Default FINALLY bought a 99 EJ25 for my 97 Brighton 1.8! Advice before I start?

FINALLY, I bought an engine. Not only that, I got almost EVERYTHING under the hood. Really, I've got it all to work with. Engine, Tranny, ECU, power stearing, AC, coil, etc. Oh, the harness is the only thing I won't have. I don't think I need it anyway.

SO...I'm going from MAF to MAF, OBDII to OBDII, SOHC to SOHC. The only issue is have to change the clutch. Issue?

So what am I in for? I'm looking to start Friday, Feb 27th. I'll try to document this for everyone, but I can't say I'll be stopping to take pics at every step. I want to get this done.

Hey, you're right. Why do I always think I've got DOHC?Correction, this is SOHC to SOHC.

Not that it matters. Probably what matters more is going to a hydrolic clutch. pedal box? uhhh...this guy is going from 2.5 to Japanese STi. He's got the whole front clip. I get anything he doesn't use. Hmmm...don't know.

If you wish, you CAN use the cable clutch with the new tranny and 2.5 clutch, just reuse your old clutch fork and move the pivot bolt down to the bottom hole in the trans. It will work without any problems.

If you convert to hydro.. You will need this pedal box assembly. The best way to do it is to get it from a US 2.5 liter, manual trans car. If you try to piece one together with new parts it will drive you broke. Once you get the pedal box and master cylinder you need the line (or you can make one) and the slave cylinder.

As stated a RHD JDM master cylinder can be used with modification, talk to supermoose about this.

good luck!

Is your Brighton an automatic?....I missed that part. If you already have a 5-speed why not just use your 1.8 tranny and avoid converting to hydro and also avoid matching the rear diff?

Actually a very good point, I automatically assumed it was orignially a manual trans, which was wrong of me. And then I realized it was a 97.

If its an auto, An RS manual trans should bolt right in.

If its a manaul, the rear diff will need to be changed.

97 was kinda weird... autos were 4.11 while manuals were 3.90

all 2.5 liter manual trans imprezas were 4.11 final drive. meaning RS (manual transmission) is 4.11

the imprezas were different until 2nd half of 95 when the ratios kinda flip flopped between the auto and manuals. yours falls into this later run with the gear ratios as listed above.

I think they used the same trans for both EJ22 and EJ18 in 97. When you get the trans out, verify the ratio to figure out exactly what you have.

It's a manual, 97 1.8. Cable clutch, which I thought needed to be changed. Guess not. Truth be told, I'm totally lost. Then again, I've never let that stop me on other projects.

I'm not planning on switching tranny's right now, as I don't need to. I don't figure 110 HP has hurt my tranny any, and would like the different gear ratio. Not to mention NOT switching the rear diff.

The more I think about this, the more I think it's going to drop right in, bolt right up. Whatdaya think? seems tooo simple to me. I can use the clutch, the harness, the EVERYTHING! No?

You can use the 1.8 clutch and flywheel. But I would reccomend getting a 2.5 liter clutch, flywheel and pressure plate (If you dont already have one on teh engine). THis setup will work fine with a cable clutch. Maybe just swap the throwout bearing for a new one while your in there.

You can always convert to Hydro clutch if you really want to later on when you have it apart again when/if you decide to chage transmissions for the 4.11 gears

Streetman--Listen to Hawk...change your clutch and use your stock tranny. Change every possible seal while you're at it too.

I think you're on the right path. I'm doing the same from 96 2.2 to 99 2.5. I've tried to ask the same questions you're asking...but I don't think anyone has the answer bcause each situation is different...or they're just not telling.

You need to look at what you have and see if it will "plug-in" My car is OBDII and so is my EJ25...BUT the ECU will NOT just plug in. The connectors are different. From looking at both of my engines, wiring diagrams, and reading posts from guys that have done the 1.8 to 2.5--I think I am going to use my sensors and engine harness from my 2.2 and run the ej25 off of the 2.2 ECU. I know I will need to use my 2.2 coil because the connector is different, ej25 plug wires, 2.2 MAF and airbox, and probably splice the ej25 injectors onto the 2.2 harness. Oh...and I think I will need to use my original O2 sensors on the ej25 manifold because the 96 ones have 2 wires and the 99 have 4. If I'm missing anything...I'll figure it out when I get there. The hardest part right now is finding the time to get it done.

I hope your does ECU plug in and you're good to go...otherwise we may be doing similar swaps. I'm new at this too...so don't take my words as gospel--If you find out anything that will help me out...let me know.

Good Luck

I'm not sure if the ECU will plug in, but I don't think it will. Who cares? I'll run the 1.8's and have it nice and rich for when I start to mod. Then, of course, I'll have to get a SAFC to tune it a bit. Hehehe...already thinking mods. How much can I get for a 99 ECU?

Hawk-

Thanks for letting me know about the clutch. The clutch in the 1.8 is totally smoked, so I need to use the 2.5's. Just thought I'd be forced to go hydro. No? Perfecct. I'll do what you said to...or try to. Did I mention, I'm lost? BTW, I'm thinking the 1.8's flywheel is lighter. Can I use it with the 2.5's pressure plate/clutch?

As far as the tranny goes, why would I want 4:11 gearing? Isn't 3.90 shorter? I'm happy with shorter. I want this sucker to rip through gears 1-3. It's all about down low for my driving preference.

Good feel with a cable clutch, and short gearing, extra HP, and lower weight.

Think I'm doing this right?

pitcrew-

Why would I need to change the coil? It looks like the 2.5's will work just fine. No?

your 97 coil might be the same?...my 96 has a different plug connecting the engine harness to the coil than the 99 ej25 uses.

The 1.8 flywheel is lighter and you can use it--make sure you get it resurfaced if your old clutch was "toast".

Tranny wise...you can use either one but you need to match the rear diff if you use the RS one. I'm just saving you work by telling you to keep your existing one. You can basically do your swap without disconnecting axles or rear driveshaft if you keep it in.

Yeah, I don't want to change the tranny. I would, if need be, but I'm fairly certain I want shorter gearing.

Gearing. 4.11 is actually lower in the fact that the transmission/propshaft are turning 4.11 time for each revolution of the wheels. whereas a 3.90 turns 3.9 revs per wheel revolution. This means youll have more hill climbing torque and slightly better accel with 4.11. The 3.90 will give you lower revs on the expressway and maybe slighter better gas mileage with a higher top end (if you are not otherwise limited). Of course this all depends on the actual gearing inside the trans, but they tend to be pretty much the same between the models with variations in 5th gear (Example: 5 speed legacy and legacy GT are the same gearing except legacy has 3.90 and GT has 4.11 final drive. Legacy outback 5 speed hasa 4.11 final drive and the ratios for 1st-4th are identicle as the other 2 but 5th is shorter). Easiest/cheapest way would be to use the trans. you have for now.

Coil- Is the 97 coil a 4 wire connector or 3? the SOHC 2.5s used a 4 wire connector, this coil had an internal ignition controller/ignitor. this is NOT compatible with the older 3 wire version. these older, 3wire cars had a seperate ignitor on the firewall. THe plug wires are also different.

whatever ECU you are using, make sure the coil you use matches. Once you know what coil you are using make sure you can get plug wires that will both, match the coil end, and have the longer leads on the plug end that the SOHC 2.5 requires.

Clutch- I am using a 2.5 flywheel clutch and pressure plate. I think supermoose ran a 1.8 flywheel, ask him about compatibility to be sure. With the 2.5 clutch and L trans, the cable works fine and feels the same as it did with the 1.8 clutch. I have since upgraded to a newer outback transmission (my other one was simply worn out).

P.S. I am uncertain what coil the 97s used. If it is the older style you may not be able to use a facotry plug wire and that can be a show stopper. If this is the case let me know, ill let you know where to get custom ones made. If it is the newer style coil, youre all set.

Hawk--I made need the info on the custom plug wires too...I assumed the 2.5 ones would work...but I didn't try the fitment on the 2.2 coil.

I don't know if it is 3-wires or 4 on my 96 2.2...but I do know the connector is different from the engine harness to the coil. Will I be able to use the older style coil to run the ej25 off of my 2.2 ECU?...or am I wrong?

Thanks for the good info.

Yeah, you can run the EJ25 using the 2.2 coil If you are using the 2.2 ECU. like I said, plug wires are the problem.

I am running a SOHC Phase II EJ25 off of my 95's 1.8 ECU and coil. I had to get custom plug wires made. The place I got them from still has the specs and part number for the ones I had made to run the old style coil with the new engine. SO they shouldnt be too hard to get.

Streetman/Pitcrew- You guys have any pics of your coil so that I can see which ones you have?

Thats a pic straight off my 95. This is the old style coil with the 3 wires.

new...

Off a legacy GT, the newer 4 wire coil. Best pic I could find online. Which one does yours look like?

The legacy GT looks just like my 99rs...BUT the other is slightly different in shape to my 96 coil. The plug conections appear to be the same: male posts on the 99 coil and female on the 96. I have a great side-by-side shot of the 96 and 99--but the forum isn't letting my post it???

I'll probably juct splice the connectors from my 96 wires onto my 99 plug wires...should work?

you can splice the plug wires, but thats definaly not the best idea. If you have the proper tools and connectors you can make your own... or have some made.

If you dont mind e-mailing a pic to [email protected] Ide kinda like to see the 96 coil. Im guessing its very similar to mine and the ones used up through 98'

Cool, Ive seen some pretty ghetto things before (including cut and taped plug wires) on people's cars. Just making sure. Didnt mean to imply that you were that type or anything, just making sure.

I replied to your mail, thanks for sending the pic of the coil.

3 more days until your swap...do you have everything you need?
