found a vid of my machinist working on a couple Subaru blocks
I just picked up my block today after a 3 wk wait. I had John Edwards talk to CP Piston's tech support to get the right ra numbers for their rings. Cosworth's tech support also recommended an ra of between 20 or lower for the deck surface to have their head gasket seal correctly. So this was the goal when resurfacing the top of the block deck. John also checked the mains for straightness. The crank was sent out to have a .001" clearance on the rod journals. He also balanced the whole rotational assembly to 1/2 gram.
Here's some vids of machinist I used, John Edwards from Costa Mesa R & D in Orange County, Southern California: Honing an STI block YouTube - Subaru STi Block Honing Here's another vid resurfacing a Subaru SVX block with sleeves: YouTube - Subaru SVX Sleeved Block Resurfacing Here's another of his custom 6 qt Subaru oil pan: YouTube - Subaru Aluminum Oil Pan, etc...

Cool vids. Have you ask him about torque plates?

He may well have bored the block using torque plates. Perhaps he just did the final honing without.
A torque plate is used to simulate the loads applied to the block by a torqued head during machining. When you torque a head down it slightly distorts the bore. If you bore the block perfectly round without a torque plate in place, it will go slightly out of round when you install your heads, negatively affecting ring seal. If you bore with a torque plate in place the bore being distorted will be taken into account. It should actually read slightly out of round without a torqued head/plate, but should be perfectly round when the head is actually installed. |

intresting..Thanks MartinSTi05 for the explanation
but aren't head bolts supposed to be torqued in a certain order to ensure proper distribution of force on the mating surfaces of the head and block to prevent said distortions, assuming the deck faces are true and level? if the torque plate does simulate the forces, then i guess it would minimize the distortion caused by the assembler that wouldnt be as methodical. |

No, you torque the head studs in a particular order to ensure an even clamp across the entire head and one of sufficient force. If the block distorts it distorts(and it will). Torque plates should be torqued exactly as heads would be on a block. |

The torque plate helps simulate the forces exerted on the block, specifically the threaded holes for the head studs/bolts. These forces have nothing to do with how the head will lay on the block. |

yep i have used COStamesa R&D on about 4 of my builds and i like his work alot, the shop is so busy that turnaround time is a bit slow. but john knows his stuff, over 10 years teaching engine rebuild and he worked for the company that builds the machining tools in his shop.
great guy check him out if your in the socal area. |

Good info, I'll have to check my machinist now for my upcoming build...
