Default Who is using non turbo tranny with turbo engine swap?

I am just curious to know how many people are still using their non turbo transmission with a swapped turbo engine. How long have u been using this setup? Estimated horsepower and torque? What clutch and pressure plate has worked best for u?

I myself still have the rs drivetrain with a wrx engine. Stage 2 tune and an estimated 250hp? and probably torque is around that range also. I am only 3500 miles into the engine and the clutch is already starting to slip in higher gears!!!

Did you change the clutch to a high clamping version when you did the swap?

NA trannies are no different than turbo trannies in strength when we're talking about 5MT cars. There are stronger years as they've improved the design of the gearboxes throughout their lifespan, but it's never been a turbo thing with NA gearboxes getting weaker parts.

Well I used a ebay special(lol, I know) stage 2 clutch and pp which was supposed to be good up to 280hp and 270ftlbs. Obviously it only held up only enough for me to change my oil once. No launching and i am not to hard on the car. I guess thats what I get for the money though. Im thinking about act street pp and clutch disc but im almost scared it might tear something up over time...? I try to let the synchros do the shifting and not force anything to hard......

I have a 2001 2.5RS coupe with an EJ205 running an RS transmission. The car has about 133k on it, while the trans was actually a replacement (stock trans had a third gear grind when I bought the car) and now has about 155k on it. The EJ205 is stock aside from Prodrive uppipe/catted downpipe/third cat delete pipe/axleback.

I am running a stock '06 WRX clutch and pressure plate with an Exedy lightweight flywheel. Because both the RS and 06/07 transmissions are push-type 5-speeds, I think this is the only OEM Subaru clutch that will fit the N/A car and is designed to hold turbo power. However, I made a mistake when I installed the clutch in using the RS clutch release fork, and now my clutch won't disengage smoothly under hard acceleration. A local Subaru trans expert had mentioned I might have some engagement/disengagement issues with this setup, and this might be what he meant.

As for the strength of the trans, it seems to be okay so far, although I don't drive terribly hard. I plan to get it tuned soon and then we'll see what an extra 40hp will do to it. Either way it will need replacement before too long because it's getting a little crunchy with so many miles on the synchronizing hardware, so I plan to drop a JDM turbo 5-speed in it at that point.

Yeah I read alot about people breaking the rs trans quickly or either having them for a while with a good bit of power. I even talked to a guy who is still using his rs trans with a 2.5liter swap.......

I have the mind set that it is 110% how you drive and your skill set. Sure your stock RS tranny will be more likely to fail over a STI 6 speed or Turbo tranny. BUT that doesn't mean it has to... People that truely know how to drive the right set up shouldn't have a problem. Just don't act like you have a dogbox and you'll be fine.

05 RS five speed
oem style exedy "stage 1" clutch and exedy lw flywheel
97 jdm ej20k, about 300hp
Running since late April 09, transmission had 18k miles when I got it

I do have weird noises from my drivetrain when coasting in gear though. People say its from the lw flywheel. It could also be the clutch disc damper springs...who knows.
