1985 GL Trouble Codes (22, 24, 73) Speedometer pegged at 125mph!!!
1985 Subaru GL (carbureted) 5 sp transmission.
Got my codes finally flashed, thanks to all who helped me figure this out. Turns out the module with the led that flashes codes was dislodged and pointed up towards steering column and I couldn't see the light at all!!! I had to turn all lights off in my garage (total darkness) and saw a hint of a light!! Repositioned the module (silver box) and was able to pull codes!!! I am getting the following codes, any tips as to what sensors may need to be replaced - or what needs to be looked at? CODES: (-- 1984 Through 1988 Carbureted Models --) 22 --- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or Circuit 24 --- Coolant temperature sensor or circuit, or Idle-up solenoid or circuit (1984 to 1988 carbureted) 73 --- Ignition Pulse System Possible issue causing code 22??? Not sure if this is an issue but the speedometer hasn't worked since I bought the vehicle - as soon as car starts rolling(1-2mph actual speed), the speedometer pegs itself out to max travel at 125mph and stays there until car stops, it then drops back to 0mph... Possible issue causing code 24??? Starting the subaru is a little rough. It cranks and fires but dies immediatley unless I feather the throttle, once warmed up it is find, but idles at 1250 RPM ? What is the idle-up solenoid? I am clueless to the 73 code!! Any help is much appreciated!

Speed sensor (as I have googleed it) is a sensor that senses (who'da thunk?) a shaft that rotates. I know nothing about the GL's speed sensor, but going off of that you probably have a bad/worn out pickup, which would be a situation in which to replacement is in order. You could try to ground the outgoing wires to see if it is a bad ground as well.
A linky: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm I'm confused about the 24 code...is it both at the same time, or is there a difference in which in a few years it is one type of sensor, and in some other's it is the other one? |

Ya I figured as much about the code 22 - speed sensor... My speedometer doesn't work It pegs out at 125mph when I am actually only going 2mph!
I don't know, thats just what it says when I look up 24... What about code 73? Can anyone confirm that is for the make/model of the vehicle? (ie. CALI 4x4?) |

Try grounding ti first...pegged means it still works, it's just confused. If no speed registered then it would be completely dead. Age and corrosion mess grounds up (not to mention Subaru has HORRIBLE grounding practices) and cause all sorts of erratic stuff. If car audio doesnt have proper grounds, sometimes it messes up gauges too (for an example)

Which wires would I ground?
Wow - it would be great if I could get the speedometer to work! I'm coming from a truck so this subaru feels like a go-cart to me! hard to tell how fast I am going!
What wires would I ground? The wires behind the dash? or wires on the tranny? I actually don't even know how the speedometer works so any info on this would be really appreciated! |

I PM'ed you back, but the speed sensor should be on the bottom side of the transmission. Look for wires going into it, that's usually connected to sensors. Your best bet is to get a repair manual for the car, just so you know what wires are what, and for future repair jobs. The more you know the better

Sorry after I sent you that message I had to go into work.... I got it now though.
I DID PICK UP A MANUAL THIS AFTERNOON! I will see if it covers the speed sensor, but the speedometer is actually getting a little better - it now goes to about 90mph when I am going 15mph and doesn't get up to max/peg until I get to about 25mph... I hope it is something simple! Will look at tracing down the wires. |

You really should post this over on ultimatesubaru.org I bet you'll get tons of advice from those guys. Hell, you could probably search for an answer there before you got a response here.
