Default Who's the #1 Subaru dealership in the country now?

According to this NY Times article, http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/12/bu...partner=GOOGLE:
Quote:
FOR Kitty Van Bortel, the owner of Van Bortel Subaru and Van Bortel Ford in Victor, N.Y., 2002 was a tad disappointing. After three years of taking the prize as the top-selling franchise of Subaru of America Inc., Ms. Van Bortel came in second.

Even so, sales at her Subaru dealership held steady at about $43 million, and she lost the top spot by a mere 17 cars.
That must be tough, to lose out by only 17 cars after being on top so long.

So, this information immediately prompts the question: Which Subaru dealership in the U.S. sold the most Subarus last year?

IRVINE IRVINE IRVINE!

I honesly dont know, but my bets are on Irvine Subaru in southern california

OK OK im a little biased because i bought my car there, but hey they have a great track record and are pretty much involved with the Subaru community as well

Irvine is great. I would believe that they are one of the top sellers of Imprezas (bought mine there too), but I don't think for Subarus in general. Typically subarus sell better in bad wether areas (Irvine definitely not being that).

nah. irvine subaru IS the #1 wrx dealer in the country, if not the world, selling right around 100 wrxs a month since it was released if i'm not mistaken. however, subarus are not nearly as popular in southern california as they are in other states like washington and other parts of the US where there is more "weather" than in southern california.

but it would be interesting to see who the #1 dealer in the country is. please post if you have the info, thanks.

100 WRXs a month would mean they sold roughly half the WRXs in the entire US in 2002. It may hurt areas like the northwest, midwest, and northeast to be the "#1 volume dealer" since there are more dealers.

I find it hard to believe that 20,000 WRXes have been sold in California since March, 2001.

Do they even count New England? The fanchise is not owned by SOA up here.

Well, given that Van Bortel Subaru is also in a region controlled by a non-SOA distributorship (Subaru Distributors Corporation controls NY and nothern NJ), I assume that New England is included when compiling sales statistics.

Does the cold affect the brain up there? 100 per month would be 1200 per year, not 12,000. It would be very possible if they sold many more Imprezas than anything else. $43million takes about 1900 cars at an avg. price of $22,600. Still, I'd be surprised if the #1 dealer sold over 50% Imrezas over Outback/Legacy. If the #1 did sell more Imprezas than Outback/Legacy, then that is a great sign of potential for SOA to bring more hot cars like they are.

i don't know. i do know that california has more cars than any other state by a large margin. i also know that in a 60 mile radius of where i am now, i can think of 9 subaru dealers, and they are all selling pretty well right now. this isn't in the "midwest" or "southeast", this is in a small area of southern california.

it would be interesting to know the percentages of sales per region. you'd think that someone would be able to post that info by now.

and yes, i'm pretty sure that irvine subaru has sold close to 2000 wrxs, which is close to 100 per month. there are a LOT of wrxs here. we have meets that are announced a week before they happen and 60 imprezas show up just from local people. and most of them are modded. it's like a little impreza show. it's fun.

And, if Subaru had more than a pathetic market share in CA, you might have a case.

So, Prestige Subaru, in Asheville, SC, has stepped up to the podium to claim the Southeast Region unit sales title. Aren't there any claimants from the Central, Mid-America, NY-Northern NJ, New England, Penn-Jersey, or Western regions? If we can round them all up, then they could all lay their cards out on the table together.

Oh, and Van Bortel is probably the champ in the NY-Northern NJ region. Two down and five to go.

I suspect the champ is in Colorado, maybe Flatirons?

I didn't see him say that California has more Subarus than any other state. What I read was:

Quote:
"i do know that california has more cars than any other state by a large margin."
And this statistical table from FHWA is confirmation.

Actually, rereading it, he was cobbling together a suggestion that the large number of vehicles in CA, combined with the large number of Subaru dealerships, might mean that CA has the most Subarus. But as you pointed out, this ignores market share.

If the champ is in Colorado I would guess Burt Subaru.

The champ in Colorado Is Flatirons. Irvine has sold a few more WRX's, but nobody sells more Outbacks.

Flatirons in Boulder was the largest volume dealer in CO 2 years ago in March when the WRX was released. They recieved more shipments of WRX's that were not ordered by customers than any other dealer in the state for the mere fact that they were the largest volume dealer in the state. Whether or not they still are, I do not know, but something tells me they are.

I don't think they're the #1 dealer in the country though.

edit: damn, Bret posting in at the same time I did

I know we (Carter Subaru, Seattle) are a top 20 dealer...

and I also know that Hueberger in Colorado Springs is a top 20 dealer...

not certain of the standings overall tho...

It does NOT say number 1 in what measurement. Maybe they are the number 1 Chevy/Subaru dealer, or first in sales of accessories, or whatever. As I bought my WRX there, I am sure they are actually a rather good dealer, but I suspect they are not number 1 in sales volume.
