There's a lot of reasons why I bought mine. The most practical reason is that I wanted something better in snow than my e30. What I really wanted was a Celica Alltrac, but I knew that was kind of a pipe dream to be able to get one in a reasonable amount of time, so I started looking at A4's, drove a few that would have been trouble, and then this popped up.

I've been wanting something like this for quite a while, something that's pretty rare, no one knows what it is, but is still a cool car, even though it essentially has the body of a much more boring car(no offense to 1st gen L owners, but they never really interested me), and this car popped up and I immediately knew it was perfect! And in my price range. Very good compromise for losing my e30 and getting AWD.

Mazda 323GTXs and Galant VR4s also caught my interest.

I am in the market for an 00-04 GT. They are right in my price range and have room enough for my kids. Does anyone know comparison wise if they have as much rear room as a 4th gen 95-99 maxima? If it is the same as my maxima it will be perfect. I am going to check one out this weekend so we will see. It is an 02, original owner, black leather 5 speed. Car is in perfect condition seriously especially the interior. It has high miles 140,000. Asking price is $4500. Is this a good price?

Yea that's a great price. I was looking at those too and the lowest I saw was 2 of them at 5k, one was a wagon, I think the other was auto, both were 00 model.

Rear room I don't know, those Maximas have a lot of space, and I've never been in a 4th gen Legacy, the 1st gen seems smaller but that doesn't say anything.

im in the same boat as most everyone here, it was the right price, i love the look, i love the way it performs and looks, and its practical because i live in the mountains and need the AWD which i have to say has proven to be better than my family's trailblazer and my dads dakota.

I was actually looking at getting a WRX Wagon when I ended up getting my Outback. The WRX was too small on the inside for my tastes being a DD and I knew with the turbo + lead foot I'd be getting LOTS of tickets and also didn't want to pay the higher $$$ for premium for a DD. I enjoy the fact that I can pass law enforcement in the opposite diection 30+ mph over the speed limit and not even get looked at.

AWD.

Enough room to carry the things I wanted.

Reasonably fast (compared to my 87 GL)

And looked good.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to leave the Subie train though with my next purchase unless they bring a MT LGT wagon or FXT to this country

haha i could not relate to you more

my first car was a 95 auto legacy lsi sedan, loved it but wasnt into cars nearly as much as i am now, i was more of the fast and furious 16 year old with A car, kind of kid.

bought her for $800

about 9 months later i got bored of her and accidently found myself driving my boss's 96 maxima 5 speed. i loved the manual and the vq power was amazing compared to my 2.2l

i ended up picking her up shortly after for a very good deal.
i beat the **** out of her and sold her off. while these events were going on i was still highly infactuated with subaru's and the reason i sold my max was to hopefully buy a subaru, there were no subarus in my price range nor were their any good looking ones. i am very picky about my cars. so i decided to buy myself another car so i bought a DSM, hahahah yes i know the infamous DSM trial, i drive 20 miles to work one way each day every day, so i need something reliable. do the math. my DSM took a **** on me and so i sold her because i didnt want to deal with the stress that came with that broken piece of **** as my DD. my dad works for subaru so this time i was determined to get back to my roots (parents have owned subarus since i was 3. yes 3.) after i sold my POS i drove the spare 04 explorer we had around until i found the subaru i know that was best. like all subaru enthusiasts i wanted the cliche 2.5rs, but if that didnt work out a 2.5gt would do just fine ( i knew i couldnt afford a wrx) so one day my dad called me and told me he had a lead of a green 98 legacy gt 5 speed (right up my alley) i was extatic! he played it off like it was sold and yadda yadda, i came home from work one night to no cars in my drive way, yet both my parents were home. thought that was a little fishy, plus my sisters were acting really strange. i went out in my garage and bam! there she was!

it was love at first sight, all the maintinence was done and she was ready to run for another 100xxx miles, i was still toying with the idea of selling her in spring to get a wrx so i did work on this car as if i were leasing it. come summer, my plans changed and i accidently fell in love with my car. people laugh when i say that but you guys can relate! now i cant get enough of my car my baby is my life! and when my engine finally goes on it, its a wrx swap for me. the car has turned out to be a part of me and without her i would

i love how its small but its still big enough to carry friends in, yet not get made fun of for driving a boat.
i love the engine and the low end grunt it has
i love my full exhaust and its ability to unleash the true subaru rumble
its a subaru. i love subaru and always will
i accidently got really, really attached to my car.

i hope my ****ty story didnt bore you.

i love my lego

My '89 sunbird blew a head gasket, I was a poor college student so my parents gave me their 97 Legacy and bought themselves a new '01 Legacy.

A few years later I crashed my '97 had no money still a poor college student so my parents gave me the '01 and bought themselves an '02 Legacy.

Few years later little bro needed a car so they gave him the '02 and leased a Calibur.

Calibur's lease was up, I was bored with my car and wanted something more reliable than a 7 year old car so I wanted a 5 door white Impreza. We go to Subaru dealer to "look" test drove a few Imprezas and then dealer and parents talked me into another Legacy this time an '08.

I looked at the perks to the Legacy, I liked the color better, it came with leather seats, and sunroof, it was brand new and the Imprezas were slightly used at around 14,000 miles and they were already a year old.

I'm 28 parents and salesman said Legacy is more grownup looking car, more luxury etc blah blah blah so I got a Legacy and mom bought my cars twin but in gold.....I might go for an Impreza next time around to get rid of the itch.

Where I live there are tons of Subarus....Kids have the rexes, and old people drive the outbacks and forester.....so having a legacy makes me unique.

I dont really care about fastness or modding the car...I just want a cool looking car on the outside.

For me, it was having STi power from factory, nice bilstein suspension setup, while still being comfortable, and practical. Plus BG wagons are f*ing sexy

no such thing as a "legacy elite". it is a figment of your dealer's imagination. please adjust your vehicle description accordingly.

AWD, huge amount of passenger and storage space vs my '98 Impreza. Very comfortable as well.

Yep its funny, those cars come from bob kolb dealership in upstate NY. For some reason he insists on putting the word elite everywhere.
