needing advise. 6-spd -> RS
So I'm in the middle of installing a STi 6 speed into my RS. The motor is in the car, so we're putting it in from underneath. At this point though it doesn't want to fit.
We can't get it high enough to be able to attach it to the lower dowels coming from the motor. Right now if we raise it up with the input shaft just barely tounching, but not clearing the clutch bearing, it hits the top of the tunnel. Anybody have any pointers? The next thing we're going try is unbolt the engine crossmember and lower it slightly, trying to make the angle work better. Bear in mind this is a full shop with transmission jacks and such. Not a driveway-car-on-jackstands install. I've searched on here IWSTI and RS25 and haven't come up with anything.

Try jacking the front of the motor up to tilt the engine. This will lower the rear of the engine and allow you to attach the trans. When the trans is removed the engine tilts forward unless it is supported by a jack.
A 6 speed will fit in a GC chassis. jake |

Yeah, what he said. I would probably unbolt the pitch stop, too, to make it a bit easier to tilt the engine.

If he has the trans out then the pitch stopper is obviously out since it bolts the the trans case.

What these guys said
As everyone before me said,
But I'll re-iterate, tilt the motor down. It will rotate a LOT more than you think. I was having a ton of trouble getting the 6-speed into my WRX, had a guy that had done it come over. All he did differently was tilt the motor down, after that easy as just pushing them together and bolting it up. If you need slightly more details... Rotate the engine down about as far as you feel comfortable. You can use a jack to do this (don't put the jack on the oil pan...read all the stories), or grab a hand winch and attach up at the top of the motor and then put the bolt for the pitch-stop back in and rotate the engine down with that (just don't pull too hard on the firewall) Bring the tranny in as far as you can and start some bolts if you can. Then keep working it closer and steadily raising the engine and tranny back up. This means that if you let off some tension from the winch (or the jack) make sure you raise the tranny jack at the same time or the bolts will bend or strip out the engine. Again it also depends on how close they are together and how many bolts you have in. Hopefully that'll get you done...definitely was not fun moving that thing around under there... Gl |

Thanks for the info guys. I was able to finish the swap the other day. I think we only had to install and remove it 3-4 times for various issues. I will say I don't know how people manage to do it without a tranny jack.

Installation is the opposite of removal...
