Pretty much sums it up for me when I hear "new diesel models" coming to the US.

When I think diesel, I think reliability and longevity. I would use neither of those two words when talking about current european cars, yet, they seem to be the only ones putting out diesel options.

I would freakin love if it would. I'd be down to buy an extended cab version in 4x4. It would have to get at least 26-27mpg highway though and be able to tow a 5000lb travel trailer. |

The specs on the Cherokee sound great. I know they say EU numbers but still. If it were to say get 23 city and 32 highway. That would be awesome. If I could tow my race car and trailer at about 4000lbs and still return mid 20 mpg I am sold.

I've looked at the TDI VWs...really like the Sportwagen. But I'm holding out and praying for a Mazda 3 170+hp diesel getting high 40s.

GM has had a 4.5L diesel in the works since 2008 IIRC. From what I understand, they have no plans to revive the project. Who knows, maybe in the years to come with the new redesign but I wouldn't hold my breath..

The day Jeep offers me a diesel Wrangler is the day they get my money. Not a moment before.
I would also love to see a diesel Tacoma/Hilux, but Toyota would ask $40k+ for it. |

But yea, they have to be careful and not price themselves out of the market by adding a diesel. |

I'd love to see it done, but I doubt you'll get more than 26-27. |

You're probably right, 30 mpg is too much . . . but a truck like a Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma with a decent diesel should be able to net close to that 26/27 mark AND tow at least 6,000 lbs. Right?

I'm aiming for a VW TDI Sports wagon. I really, REALLY like the torque and power (and I guess fuel mileage) that thing gets.

If the grand cherokee diesel can hit 32mpg and tow more than that, then a frontier should be able to. The grand cherokee diesel is rated 32mpg on the european highway test, gas cars usually show up with less mpg in the EPA test, but maybe a diesel will hold steady since 80% of vehicles are diesel in europe and the tests are more set up for diesel.
