Default Can you use a Cobb DP with stock exhaust and still go to Stage 2?

I have an '09 WRX with the stock exhaust and will be ordering a Cobb AP tomorrow. Two quick questions:

When I go to Stage 2, do I have to go with a full CBE or is installation of a Cobb DP (connected to the stock exhaust) enough to get me most of the benefits of Stage 2? Are there any CEL or fitment issues?

TIA for your help.

If you do a downpipe only instead of TBE you will not get the results you want. Simply put, the point is to get better flow. If you do not open up the full TBE you are defeating the purpose of the stage2 map. It makes adjustments for the larger diameter (3"). Will you see a difference? Probably. Will you see gains like others running stage2? Probably not. If you are trying to stay away from the noise, I would recommend the Perrin catback. I have it on my 08 hatch and it is not very loud and has no highway drone. The CBE is usually the easiest thing to find used if its a money thing.

Thanks--I appreciate the advice. Noise is definitely an issue. I'm more interested in acoustic serenity and stealth than I am in making a statement as a boy-racer. In the '09's, the biggest bump in TQ/HP is in Stage 1, not Stage 2, but I'd hate to marginalize Stage 2 gains by not letting the motor breathe well.

dp is where most of the restriction is. that is why you dont gain much of anything when just installing a cbe.

We have seen that there is very little difference when running just the downpipe for stage 2, especially on the dual outlet exhaust cars like the Legacy or the WRX sedan. However, even on a single outlet exhaust, the power loss is somewhat minimal.

Installing a downpipe and running the stage 2 map will give you great gains AND allow you to stay "under the radar" as it were with a nice and quiet stock catback system. In fact, many of our customers are going this route and until you start trying to really push your car power wise, the results are impressive.

i have been running stage 1 for a few weeks. i installed a catless DP last weekend, and decided to try the stage 2 out today since i saw the post above. The car runs and pulls great .it's nice to have a fast car without all the noise from an aftermarket CBE.

Thast is fine. Stage 2 is just a DP and tune. As long as the Cobb DP removes the stock MP cat then you are fine. You'll now have just 1 high flow cat in your exhaust.

The catback will add minimal horsepower, and basically none on a dyno. At least nothing to make the $200-800 price tag worth it.

I just went to Stage 1 on Friday and I love it. On the basis of the more recent posts, I think I'll stick with the stock exhaust and just add the Cobb DP when I'm ready for Stage 2.

YoungGunna, could you tell much of a difference with Stage 2? (with the '09's, most of the gains seem to be with Stage 1)

The power is in Stage 2. Stage 1 is great, but Stage 2 is even better.

Stock vs Stage 1 vs Stage 2

I could tell a difference from using the stage1 and then going to the stage 2, the car did pull harder, the only problem it was with my butt dyno.

If you look strictly at the horsepower and torque increases between stage 1 and 2, the increases aren't as impressive as stage 1 gains from stock, but you have to realize you spool faster and the power and torque come earlier, which makes a big difference in actuality. I went stage 1 with aem and 93 octane and I decided to go with a downpipe and stage 2 map soon to retain my stock exhaust. (2011 sedan exhaust is loud anyways, it's so deep and rumbly, and it's gotten loud lately [just broke 3500 miles])

Bump an old thread,

I'm thinking of running a shorty Stromung DP and a gutted up pipe on my 02 WRX wagon. And just keep the stock exhaust with the mid pipe cat on. Would I have any problems?

Glad I found this tread. I am ordering a Cobb AP and DP for my wife's 09 FXT. She did not want it loud at all so I am going to keep the Stock CBE, assuming the Cobb DP plays nice with (or should i say hooks up to) the stock cbe. gotta do somthing to fight that damned 4eat tranny in her FXT lmao.

Likewise, glad I found this thread too. I have a 2012 STi sedan + SF intake, running Cobb AP Stage1 ACN v332 beta (run V-power all the time). Just purchased the Cobb DP, couldn't get here quicker...

...not too sure about the differences of the models, will I be OK to run the DP on stage2 ACN with a standard CBE folks?

Apologies for potentially breaking the forum rules, n00b here.

I am looking to do a 20g turbo injectors Ewg and tmic. Could I get away with the stock exhaust. Or you think it will restrict a lot of power. I have a n1 right now and it's really annoying to me.

the j-pipe is the only really restrictive part, so you'd gain almost nothing from going full TBE. (well, aside from sound, which a lot of people want)
