Default 17" for the Legacy?

Looking at upping the wheel size to 17" and have a few questions.

I like the Superleggeras from O.Z. but I don't like the price ($229/rim). I like some of the rota wheels (tarmac, torque) but notice that the dimensions are 17x7.5. Will 7.5 rub? does anyone know where I can find a color chart for the multitude of finishes available on the rota's? (side by side comparo?).

Also, other recommended wheel brands that have similar styling?

thanks for putting up with an age old question that I couldn't find a direct answer to searching.

7.5 fits the BE's fine. I'm very happy with my rotas, and the low price is a bonus.

They will fit your car, I've had some on Bd/BG's previously. As for colors subydude is the best place to check out for them on cars and the vcarious colors available.

Oquipah, remember the tire is what rubs. The profile of say a 225-45-17 on a 7 or 7.5 rim is gonna be virtually identical at the area that will rub. The rim width dictates the tire width appropriate and the offset places the tire's width in space over the hub.

CN: Look more at tire width and wheel offset to see if a tire/wheel will rub.

Here's a good link to check if you have the right tire fitment:

Got 17x8 or don't bother IMHO. Lots of room on the Legacy. No reason not to go wider. 235/245 size tires would be a must IMHO too.

Once the tires are worn on our 17x7.5" rotas on our BE, I'm going to try hard to convince to wife to go 17x8 or 17x8.5 for wheels and some 245/40-17 tires.

I have 17X7 Enkei RSV with Yokohama Pradas and they rub with people in the back seat when I hit bumps or go around turns

That doesn't mean much without a tire sizing...or on what suspension setup?

Not true on the BD/BG (95-99) Legacys. 225s are about as big as you can go, and that often includes rolling the fenders. I don't know of anyone with 8" wide wheels on one either, but that don't mean much as I don't spend all that much time around here anymore. Can't say whether 8" wide wheels'll fit or not. 17x7 +48 is about the best. W/ 215/45R17 tires.

As always, though. YMMV.

Edit: That is a great page!

OBs have a lot more vertical space. The place that most often rubs on the BD/BGs is the rear fender lip. A 225/45 with +48mm offset is pushing it.

I got rubbing on a 205-55-16 on a +53mm 16x7 RS wheel when the rear was dropped with a Ver7 STi suspension. It was catching on the very outside corner of the tire on the inside edge on the trim. A little more camber would have solved it had I kept the setup, but that gives you an idea how prone to rub the BD/BGs are, specifically the rears.

Hmm...So let's say I will be putting KYB Gr2's on all four corners with either H&R Sport or Eibach Pro-Kit springs taboot. What issues might I have with the 17" rims?

Would an Camber adjustment correct or eliminate any rubbing issues? Sorry perhaps I should be posting in the newbie forums, I have no experience with new wheels.

Thanks,
Oquipah

Oquipah, its not the rim diameter that creates the rubbing problem, its the tires size(height and width) and rim offset that have to be addressed. The tire height and width and rim offset dictate where and how much space the wheel/tire take up and hence whether its gonna rub.

I basically agree with what Eric wrote above. If you have absolutely ideal offset for our cars(say +55mm) you can pull off a 225/45-17 on any rim width between 7 and 8"(again rim width basically doesnt matter, although it can have some effect on tire shape and performance) unless you absolutely slam the car.

If you are running a +48mm offset wheel on a moderately lowered car, consider a 215/45-17 instead of a 225. Even with a 215/45-17 on a 48mm rim, if you lower it enough you may need to roll the fenders and/or run some more camber at the rear. Rolling the fenders gives ~3/4" of additional lateral clearance at the fender lip - which is a good bit.

I havent moved up to 17s largely because I havent been able to find a wheel in a BD/BG friendly offset yet I want. I have been searching for a set of dark grey B4/GT-B wheels but havent found a set. I briefly had a set in champagne but they didnt go well with my car color IMO. They are 17x7 +53mm for reference. If I do find them I will be running 215/45-17s on them.

What is the stock/OEM wheel offset on 16" Legacy GT rims? The Rotas are 48.

Thanks for the stock GT rim measurements.

I plugged the info into the spreadsheet from above posts and into the one linked below as follows:

Initial Information (Stock Rim)
Tire : 205/55r16
Wheel diameter (inches): 16"
Wheel width (inches): 6.5"
Wheel offset (mm): 55

Proposed Information: (Rota)
Tire : 225/45r17
Wheel diameter (inches): 17"
Wheel width (inches): 7.5"
Wheel offset (mm): 48

http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

It appears that in wheel difference I will be gaining 6mm clearance from strut and losing 20mm on the fender side. That seems like a lot?

I am an idiot when it comes to this topic apparently and I appreciate your assistance to make sure I don't get a wheel package that doesn't work.

Thanks again,
Oquipah

On stock suspension you should be fine. 20mm isn't a great deal to lose - grab a metric ruler (or convert it) and check your car - it'll be fine.

The only issue would be if you lowered the car more than 1-1.5" IMHO...

My rough quick calcs say thats correct and I dont mean to disagree, but 20mm is quite a bit and on our cars with a moderate drop(1") enough to rub on turns/laden.

You may be right...my previous experience with lowering was with a GC Impreza...but the rear section on the BD looks very much the same to me.

That said, I was using 215/40/17 on an ET45 wheel...
