Learn how to drive it properly. The UK and Japan owners don't have nearly as many tranny problems as US drivers do. That's because they have been driving awd turbo cars for a lot longer. I'm not saying the TY tranny is bullet-proof but it's not as bad as most people play it out to be. Do a search in the tranny forum for better answers.

JDM STi 6 speed is a nice option if you are looking for something beefier. Thanks.

any STi gearset is an upgrade but on roughly 200whp and a EJ18 tranny with 137k miles on, mine is holding just fine....the driver makes the difference much more so than the equipment.

I just bought a JDM 2.0 Tranny from a Legacy/Liberty for $650. The gears about the same as my stock 1.8 tranny. Though forth and fifth gear seam to be higher geared. Second gear REALLY pulls. I havent had any probs yet, other than a damaged 5 gear syncro. How I have not a clue. I have taken the car to 140 in the snow in 5th gear at 5600rpm. Rev limited to 6000. I couldn't get past 140 cause of the trip button. I have a 2WD by the way.

So maybe I should have refined my original post.
I didnt want to argue about good or bad. I wanted to know if anyone has done any Hybrid Tranny swaps. All the gear sets I've come across just arent what Im looking for. If I wanted a drag car I would buy a Fiero and throw in a big block. I just happen to drive 95-100 routinely. And no, Im not reckless or stupid. CatchMyDrift, Whats the rpm at 95? What's the engine pushing? 140 in the snow sounds crazy. Got any film of that? |

Well its not 140 driving around, its 140 standing still.... I drove over a bit of ice and my car started to burn out. I was able to shift threw all the gears and almost max out 5th. Im sure I could do it again. The prob is finding a good patch of snow or ice again. At 95 im doing around 5100 rpm in 4th. This tranny has ALOT of running room. All I need now the some extra HP. Maybe I should add more stickers! ( Tons more HP )

Ah, Now that makes allot more sense.
What is the redline on your setup? Let me know what 95 is in 5th. Though off top my head it seems not much different than my stock '00 RS 5 speed. I beleive Im running around 4 - 4100 grand at 90-95. Want to drop that downto 32-3400 at most. |

What do you mean Hybrid Tranny swaps? the only gear options you have are wrx, rs or the sti ra set.... others are dog boxes.
The 6 speed or an auto if you have money... |

Any,
Just wondering if it has ever been done. And if your looking at a minimum of 4-5 K on a stock 6 speed, then whats another 2-3 ? I havent looked into it yet, just wanted to see if anyone had already did such. So far I've been looking into getting the 6 speed custom gear'd. Not in a rush so will spend some time researching. |
