Default Diesel Car Lineup in the U.S. for 2013 and 2014: Preview and Report

Quote:
New Models, New Engines, New Manufacturers for the New Year

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec

With the start of 2013 only a few weeks away the discussion is already shifting to new cars for model year 2014 and more than a few automakers will be launching brand new diesel-powered offerings.

2012 was a good year for diesel, even though all of the new models officially wore model-year 2013 labels. Porsche joined the ranks of automakers selling diesels in the U.S. with the Porsche Cayenne Diesel, and several other new diesel models made their debut, including the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec, the Volkswagen Beetle TDI, and the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI, the latter being the only diesel-powered droptop sold in the U.S.

These four models are only the beginning. In 2013 and beyond we’ll see multiple new diesel-powered offerings in store for buyers in the U.S.
Expect Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler/Jeep, and Mazda to join the diesel party plus new models from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
Here’s a look at what diesel buyers can expect in U.S. showrooms in 2013.
Audi

Audi A8 TDI near the Zugspitze

Last month in Los Angeles, Audi officially announced its diesel plans for 2013.

The Ingolstadt-based marque will offer the A6, A7 and A8 diesel sedans in 2013, as well as the mid-sized Q5 crossover for the 2014 model year. The A8 TDI will be the first to reach the States in the spring of 2013, with the A6 TDI and A7 TDI following in the fall.

The four new models will be joining the Q7 TDI in Audi’s diesel fleet, and will be using an updated version of the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel that is also found in the Volkswagen Touareg TDI and

the Porsche Cayenne Diesel. The Q7 will also get the new engine for 2013.
Audi estimates that the 240-horsepower A8 TDI will achieve 24 mpg (9.8l/100km) in the city and 36 mpg (6.53 l/100km) on the highway, and the large sedan will be propelled from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds.

Although not announced, we expect the 3 Series competitor A4 to become available as a diesel with its upcoming redesign for 2014. Audi plans to double its diesel sales in the U.S. by 2015 and offer e-tron electric vehicle technology by 2020.

Two models continue. The compact A3 TDI returns 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg (7.8 l/100 km / 5.6 l/100 km) on the highway, and the full-size Q7 TDI SUV is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway (13.83 l/100 km / 9.4 l/100 km). The upcoming A4 in Europe has been reported to achieve as much as 51 mpg (4.61 l/100 km) on the highway with its 2.0 TDI power plant.

Pretty much sums it up for me when I hear "new diesel models" coming to the US.

When I think diesel, I think reliability and longevity. I would use neither of those two words when talking about current european cars, yet, they seem to be the only ones putting out diesel options.

Should be or you want it to be?

I would freakin love if it would. I'd be down to buy an extended cab version in 4x4. It would have to get at least 26-27mpg highway though and be able to tow a 5000lb travel trailer.

The specs on the Cherokee sound great. I know they say EU numbers but still. If it were to say get 23 city and 32 highway. That would be awesome. If I could tow my race car and trailer at about 4000lbs and still return mid 20 mpg I am sold.

The RAM is supposed to get the diesel drivetrain out of the Grand Cherokee soon. If it sells well, which I imagine it will, it should spur the General and Ford to follow suit.

I've looked at the TDI VWs...really like the Sportwagen. But I'm holding out and praying for a Mazda 3 170+hp diesel getting high 40s.

GM has had a 4.5L diesel in the works since 2008 IIRC. From what I understand, they have no plans to revive the project. Who knows, maybe in the years to come with the new redesign but I wouldn't hold my breath..

The day Jeep offers me a diesel Wrangler is the day they get my money. Not a moment before.

I would also love to see a diesel Tacoma/Hilux, but Toyota would ask $40k+ for it.

As long as jeep can offer a diesel wrangler unlimited under $30k, it would sell extremely well, especially in all the rural farming states. It would also sell very well in the states with a small 3.0L diesel and a truck bed.

But yea, they have to be careful and not price themselves out of the market by adding a diesel.

I believe the Cruze is getting a small diesel and the Canyon/Colorado may be returning to US sales with a diesel option. Not sure if or when the Silverado/Sierra will get a diesel in the 1500. I know there are quite a few GM SUV's or Crossovers in Europe that have 2.0L turbo diesel powertrains. Perhaps one of those may make it's way to the US in the next few years.

Problem is, I want 30 mpg highway when i'm not towing, and a decent mpg when towing, like 15 or more. And i need to tow about 5,500 lbs, so a Canyon is out of the question. I think the right diesel in a 1500 pickup could get 30 highway and still be rated to tow 7,000 -- or am I wrong?

30mpg in a full size truck is a pretty tall order.
I'd love to see it done, but I doubt you'll get more than 26-27.

You do realize that the torque at the wheels with fuel-sipping diesel cars isn't anything spectacular, right?

You're probably right, 30 mpg is too much . . . but a truck like a Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma with a decent diesel should be able to net close to that 26/27 mark AND tow at least 6,000 lbs. Right?

I'm aiming for a VW TDI Sports wagon. I really, REALLY like the torque and power (and I guess fuel mileage) that thing gets.

It is spectacular when compared to a similarly fuel sipping gas powered car.

Not after accounting for the magic of gearing. Better low end torque, sure.

If the grand cherokee diesel can hit 32mpg and tow more than that, then a frontier should be able to. The grand cherokee diesel is rated 32mpg on the european highway test, gas cars usually show up with less mpg in the EPA test, but maybe a diesel will hold steady since 80% of vehicles are diesel in europe and the tests are more set up for diesel.
