What would be the best size rim and tire combo to put on my 08 wrx wagon.I was thinking an 18x8 or 18x7.5

Ok. . . you are going to need to classify what you mean by "best"
its a rim. . . yeah a very straight forward part, but what are your goals with said part? just looks? better grip what? personally go wider, they give more grip, look better. . . pain is tyres are more expensive. next time you thread . . . be specific, no more whats the best |

Depends on what you are looking for. If you want lighter wheels go with 17x8. If you want looks go with 18x8. If you do either of them with 235/40 tires you won't have to roll/cut your fenders.

Whatever is just barely big enough to fit around your brakes, anything larger is for people who have a small penis and feel the need to compensate.

TAWRX,
Please fill our your profile (especially your location). In the blue stripe on the top of the page, it's user cp. Wheels are a very individual choice. For me.....I know how many times I "find" a pothole and say out loud "boy....I'm glad I've stuck with 17's" because any 18 would be bent. I'm sticking with 17's on my LGT in a 7" width with a bit of offset go get them more outside the car. This also works well for track. To stay in class, I gotta stick with 17x7 and the offset can't be more than 5mm from stock. There ya go. jack |

EDIT: Just FYI, I run 17" x 8" rims on my summer wheels. Come May they will have 235/40 17 tires. Last edited by kilfarsnar; 01-06-2009 at 11:58 AM. |

Some people go with 18 because they are getting a big brake kit and requires a large wheel. However, those people I know usually have Volks because they are light.
Moar tire=moar grip. That doesn't mean put a 255 tire on a 7.5 inch rim. |

no
the rim is the outer part of the wheel to which the tire is mounted the rim has a certain profile including a bead seat to hold the tire in place in the case of bicycles a wheel is built by lacing a rim to a hub with spokes in the automotive case the whole wheel is cast / forged or pre-welded The Wheel and Tyre Bible is an excellent resource for further information. Now let's get back on topic |

good explanation UkNuck.
OP, you need to be more specific as to what your reasons are for changing wheel size. example: I went from stock 17x7.5 +52 offset (stock) to 17x8 +48 offset I wanted: wider wheels so I can mount wider tires, slightly wider track and didn't want to worry about rubbing either the struts or the lip of the fender. I got all that and am now just waiting for summer/my stock tires to wear out so I can fully justify putting on 235/40 summer tires |

i also wanted a wider stance with more grip. I went with 18x8.5 SVN's w/ a +48 offset. I needed to roll my rear fenders to get those damn 255/35/18's in there

I recommend 17" for the best daily-drive setup. I've had 18's previously, and would not go back. Just a bit harsher....
