Default what size oil filter wrench?

Need some help. i was using a 67mm 3/8" drive oil socket wrench on the filters on my forester xt. went to change the new 08 wrx oil today and 67mm is a touch to small. looks like the filter is a little bigger then the puralator ones i was using. can anyone confirm if the size is 68mm or even 69mm? thanks. i need to order one. i may let the dealer do the first oil change anyway. if i remember from my XT, the factory puts that filter on super tight and it is very tough to get off the first oil filter.
thanks,
steve

not enough room to use it. the socket style would work much better.

When i had trouble and limited tools, I used a scredriver lol.

I dont know this 100% but subaru might have it for your car.

For your next oil filter, get one of those FRAM Tough Grips. Love those filters! The end is textured. No need for tools. So easy to put on and take off even with oily hands.

If you use synthetic oil you will always be able to twist the filter off by hand.

^Unless someone overtightened it the last time it was replaced. If you have a replacement filter that's the same size, can't you just take it to a parts store to see what size it is?

parts store. i did bring a new filter to several stores and no one has the right size. since 67mm is just a touch small, i ordered a 68mm on the internet yesterday. $4.98. what's with subaru forcing you to take the whole bottom cover off to get to the filter. my forester had a small cover you could open to reach the filter. anything to make our lives more difficult.

Although it's a pain, I use the same oil filter pliers shown above on my 07'.
I'm shaking my head on the Fram filter endorsement and the synthetic comment.

What's wrong with FRAM filters? Just a question. Let me know, for my sake, so I won't use them anymore.

yeah, i have read for years how bad fram filters test for protection and filtering. i have pliers like the ones showing above but since the filter is so tight from factory installation am am not going to use them. I'll end up punturing the filter trying to get it off. the dealer has a free oil changes for life program. they can do the first change and i'll do them after that.

Thanks for the heads up. I will discontinue use of FRAM filters on my Nissan truck and for future oil changes on my WRX. I will be doing my first oil change on the WRX in another 2k miles. I will go with a different brand such as Purolator.

EDIT: nah...

anyone know the actual size for the 02 WRX? I just hate how little room there is to get any filter off, I guess I'll use the pliers for now since my wrenches are in another state.

I'm always able to get mine off by hand. (if it's being stubborn, a dishwashing glove on your hand can give you some extra grip)

i have no idea where my filter wrench even is, it's been so long since i've used it, but i do have the pliers type. (as seen in post 5)

Since doing my own oil changes after the first dealer change (both cars bought new) I have only ever hand tightened and removed. No leaks... you don't need to gorilla the filter on, and it should be relatively easy to get off.
