Default Please critique this computer...

Hey everyone,

I know this has been done a lot here, but a lot of you folks are much better at this stuff than I, so I figured I'd offer this up for comments.

I'm building my first computer. I already have a DVD +-RW drive and a 200G hard-drive that will be in this box as well.

Here it is...

http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishR.asp?ID=964061

Please let me know if I've forgotten anything or if you have any changes that would be worthwhile.

Thanks!

you might want a floppy drive, as well as better speakers
other than that I have nothing to suggest but "enjoy!"

mac people dont count

Unless you plan on buying a USB key that you swear not to lose, floppies are handy because theyre cheap and convenient

no reason to buy an OS, period.

Looks ok, and I'm guessing you have the money to spend. Though personally, you could probably have a system that was nearly equal in terms of speed for much cheaper if you went with an Athlon 64. Ram would also be about half the price for a gig if you got 2x512 sticks.

But other then that, if you want to spend the money for the P4, the system looks pretty good.

Frys had a Prescott 3.2 Ghz chip for $199 including a motherboard last weekend. They had a superior Athlon 64 3200+ with a motherboard for $269.
It's not like you don't live near Frys. That's way too expensive at Newegg.

You can find that video card for nearly $100 less. Just search the fatwallet forums.

$100 less, not less then $100. Also, chances are you're thinking of the non GT 6800. Personally, I think buying the latest and greatest video card is ALWAYS A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.

If you got a 9800 Pro for $190, (or a non GT 6800) you'd be able to play through Doom on High Quality and still get a great framerate. Then you could have $200 to put towards the next best thing thats cheaper down the line.

I've been shafted way too many times on Pricewatch. It absolutely isn't worth it anymore since Newegg generally has everything for a few bucks more at the max.

Since when does nearly $100 less mean less than $100? Grap on my english

Dell offers 10-15% off and $30-$35 off periodically on their video cards. That will take it below $400.

Below $400 isn't $100 cheaper though...lowest I've seen for a GT is $375. Plus thats the Doom 3 bundle which is another $50 on top. Doesn't seem like a bad deal.

Nice machine, Gary I've got one of those 36gb raptors myself and it just screams. I'm booting into a desktop (from the bios screen) within 11 seconds. You machine is a bit faster than mine though so I'd expect better. hehehe

Like some of the folks have said, you can prob get some of those pieces cheaper if you were to buy them seperately from each other at different places. If you're like me though, the instant gratification of getting everything at once is more than worth the extra 50 or 100 bucks or whatever you'd save.

You're going to be a very happy man. Nothing like never reading the box for minimum requirements on games.

GarySheehan, why spend the money on the ricey case? You can just get a black one for something like $35 instead.

Don't bother getting XP Pro, there's no real advantage it has over Home. If you can, just get an OEM disc.

USB floppies are retarded (no offense intended to those who are retarded). No one needs a floppy drive when their computer is working, but when you can't boot into your OS do you think a USB floppy drive is going to be any good? Buy an internal IDE floppy drive, they're cheaper and better...
