Default Has anyone ever tried accutane?

I have had pretty bad acne for about 10 years now... I'm 19 and I have almost tried everything the dermatologist has thrown at me. I even tried that Proactiv crap.

So I want to hear your stories about accutane... how it helped, how you felt on it and were there any side effects other then the usual dry skin?

awesome

use it

im 18 and have been going to the dermo for the last 5 years. like you, i had used EVERYTHING. i even went in every 2 weeks to have my "pores cleaned out". if youve had to do this, then you know how extremely ****ing painful it is and what you look like afterwards.

anyway, i used one full cycle of accutane and my acne dissapperated. heh. for a long time when the meds were on strong, i was told i didnt even need to wash my face with anything. its been a year since i have been off, and all i really need to do is face my face 2x a day with normal neutrogena like most people, and just wipe my face when i workout, and my face looks really good.

seriously, i highly recommend it. to think of all the time wasted at the dermos office.

o yes, sides.

well your lips will get really chapped, invest in lots of carmex. and like stated, dont wash your face, you will get really dry. and use moisturizer liberally. you wont have to worry about it clogging your pores because you are on accutance, so just make sure your face isnt flaking off.

you have to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. you will get dry skin, chapped lips, dry eyes, and dry nose. i had a friend that got nosebleeds everyday from it. and you may not be able to wear contacts when on it.

My brother wants that stuff or ZenMed. He has no insurance, so he's looking for a way to get a hold of the stuff in the black market, or Tijuana / Chinatown. Any suggestions?

Has anyone ever used Retin-A? (I think that's how it's spelled.)

I've got a prescription for it, but haven't used it yet.

What IgotWRXed said.

Stuff is awesome. Retin A didn't work for me at all.

I'm assuming you're a guy, but if you're a girl you HAVE to be on birth control - see the little Alien-shaped babies on the pill casings. You might want to ask your Dr. if there is anything a guy might have to worry about in that department.

good stuff. it is very strong so you are usually on it for 4 to 5 months for your treatment. your skin typically continues to get better after you have used it too. dry skin, lips, and nose are normal. you have to watch your liver and cholestrol with blood tests once a month / every refill. good luck!

It's settled... I just made an appt/ with my dermatologist to talk it over with him. The only reason I was skeptical about it was the supposed rumors that this medicine can give you mood swings. I have heard people have committed suicide on it.

The only problem I see with this medicine is I won't be able to drink for the 4 months or so that I'm on it!

My ex girlfriend used it. I'm not really sure if it made a difference with her skin, but it screwed with her mind pretty badly(hence the EX part). It practically made her untolerable. Take a chick with lots of emotions and multiply them by 1000.

yeah you have to think positive while you are on this medication (esp. girls. trust me i know!) you have the power to decide if this will make you depressed. there is only a handful who have gone as far as suicide. but you have to remember that those people had very severe acne before they started accutane so they were most likely already depressed. the medicine just pushed them over the edge.
be happy that your skin will look awesome when you are done and possibly sooner, and you will be fine. live like you normally do but carry moisturizers and no alcohol is a good idea!

So let's say you don't have insurance to see a dermatologist, can I get this stuff underground? Anyone?

long story short:

4 months of accutane

first month, all my cystic acne along my jawline got HUGE like no tommorow. got really itchy. my back also got covered with huge cystic acne. i couldnt even sleep. they felt like little stones trapped underneath my skin.

the very last week of my program, my face got extremely dry. so dry, it started to chap, itch, and looked really disgusting.

the last day, all my acne cleared up. it also left me with dry lips for 2 yrs.

now I still have a little acne and scars, but not to the level i had previously.

that stuff is really harsh on the liver.

My brother took it way back when (we are older dudes), about 13 years ago. Made his hair curl up and his appetite went berserk.

I used Retin-A and it was effective for me. I used the gel, not the cream. I also took long term anti-biotics. I ended up with almost no scarring, and neither did my bro.

I am 33 and I STILL use Clearasil daily face wash.

Same story here, tried everything, retin-a included... none of it really did anything. Did accutane, dried me out like crazy, my whole body was flaking. Not that visibly, most of my skin looked fine, but my bed was always full of skin dust. My face was pretty dried out. I used tons of chapstick (and still carry it everywhere i go, but don't use as much). It was kind of a pain in the ass, made my face look worse while i was on it.

I didnt notice any side affects other than more irritated skin, super dryness. No mood swings or other problems. I don't think it helped much though. My acne is much better now (a few years later) but i'm not sure if it can be attributed to the accutane or if it simply calmed down finally. I'm 23 now and was taking it when i was 19 IIRC.

I don't know if i'd reccomend it or not, it's kinda scary stuff, but it didnt seem to harm me and may have helped...

Hmmm.....that is very uplifting. I'm really worried, because my young brother's acne is getting to him psychologically. He actually stayed home last Saturday night just because of it. He has no insurance, and has used every over the counter to Proactiv, but nothing helps. I'm planning on contacting one of the following TJ pharmacies, pay them to get a doctor's authorization/prescription order, then get accutane asap:

Farmacia Castaneda

There were too many side effects from accutane, so I steered clear of it. Instead, I went the all-natural way. Vitamin B5. Also known as Pantothenic Acid.

Start off with 8 250mg a day. 4 at breakfast and 4 at dinner. After 2 or 3 months, depending on severity of the acne, move up to 12 pills a day.

I have been on B5 for over a year now and most all of my acne is gone. It actually took about 6 months for things to really clear up. This included the face, back of the neck, and back. I will get occasional breakouts if I miss a dose of pills. It's best to keep on schedule when taking your doses.

Cost is around $65 every 1.5-2 months.

Side effects? None.

Some people just don't respond, I was one of those. Let me tell you, I tried everything, for about 4 years before I went on ack, it's that simple, nothing worked. Does that mean not to try it? No, but sometimes it's not worth waiting around trying non-proven 'cures' when there is a proven solution available. While there might be a host of side effects, don't discount the psychological side effects of not doing it, sometimes those outweigh the physical.

Don't get your accutane overseas. You need blood monitoring before and after. Find a derm to work with and explain the situation, you might have some alternatives here.

I was on it way back when right after it became a big deal. I was going to suggest going to a different doctor since this guy has been dealing with you a while and nothing has worked and yet he didn't recommend it? That's a little strange. I was on it for one year. One weird skin thing I had was my fingertips began peeling, I mean really down to the lowest epidermis. Plus the lip dryness was really bad. But it worked. Oh, if you play sports be careful, your joints might start hurting a lot too. Good luck, it's best to try it now. (Retin-A cream can still be used to prevent scarring as I remember.)

I was on it for two cycles. The first one worked okay, but not well enough.

After those two cycles, I've had really good skin.

Like everybody said above, the side effects are pretty severe, but they're worth it IMO. I think it helped me open up socially. I'm glad I did it when I did (junior in HS).
