Thumbs down Bad service at Stohlman Subaru RANT

Hi All,

I wanted to warn people about Stohlman Subaru.

I'm new to the area and took my car for a quick check for what turned out to be a loose wheel bearing. Not knowing where to go in the area I took the car to Stohlman...big mistake. Besides the outright rude treatment from the service manager and tech, I got charged $45 for a 2 min test drive and getting the car on a lift to spend 5 min checking the bearing. I waited for a total of 1.5 hours and got a $640 estimate to change the one wheel bearing. The service manager refused to even talk with me, she just dropped the forms with the cashier and walked away, ignoring my questions. I'm going to file a complaint and will see how they respond.

I've found 2 VW owners who had simliar terrible experiences. My friend had his GTI's body bent by an improperly positioned lift. Aparantly their reputation in the area is notoriously bad. Anyone have experiences with their service good or bad?

I've already got my appointment for Andrewtech next week. I hope they stand up to their great reputation. I will get the bearing replaced, my upipe and downpipe installed for less than Stohlman quoted me for one bearing.

Wouldn't hearing more good things then bad make it more like 60/40 or 65/35?

yup. they backed our WRX wagon over a curb and bent the axle-back, then refused to do anything about it.

Dulles Motors is no better.....my LGT has been in the shop for about three weeks over five trips for what should have taken two days in a single trip. Result? Broken door panel, scraped up BBS wheels, fu><ored turbo stud. I'm still sorting out the car....on my own, since no other dealer will touch it now and I won't go back to those ****ing hacks.

I bought my WRX at Don Beyer and I've had my routine maintenance done there. they've been good to me. I'd give them a B+ to A- overall. I've heard nothing but good things about AndrewTech.

Andrewtech all the way.

I took my car to Stohlman a while back for some repair work, charged $75 to turn around and say "yeah its broken like you told us, and we wont fix it". Service dept was obnoxious and they even said thier own test results were screwy and they didnt know why the tech wrote down what he did. I later got a "how was your service with us" call from SOA, yelled at them and got my money refunded. which is nice. Called them a short time ago about an AC issue (which andrewtech fixed on the spot, yay andrewtech) and the lady treated me like crud. me: "hi, i was wondering if i could schedule a time for you to take a look at my A/C, I think it needs a recharge or possibly repair" her: "yeah you and everybody else, im sure your just being paranoid"

Sounds like you talked to the same woman I did. If the dealership doesn't respond to the complaint my next call is to SOA. I would like my $45 back too.

The parts department at Stholman is great, I haven't had any bad experiences with the service bay, but my car was only there once for it's 30k when I bought it.

There is a dealer review section IIRC, check it out. I already voiced my experience and it's not good. So not good that I don't even to go their showroom, nevermind buying a car from there.

I just talked to a buddy and made sure he didn't put a deposit on a limited edition STI over there, instead he is ordering elsewhere. I'll keep doing so to Stolhmans.

They'll stand up to their reputation, they just did a wheel bearing and hub for me last week and were awesome about it.

Got my MY02 wagon from Richie at Stohlman in 2002 (duh). Richie was straight up (told me (maximum suby noob) not to get the factory BBS, that aftermarket wheels were cheaper) and the price was pretty good too. Service there has been OK, quickly replaced the radiator under warranty on the MY02; they noticed the water in my 06 tailight before I did but then ordered the wrong part.

BUT... when I was shopping for the 06, Richie was out when I stopped by. The other guy said he could get me a 06 from another dealer but then it turned out he couldn't, so I ended up buying from Dulles. The 2nd sales experience left a bad impression - seemed a little slimey.

CN - mixed bag, with mostly good service from Stohlman

Harry from MB Autox with the red SVX?

Anyway, I bought my second Subaru from Dulles, best arrangement ever made, customer service was great. Dulles attempted to bring a car over from Stohlman but Stolhman was being a jerk about it so Dulles sourced it elsewhere. I didn't work with Richie though. Stohlmans tried to lowball other dealers after knowing other dealers had better offers which is a bad charateristic to me to win a sale.

I think the problem is, some people just don't take their work seriously or knows how to provide a good service to keep their customers coming back. Those establishments should close down from lack of business or tell us there are stupied people who doesn't care if they are treated poorly while paying. Services are especially bad when there are legit customer compliants and they fail to improve.

I'm a AutoX noob (first one this Sunday). I've only ever even seen one SVX and never owned one.

I thought Richie was long gone from Subaru and made the jump to the more lucrative Acura.

He let me test drive the 06 STi to see if I wanted to sell my car for it, which I appreciated since it made decision to keep my car easier. Farrish wouldn't even let me drive a used 05.

EDIT: No I didn't beat on the car (floor it etc), I know what the acceleration of an sti is.

A wheels bearing change shouldn't be more then 300 bucks, I had mine done at some shop on the Pennsylvania turnpike for about 220 dollars. That was not a fun trip by the way, the bearing had a total failure in the middle of the night on a section under construction, so no shoulder and cars flying by at 60+ mph.

Riche is still there I just saw him there on Monday. He'll deffinetly give you a good deal on a car if you buy it there. I got my WRX there too, 4 years ago.

I have the same sort of bad experiences. Had a bad wheel bearing. I asked them to get the parts, got the call to come in on a certain day to get things fixed. I came in at 7am to ensure I could fit in a full workday. I sat for 2 hours and when called to get my car the service rep told me I had a bad wheel bearing and they would need to order parts. I reemed him for wasting my time and then he had the balls to tell me I must suck at driving because I have chips and scratches on all four wheels. He seemed shocked I didn't care about the BBS's and told him stuff happens when you're from Colorado.

Then again, I've had worse service at other places like MachV. Parts dept guy is nice, the service and installation owner is an ass.

Pick your poison around here.

This is why I do most of my own work. Make the drive to AndrewTech Automotive in MD right off 270. I will be worth the extra drive and he does the best work.

Here are my experiences with the place:

Sti for regular service...a bit expensive for an oil change but done in a timely manner.

VW bug for purchase...a bit pushy and wanted us to buy to fill the month's quota when we knew we had to wait till we got back from a trip to buy. Ultimately found exactly what we wanted.

VW bug for service...again a bit on the expensive side. Fixed the greasy crap that was coming up when we used the windows and replaced the trunk latch that made the idiot light stay on. The funny thing is that when we went to get the car they had the window rolled down. So we rolled it up and insulation/grease came up with it. My wife just about had a shizz fit and they fixed it. I still think it was funny though.
