06 Clutch gone at 20k
So I've had a super stiff clutch pedal since I've owned my car (about a year and a half) and I finally had it looked at the Dealer wednesday. (late, I know. I had a suspicion I had an aftermarket clutch slipped in from the factory or something ) Immediately the tech says that my pressure plate is probably messed up and that is happens once in a while. Next day I get a call and apparently my clutch is down to the rivets and my flywheel is totally hot-spotted I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes, but yes, the friction material was completely gone. I can't believe it was even holding up until then. It held fantastic right up until they took it out. I am getting charged $200 to replace it with a new clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. Which doesn't seem too outrageous even though it is under warranty. I was going to go the upgraded clutch route but I just didn't feel like spending 1k to get a decent clutch + flywheel package. (ACT stage 1 with Streetlite) They would still charge the $200 even if I bought my own clutch to install so I just said F it. I am pretty sure that the problem with the stiff clutch pedal had something to do with the untimely demise of my clutch. I'm not THAT hard on it and I would expect it to last longer than it did regardless of my driving style. I suppose that is why they are fixing it for so cheap.
06 WRX Stock power for 1k miles Stage 2 for 19k miles 250 whp 315 wtq for 2k miles Use: A few mild launches, slipping the clutch a bit and mainly city driving with a few long road trips mixed in.

Write the check - a new stock clutch is all you need at that power level and for your driving style.

Clutch gone
I'm in the same boat. I think my clutch will go to 25K. How does Stage 2 not void your warranty?

pretty cool that the dealership stuck to the warranty even tho you're stage 2, im assuming they could get around it.

maby it has something to do with being a paranoid 06 5mt owner. i know myself, as well a many others, would rather slip the clutch a little nad have it replaced every 20k for $200 rather than destroy my tranny. like unabomber says, clutches are cheaper than gears.

A stage II 2.0l is bottom end and mid-range equal to the 2.5l's. Plenty of us have 100K+ on our clutches (with lots of autox/track etc. etc. on them). Not to mention the higher powered cars.
There is something wrong with the driving if you're killing the clutch so fast. ESPECIALLY on the stock engine, and even at stage II torque, there's no reason you should be killing on in 20k miles. That's crazy. Destroying gears tends to occur after damange from fast shifts or dropping clutches. Unless all of you guys are drag-strip regulars, there is something wrong with your DD technique. My buddy is on 50k + with his 06 stage II. Any bets he'll go to 100k+? (His last RS went 150 on the OEM before he sold it.) It's the driving |

My Pressure plate was screwed up and that is what caused the premature wear, and why they decided to warranty it even though my car is modified.
It's not at stage 2 power level either...It's got a VF-29 made 315 wtq on a low reading mustang with only minor tuning. No doubt my driving puts more stress on the clutch than normal. I drive almost all city, and launch my car using the old clutch slip quite a bit. I wasn't suprised to see that it needed to be replaced at all. Relieved they decided to warranty it though! |

i just replaced my clutch at 27k... not b/c i needed one, but b/c of all the horror stories you here about burning up clutches on dynos after bigger turbo installs.
my stock clutch was in great condition, i was very happy to see how much friction materail was left... i am keeping as a replacement part if the new goes anytime soon (ACT street clutch/fly) |

My 06 was on stock for 2k miles, stage 1 for 9k stage 2 for about 10k, and i've been on a big 16g putting down your same numbers for about 5k miles before it went into to the dealer for the trans. when i took it in for my trans rebuild at 26k they said the clutch was on it's last leg. And that I needed a new flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch, also had a stiff pedal since i purchased it. when I replaced the clutch at 34k miles after a couple of track days, the clutch was not even 1/3 worn. the flywheel, and pressure plate were perfectly fine (few hot spots here and there).
I've heard a lot of stories about premature wear, but yours is one of they few with actual confirmation of total wear. I |

If you're not experiencing any problems with it, I wouldn't advise letting the dealer muck it up.
